Presentation by Ian Phillips and Annie Fergusson. The Australian Flexible Learning Framework’s annual E-learning Benchmarking surveys, which measure the use, impact and uptake of e-learning within vocational education and training (VET) have been completed. The results are now available via the Flexible Learning Framework website. The surveys show that 29% of all VET activity now involves e-learning. This is up from 17% in 2006 and 6-8% in 2005. The growth in e-learning is primarily being driven by RTOs that were already using e-learning and extending it to more of their students. Nearly half of all registered training organisations still say they do no e-learning. Tune in to find out about the latest trends in the uptake and use of e-learning with data from the e-learning surveys of RTOs, VET students, employers and VET teachers and trainers. See the extent to which different training organisations are using e-learning, and catch up on what individual RTOs are doing to benchmark their use of e-learning.

The revised state of play for micro-credentials in Australasia
In 2019 ACODE ran a survey to understand where Australasian HE Institutions were up-to in relation to establishing micro-credentials. At that point less than a quarter had even a policy in place. Since then the effort towards micro- credentialing has increased. The 2020 ACODE survey reveals that, if not already well-underway, institutions are developing or seriously considering micro- credentialing strategies. A number of interesting trends emerged that this presentation will explore, such as, several universities are working on ways to
integrate existing short course systems into award course systems. Others are planning to offer micro-credentials to businesses and government in a commercial capacity. It was noted that professional practice degrees are a new space being explored to tap into industry partnerships. There is also consideration of co-delivery with VET providers. In all this, many indicated that they needed to rethink their operating structures to best service micro-credentials in their various permutations.

the demand for higher quality. Previously, Six Sigma has
successfully been applied in the product and service
improvement in the field of business, but still, this concept has
not yet been adopted in the higher education. This study
outlined the models that can be adopted by improving the
quality of higher learning by applying this concept. Applying
the six sigma principles, for instance, the continuous
improvement, reduction in waste, and process improvement
apply closely to the accreditation agencies and the higher
education institutions missions. The study used the
questionnaire instrument to collect the data randomly from a
sample of (357) respondents representing the general staff of
higher education institutes at Kingdom of Bahrain. It has been
established that majority of the institutions (56.7 per cent) use
six sigma model in improving quality. They invest in
communicating the quality objectives to the employees. This is
important as communicating quality objectives and the
modalities of attaining them are important to the institution.
Study recommended ensuring that there is elaboration and
well-communicated quality policy, and it is essential to be
known by all stakeholders.

In 2019 ACODE ran a survey to understand where Australasian HE Institutions were up-to in relation to establishing micro-credentials. At that point less than a quarter had even a policy in place. Since then the effort towards micro- credentialing has increased. The 2020 ACODE survey reveals that, if not already well-underway, institutions are developing or seriously considering micro- credentialing strategies. A number of interesting trends emerged that this presentation will explore, such as, several universities are working on ways to
integrate existing short course systems into award course systems. Others are planning to offer micro-credentials to businesses and government in a commercial capacity. It was noted that professional practice degrees are a new space being explored to tap into industry partnerships. There is also consideration of co-delivery with VET providers. In all this, many indicated that they needed to rethink their operating structures to best service micro-credentials in their various permutations.

the demand for higher quality. Previously, Six Sigma has
successfully been applied in the product and service
improvement in the field of business, but still, this concept has
not yet been adopted in the higher education. This study
outlined the models that can be adopted by improving the
quality of higher learning by applying this concept. Applying
the six sigma principles, for instance, the continuous
improvement, reduction in waste, and process improvement
apply closely to the accreditation agencies and the higher
education institutions missions. The study used the
questionnaire instrument to collect the data randomly from a
sample of (357) respondents representing the general staff of
higher education institutes at Kingdom of Bahrain. It has been
established that majority of the institutions (56.7 per cent) use
six sigma model in improving quality. They invest in
communicating the quality objectives to the employees. This is
important as communicating quality objectives and the
modalities of attaining them are important to the institution.
Study recommended ensuring that there is elaboration and
well-communicated quality policy, and it is essential to be
known by all stakeholders.

Abstract: ChatGPT, and more broadly AI Transformers, has put the cat among the pigeons over recent months. Institutions are looking at different ways to provide the best possible advice to our staff and students. There is now consistent agreement, there can potentially be very positive outcomes for both students and staff, but we first need to understand this as a community. The theme of the ACODE 88 Meeting 2 March 2023 was ‘Embracing AI for student and staff productivity’. As this workshop we had some 200 participants; Director of TEL, Managers and Educational Designers, all bringing perspectives from their own institutions, to benchmark and understand were we stand on this complex, but exciting issue. As an output from this workshop, ACODE have developed a White paper, to help provide the sector with a way forward, one developed together.

The University has embarked on a Transformation Accelerator journey to design a future-fit Education for a Digital World strategy. The accelerator process involves five intensive co-design sessions that bring together more than 30 design participants from across the University, including Academic and Professional staff and Students. Participants have been challenged to be bold to formulate a distinctive and future-fit learning experience for future University of Adelaide learners, staff and stakeholders.
Three design sessions have now taken place, which have focussed on the future of education and the perspective of future learners. Inputs have included the CSIRO megatrends that might alter the landscape of higher education, drawing on a variety of experts and hearing from current and future students and prospective industry employers. Future learner profiles also provided an understanding of how our future learners will consume education.
A series of guest speaker sessions have been arranged for participants and wider University colleagues, covering a diverse range of relevant topics.

Meeting the challenges of contemporary online learning head-on

- 4. michael_sankey • 20% increase in institutions responding they have a micro-credentialing policy compared to 2019.
- 5. • 32% of respondents (11) have an approved matrix to determine the level of a credential or badge linked to the levels of learning associated with the AQF, NZQF or similar. - 6. • A credentialing engine? 1/3 of institutions (11) said yes, this is a 13% increase from 2019. - 7. michael_sankey • The adoption of micro-credentialing has progressed significantly. 88% are in various states of adoption. 3 universities have well-established adoption policies while the rest are able to articulate work being done to progress the efforts
- 8. michael_sankey • A clear increase in the number who are already, or plan to micro-credential undergraduate units. This is likely due to the undergraduate certificates and short courses the government has asked uni’s to offer to mitigate unemployment due to COVID-19 induced job losses
- 9. michael_sankey • Generally micro-credentialing is considered for credit there are institutions which are still developing their path to credentialing. There is work in the pipeline for credentials including recognition for volunteer work, academic skills and integrity, staff training, technology competency and recognising competency and completion of external participants.
- 10. michael_sankey • PD courses include learning and teaching related training, technology, business, compliance and professional skills. 23 (68%) of respondents suggested their existing professional development courses could be micro-credentialled, these include potential teaching and professional skills courses.
- 11. Conclusion michael_sankey • Effort towards micro-credentialing has increased across most criteria since 2019. • If not already well-underway, institutions are developing or seriously considering micro-credentialing strategies. • Several uni’s are working on ways to integrate existing short course systems with course systems focused on under-graduate students. • micro-credentials to businesses and government in a commercial capacity. • Professional practice degrees are a new space taping into industry partnerships. • co-delivery with providers in VET. • HE also need to rethink their operating structures to best service the offering of micro- credentials in its various permutations. • ACODE will continue to monitor this important space over the next few years.
