6. Early states
Around 3000 years ago, we found some changes had taken place in the ways in which rajas were chosen.
Some men were then recognised as rajas by performing very big sacrifices.
Ashvamedha or horse sacrifice was one such ritual in which a horse was let loose to wander freely and it was guarded by the raja’s men.
If the horse wandered into the kingdoms of other rajas and they stopped it, they had to fight.
If they allowed the horse to pass, it meant that they accepted that the raja who wanted to perform the sacrifice was stronger than them. These rajas were then invited to the sacrifice.
The raja who organized the sacrifice was recognised as being very powerful and all those who came brought gifts for him.
The rajas who performed big sacrifices were then recognised as being rajas of janapadas rather than janas.
The word janapada means the land where the jana set its foot and settled down.
Archaeologists have excavated a number of settlements in these janapadas such as Purana Qila in Delhi, Hastinapura near Meerut, and Atranjikhera near Etah.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630 at Shivneri Fort to Shahaji Raje Bhosale and Rajmata Jijabai. He united the Maratha clans and carved out a kingdom in western India, defeating Mughal and other invaders. Shivaji established self-rule and just administration for the Maratha people. He is celebrated as a heroic figure in Maharashtra for protecting the region and Hindu faith. His birthday is a public holiday in Maharashtra in recognition of his contributions.

Another name for Surya in Sanskrit is Martand. Lalitaditya Muktapida, the third king of the Karkota Dynasty, constructed it. It was destroyed under the Muslim monarch Sikandar Shah Miri’s instructions, and is now in ruins.

A brief resume of the history of the Kakatiya dynasty will serve to explain the real significance of the architecture and sculpture of these temples.
The Kakatiyas have a place of honor among the ruling families of medieval Dekkan “by virtue of their numerous conquests, their vast empire, their liberal patronage of arts and letters, and the great fervor with which they defended Hindu culture and Hindu institutions against the repeated onslaughts of Islam.”
The origin of the dynastic name Kakatiyas is quite obscure. According to some sources it is derived from a goddess by name, Kakati, (when the rulers worshipped), and according to others, from a town of that name. The earliest inscription of the Kakatiyas, so far discovered, is dated in Saka 1001 equal to A.D. 1079, although an inscription of the Western Calukyas of Vengi refers to a certain Kakartya Gunda, obviously one of their feudatories in the 10th Century, who seems to have been an early ancestor of this family. Starting as feudatories of the Eastern Calukyas of Vengi they seem to have passed into a similar position under another dynasty, namely the Western Calukyas of Kalyani, whom they served loyally until circumstances favored their rise in the last quarter of the 11th Century.

Grihaditya, also called as Guhil, one born in a cave, and he grew up in Idar( now in the Sabarkantha district of Gujarat. He lent his name to the clan Guhilot which in due course of time, became better known as Gehlot. Initially ruled from Idar, later a new capital was established at Nagada
- 10. Bappa Rawal was the actual founder of Mewar Kingdom. Real name Kalbhoj, established a new dynasty called the Rawals. Grew up in the hills of Nagada as a shepherd. Father belonged to the Gehlot clan, Mother was of the Paramara clan. Gehlots were Suryavanshi Rajputs, while Paramaras were one of the 4 Agnikula Kshatriyas.
- 11. Bappa Rawal’s fame due to Battle of Rajasthan during the 8th Centuy AD. Uniting the smaller states of Ajmer, Jaisalmer, created a powerful alliance against Mohammed Bin Qasim. Qasim had overran Sindh, was forced to retreat, pursued through Saurashtra, right up to Indus. Marched right up to Ghazni and defeated it’s ruler. Expand his territory right up to Ispahan in current day Iran, and covered vast swathes of Afghanistan.
- 12. Bhatribhat I, who formed a loose confederation of sorts with other Rajput rulers. Last ruler Allat Singh was forced to move to Ahar, in the mid 10th century, abandoning Chittorgarh. Ahar was the capital of the Gehlot rulers from 971 AD to 1172 AD Constant Muslim invasions, meant the last ruler at Ahar, Kshem Singh had to move his capital to Dungarpur in Rajasthan.
- 13. Dungarpur was established by Mahup, the elder son of the 12th century Mewar ruler Karan Singh. Mahup was disinherited by his father, and took refuge with his mother, who belonged to the Bagar clan of Chauhan. Took the title of Maharawal, and fought many a battle with the Bhil tribals there, to establish his position. Dungarpur is believed to have been named after a Bhil chieftain, assassinated by Mahup’s successor Rawal Bir Singh in the 14th century
