This document outlines the nine step methodology for designing a free faceted classification scheme for a given subject. The methodology includes: 1) choosing a model and sub-model, 2) determining the nature of the faceted model, 3) identifying facets, specifiers, and relationships, 4) acquiring background knowledge, 5) choosing a basic subject, 6) collecting elements, 7) preparing standard entries and term records, 8) determining the core entity and sorting into facets and specifiers, and 9) allocating notation, preparing an index, and conducting a pilot project. The methodology breaks down the complex process of designing a classification scheme into discrete steps to systematically develop the scheme.
