Analyzing Art Work Made Easy! Designed For Young Art StudentsSusan Alleyne Forde
Don't be afraid to write about art pieces again! Simple tips for students, using the Principles & Elements of Art, to describe and analyze works of art!
I have tried to explain the elementary fundamentals of drawing like shapes, forms, shading, perspective drawing etc.
This training material was prepared for my team consisting primarily of Graphic Designers with the objective that they'd start approaching their work like artists.
There are plenty of exercises at the end of each section as well... hope you enjoy it!
All elements of art are important for an artist. You don’t have to use all elements, however, at least one or two elements are used in a certain piece of art.
Art, and especially visual arts, is the topic that requires both background knowledge and imagination. Most teachers are afraid of it, the same as most students are bored with it. However, with the concept maps and cause-and-effect sentences it may become a source of fun in the English classroom. So, to make teaching of art more effective, I suggest a couple of ideas, which will also be the key points for the workshop:
1) Basic history of art - it gives us not just facts but useful vocabulary for describing works of art.
2) Elements of design and what they mean.
3) How to describe a picture or a photograph.

The Beauty in Details_ A Closer Look at the Art of Drawing.pdfMy Art Pix
In this article, we will delve deeper into the art of art and drawing exploring its techniques, significance, and the profound impact it has on our perception of the world.
I've adapted this from an original presentation that wasn't mine; adding a few more slides. Serves as an excellent introduction to Art History and its methodology.

Elements of Art: Form Line Shape Color Texture Space Value
Form is an element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume. Cubes, spheres, and cylinders are examples of various forms.
Line is an element of art which refers to the continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point. It may be two dimensional, like a pencil mark on a paper or it may be three dimensional (wire) or implied (the edge of a shape or form) often it is a outline, contour or silhouette.
Shape is an enclosed space defined by other elements of art. Shapes may take on the appearance of two-d or three- objects.
Color Is an element of art with three properties:
1) Hue, the name of the color, e.g. red, yellow, etc
2) Intensity or the purity and strength of the color such as brightness or dullness
3) Value, or the lightness or darkness of the color
Texture refers to the surface quality or "feel" of an object, such as roughness, smoothness, or softness. Actual texture can be felt while simulated textures are implied by the way the artist renders areas of the picture.
Space refers to the distance or area between, around, above or within things. It can be a description for both 2 and 3 dimensional portrayals.
Value describes the lightness or darkness of a color. Value is needed to express Volume.
Principles of Art: Emphasis Balance Harmony Variety Movement Rhythm Proportion Unity
Emphasis in a composition refers to developing points of interest to pull the viewer's eye to important parts of the body of the work.
Balance is a sense of stability in the body of work. Balance can be created by repeating same shapes and by creating a feeling of equal weight.
Harmony is achieved in a body of work by using similar elements throughout the work, harmony gives an uncomplicated look to your work.
Variety refers to the differences in the work; you can achieve variety by using difference shapes, textures, colors and values in your work.
Movement adds excitement to the work by showing action and directing the viewers eye throughout the picture plane.
Rhythm is a type of movement in drawing and painting. It is seen in repeating of shapes and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm.
Proportion or scale refers to the relationships of the size of objects in a body of work. Proportion gives a sense of size seen as a relationship of objects, such as smallness or largeness.
Unity is seen in a painting or other work when all the parts equal a whole. Your work should not appear disjointed or confusing.

2. Drawing is one of the oldest forms of
human expression within the visual arts.
It is generally concerned with the marking
of lines and areas of tone onto paper/other
material, where the accurate representation
of the visual world is expressed upon a
plane surface. Traditional drawings were
monochrome, or at least had little colour,
while modern colored-pencil drawings may
approach or cross a boundary between
drawing and painting
Definition of Drawing
3. In Western terminology, drawing is distinct
from painting, even though similar media
often are employed in both tasks. Dry
media, normally associated with drawing,
such as chalk, may be used in pastel
paintings. Drawing may be done with a
liquid medium, applied with brushes or
pens. Similar supports likewise can serve
both: painting generally involves the
application of liquid paint onto prepared
canvas or panels, but sometimes
an underdrawingun is drawn first on that
same support.
4. Drawing composition :
Composition is the placement or arrangement
of the visual elements, such as figures, trees, and so
on in a work of art, as distinct from the subject or the
style with which it is depicted. It can also be thought of
as the organization of the elements of art according to
the principles of art.

5. Drawing became significant as an art
form around the late 15th century, with
artists and master engravers such as
Albrecht Dürer and Martin Schongauer
(c. 1448-1491), the very first Northern
engraver known by name. Schongauer
came from Alsace, and was born into a
family of goldsmiths. Albrecht Dürer, a
master of the next generation, was also
the son of a goldsmith
Notable artists and draftsmen
6. The medium is the means by which ink, pigment
or color are delivered onto the drawing surface.
Most drawing media are either dry (e.g. graphite,
charcoal, pastels, Conté, silverpoint), or use a
fluid solvent or carrier (marker, pen and ink).
Watercolor pencils can be used dry like ordinary
pencils, then moistened with a wet brush to get
various painterly effects. Very rarely, artists have
drawn with (usually decoded) invisible ink
Materials
7. Prior to working on an image, the artist typically explores
how various media work. They may try different drawing
implements on practice sheets to determine value and texture,
and how to apply the implement to produce various effects.
The artist's choice of drawing strokes affects the appearance
of the image. Pen and ink drawings often use hatching
groups of parallel lines. form lighter tones and controlling
the density of the breaks achieves a gradation of tone.
Different textures can be achieved depending on the method
used to build tone.
Technique
8. Shading is the technique of varying the tonal
values on the paper to represent the shade of
the material as well as the placement of the
shadows. Careful attention to reflected light,
shadows and highlights can result in a very
realistic rendition of the image.
Tone
9. Measuring the dimensions of a subject
while blocking in the drawing is an
important step in producing a realistic
rendition of the subject. Tools such as a
compass can be used to measure the
angles of different sides. These angles
can be reproduced on the drawing surface
and then rechecked to make sure they are
accurate.
Form and proportion
10. Linear perspective is a method of
portraying objects on a flat surface so
that the dimensions shrink with distance.
Each set of parallel, straight edges of
any object, whether a building or a table,
follows lines that eventually converge at
a vanishing point.
Perspective
11. The composition of the image is an important
element in producing an interesting work of
artistic merit. The artist plans element
placement in the art to communicate ideas
and feelings with the viewer. The composition
can determine the focus of the art, and result
in a harmonious whole that is aesthetically
appealing and stimulating.
Artistry
12. A visually accurate drawing is described
as being "recognized as a particular
object at a particular time and in a
particular space, rendered with little
addition of visual detail that can not be
seen in the object represented or with
little deletion of visual detail”
Process
