a composition.
It helps show contrasts, harmony,
balance, repetition, dominance,
gradation and unity in paintings.

High contrast refers to a great
difference between colors or
elements, and low contrast refers to a
slight difference between colors or

to create a single idea, quality, or a
whole design.

In an art artwork is the placement of
all the elements of the composition
so that their visual weights seem
evenly distributed.

30. Formal Balance or Symmetrical Balance
Informal or Asymmetrical
Is a type of balance in which two sides of an
artwork are not exactly alike yet still
appears pleasantly even.
It is a type of balance in which the
contents on either side of a center line
are exactly the same. One side would
mirror the other.
Radial Balance
Occurs when all the elements in the
composition radiate outward from the center
or toward it.

Is the principle of art concerned with
making an element or object in a
work stand out.

Is a principle of art concerned with
combining different art element like
colors, lines, shapes and texture to
increase visual interest.
33. Movement
Is the principle of art used to create the look and feel of
action, and to guide the viewe’s eyes throughout a work
of art. Artists create movements through a careful
blending of elements such as line and shape.
34. Pattern
It is a design in which lines, shapes, forms or colors are
repeated.
Patterns can be regular or irregular.
35. Rhythm
Is the regular repetition of lines, shapes, colors and
other art elements in the same or similar ways to
suggest flowing movement.
The repetition of any art element over and over forms a
pattern.
36. Harmony
Is the principle of art concerned with combining related
art elements to create a pleasing appearance.
37. Proportion
Deals with the proper relation between two objects or
parts. The parts of a work should relate to the other
parts, as well as to the entire composition.
