A 26-person team in London created Mendeley to address two problems in scientific research: 1) The manual work of reading, retaining, and citing hundreds of papers; and 2) The lack of social and collaborative tools to share research. Mendeley automates document management on desktops and allows research papers to be shared and discussed online. After 15 months of public beta testing, over 27 million research papers and 500 million references have been uploaded to Mendeley by researchers from top institutions around the world. Mendeley provides real-time statistics on paper usage that are important metrics for scientific careers, jobs, funding, and prestige.
