Mel FellerLooks at Making Better Decisions
Mel Fellerunderstandsall toowellthatjustas people are different, soare theirstylesof decision
making. Each personisa resultof all of the decisionsmade intheirlifetodate.Recognizingthis, here
are some tipsto enhance yourdecision-makingbattingaverage.
Do not make decisionsthatare notyours to make.
Whenmakinga decisionyouare simplychoosingfromamongalternatives.Youare not makinga choice
betweenrightandwrong.
Avoidsnapdecisions.Move fastonthe reversible onesandslowlyonthe non-reversible.
Choosingthe rightalternative atthe wrongtime isnotany betterthanthe wrong alternative atthe right
time,somake the decisionwhileyoustill have time.
Do your decision-makingonpaper.Make notesandkeepyourideasvisible soyoucan considerall the
relevantinformationinmakingthisdecision.
Be sure to choose basedonwhat isright, not whoisright.
Write downthe pros and consof a line of action. It clarifiesyourthinkingandmakesfora better
decision.
Make decisionsasyougo along.Donot letthemaccumulate.A backlogof many little decisionscouldbe
harderto deal withthanone bigand complex decision.
Considerthose affectedbyyourdecision.Whenever feasible,gettheminvolvedtoincrease their
commitment.
Recognize thatyoucannot knowwith100% certaintythat yourdecisioniscorrectbecause the actionsto
implementitare to take place inthe future.Somake itand do notworry aboutit.
Use the OAR,O. A.R. approach indecision-making.LookatO, Objectivesyouare seekingtoattain,A,
the Alternativesyousense are available toyouandR, the riskof the alternative youare considering.
It has beensaidthata decisionshouldalwaysbe made atthe lowestpossible level andasclose tothe
scene of actionas possible. However, adecisionshouldalwaysbe made ata level insuringthatall
activitiesandobjectivesaffectedare fullyconsidered. The firstrule tellsushow fardowna decision
shouldbe made. The secondhowfar downitcan be made.
Rememberthatnotmakinga decisionisadecisionnottotake action.
To be effective amanagermusthave the luxuryof havingthe rightto be wrong.
Trust yourself tomake a decisionandthentobe able to fieldthe consequencesappropriately.
Do not waste yourtime makingdecisionsthatdonothave to be made.
Determine alternative coursesof actionbefore gatheringdata.
Before implementingwhatappearstobe the bestchoice, assessthe riskby asking"Whatcan I thinkof
that mightgo wrongwiththisalternative?”
Many decisionsyoumake are unimportant-about80% of them.Establishoperatinglimitsandletyour
secretaryor othersmake themforyou.
Considermakingthe decisionyourself inlieuof agroup, but recognize the potential forless
commitmentbythose affected.
As part of your decisionmakingprocess, alwaysconsiderhow the decisionistobe implemented.
As soonas youare aware that a decisionwill have tobe made ona specificsituation, review the factsat
handthenset itaside.Letthisincubate inyoursubconsciousminduntil itistime tofinallymake the
decision.
Once the decisionhasbeenmade, donotlookback. Be aware of how it iscurrentlyaffectingyouand
focuson yournextmove.Neverregretadecision.Itwasthe rightthingto do at the time. Now focuson
whatis rightat this time.
Mentallyrehearse implementationof yourchoice andreflectinyourimaginationwhatoutcomeswill
result.
Brainstormingalternative solutionswithyourstaff orotherswill gainfreshideasandcommitment.
Discontinue prolongeddeliberationaboutyourdecision.Make itandcarry it through.
Once you have made the decisionandhave startedwhatyouare goingto do,put the "whatif's"aside
and do itwithcommitment.
Try it now.Picka decisionyouhave beenpostponing,giveyourself threeminutes,andjustmake it.If
youare overwhelmedwithtoomanydecisions, take apiece of paperandwrite a listof the decisions.
Give yourself asetamountof time andthen, one byone, make the bestdecisionyoucanmake in the
moment.Makingthe decision — anydecision — will reduce youranxietyandletyoumove forward.The
bestantidote tofeelingoverwhelmedisforwardmomentum.
