About online survey
– An online survey is a questionnaire that the target audience can complete over the Internet.
Online surveys are usually created as Web forms with a database to store the answers and
statistical software to provide analytics. People are often encouraged to complete online surveys
by an incentive such as being entered to win a prize.
– The primary reason for the growth seen in the implementation of online survey is that they are
extremely low cost and conducting an online survey is convenient due to the sheer magnitude of
reach. Over the past decade, researchers have started preferring conducting surveys using an
online survey.
Disadvantages of online survey
– Respondents may not feel encouraged to provide accurate, honest
answersRespondents may not feel comfortable providing answers that present
themselves in a unfavorable manner.Respondents may not be fully aware of
their reasons for any given answer because of lack of memory on the subject, or
even boredom.Surveys with closed-ended questions may have a lower validity
rate than other question types.Data errors due to question non-responses may
exist. The number of respondents who choose to respond to a survey question
may be different from those who chose not to respond, thus creating
bias.Survey question answer options could lead to unclear data because certain
answer options may be interpreted differently by respondents. For example, the
answer option “somewhat agree” may represent different things to different
subjects, and have its own meaning to each individual respondent. ‘Yes’ or ‘no’
answer options can also be problematic. Respondents may answer “no” if the
option “only once” is not available.Customized surveys can run the risk of
containing certain types of errors
Advantages of online survey
– Relatively easy to administerCan be developed in less time (compared to other
data-collection methods)Cost-effective, but cost depends on survey modeCan be
administered remotely via online, mobile devices, mail, email, kiosk, or
telephone.Conducted remotely can reduce or prevent geographical
dependenceCapable of collecting data from a large number
of respondentsNumerous questions can be asked about a subject, giving
extensive flexibility in data analysisWith survey software, advanced statistical
techniques can be utilized to analyze survey data to determine validity, reliability,
and statistical significance, including the ability to analyze multiple variablesA
broad range of data can be collected (e.g., attitudes, opinions, beliefs, values,
behavior, factual).Standardized surveys are relatively free from several types of

Benefits
– Survey research is a unique way of gathering information from a large cohort.
Advantages of surveys include having a large population and therefore a
greater statistical power, the ability to gather large amounts of information and
having the availability of validated models.
– Despite a widespread perception that surveys are easy to conduct, in order to
yield meaningful results, a survey needs extensive planning, time and effort. In
this article, we aim to cover the main aspects of designing, implementing and
analysing a survey as well as focusing on techniques that would improve
response rates.
Directed question
– After settling on your research goal and beginning to design a questionnaire, the
main considerations are the method of data collection, the survey instrument and
the type of question you are going to ask. Methods of data collection include
personal interviews, telephone, postal or electronic
– Collected data are only useful if they convey information accurately and
consistently about the topic in which you are interested. This is where a validated
survey instrument comes in to the questionnaire design. Validated instruments
are those that have been extensively tested and are correctly calibrated to their
target.
Questionnaire
– Two more aspects come into questionnaire design: aesthetics and question order.
While this is not relevant to telephone or personal questionnaires, in self-
administered surveys the aesthetics of the questionnaire are crucial. Having
spent a large amount of time fine-tuning your questions, presenting them in such
a way as to maximise response rates is pivotal to obtaining good results. Visual
elements to think of include smooth, simple and symmetrical shapes, soft colours
and repetition of visual elements.
– Once you have attracted your subject’s attention and willingness with a well
designed and attractive survey, the order in which you put your questions is
critical.

  • 2. About online survey – An online survey is a questionnaire that the target audience can complete over the Internet. Online surveys are usually created as Web forms with a database to store the answers and statistical software to provide analytics. People are often encouraged to complete online surveys by an incentive such as being entered to win a prize. – The primary reason for the growth seen in the implementation of online survey is that they are extremely low cost and conducting an online survey is convenient due to the sheer magnitude of reach. Over the past decade, researchers have started preferring conducting surveys using an online survey.

Disadvantages of online survey – Respondents may not feel encouraged to provide accurate, honest answersRespondents may not feel comfortable providing answers that present themselves in a unfavorable manner.Respondents may not be fully aware of their reasons for any given answer because of lack of memory on the subject, or even boredom.Surveys with closed-ended questions may have a lower validity rate than other question types.Data errors due to question non-responses may exist. The number of respondents who choose to respond to a survey question may be different from those who chose not to respond, thus creating bias.Survey question answer options could lead to unclear data because certain answer options may be interpreted differently by respondents. For example, the answer option “somewhat agree” may represent different things to different subjects, and have its own meaning to each individual respondent. ‘Yes’ or ‘no’ answer options can also be problematic. Respondents may answer “no” if the option “only once” is not available.Customized surveys can run the risk of containing certain types of errors

  • 5. Benefits – Survey research is a unique way of gathering information from a large cohort. Advantages of surveys include having a large population and therefore a greater statistical power, the ability to gather large amounts of information and having the availability of validated models. – Despite a widespread perception that surveys are easy to conduct, in order to yield meaningful results, a survey needs extensive planning, time and effort. In this article, we aim to cover the main aspects of designing, implementing and analysing a survey as well as focusing on techniques that would improve response rates.

Directed question – After settling on your research goal and beginning to design a questionnaire, the main considerations are the method of data collection, the survey instrument and the type of question you are going to ask. Methods of data collection include personal interviews, telephone, postal or electronic – Collected data are only useful if they convey information accurately and consistently about the topic in which you are interested. This is where a validated survey instrument comes in to the questionnaire design. Validated instruments are those that have been extensively tested and are correctly calibrated to their target.
  • 7. Questionnaire – Two more aspects come into questionnaire design: aesthetics and question order. While this is not relevant to telephone or personal questionnaires, in self- administered surveys the aesthetics of the questionnaire are crucial. Having spent a large amount of time fine-tuning your questions, presenting them in such a way as to maximise response rates is pivotal to obtaining good results. Visual elements to think of include smooth, simple and symmetrical shapes, soft colours and repetition of visual elements. – Once you have attracted your subject’s attention and willingness with a well designed and attractive survey, the order in which you put your questions is critical.
