This is the completed Evaluation Task 2 for media.

1. Within this evaluation task, I will be considering the characters presented within our opening
sequence through what they are like and what this suggests about different social groups for
example ethnicity, age, gender and social class.
The main character portrayed within our opening sequence is a 30 year old white British male
that is from a middle class. This conforms to the typical lead characters within the majority of
thriller films. Within our opening sequence, our main character, Christian appears wearing a
messy version of the typical attire associated with detectives. This includes black trousers,
sturdy black boots, an untucked shirt and a black hooded coat. This has been crafted in order to
allow the audience to understand the personality of Christian Sears through the use of Mise en
scene elements such as costume, performance and positioning.
The use of costume creates a scruffy manipulation from the smart attire associated with the
professional appearance of a Detective. Through this representation, we have allowed the
audience to understand further the way in which Christian behaves and the lifestyle that he
lives.The fact that he is seen wearing dark colours only within his attire symbolizes the
mysterious and eerie theme that combined with the editing and his actions throughout the title
sequence, allows the audience to understand the morally corrupt and suspicious personality
associated with Christian's character. As well as this Christian is seen wearing his hood up in
part of the opening sequence this is used in order to hide his identity from the audience
therefore creating suspense, which will further intrigue them.
As well as this, the second main character, Sarah Aubridge, is a 26 year old white British female.
She is presented through the use of Mise en Scene in a smart manner. Throughout the opening
sequence she is wearing smart attire, consisting of a black button up coat, a black shirt and a
black blouse. She is also wearing dark colours only as it emphasizes the dark themes associated
with our film however contrasts with the attire Christian wears due to the fact that hers
presents a clear professional look whereas Christians is a scruffy and casual version of the smart
attire associated with detectives. As well as this, the use of diegetic sound when Sarah speaks
allows the audience to understand the social class she belongs to; being middle class.
According to New York Film Academy as of 2012, 30.8 % of speaking characters are women
however in our opening sequence we challenge these stereotypes due to the fact that the male
main character has no speak however the female does therefore going against the gender
stereotypes. Comparing the ways in which other women have been perceived in other films
such as Megan Fox in Transformers, there is a clear difference in the representation of genders.
Due to stereotypes with genders, as a young female Megan Fox was seen to be wearing
sexually revealing attire in the film Transformers and presented herself in a manner that is
common for women to be presented in modern films.

However we conform to these stereotypes by having a male as a main character although he is
not perceived to be the typical and stereotypical lead male actor witnessed in a variety of
modern films. Due to the reference of drugs and mental illness within our film, we differentiate
from the typical gender stereotypes when it comes to our lead male actor. We are aware of the
ways in which those with mental illnesses are presented in a cruel and cynical characters
however in our film we instead show the ways in which drugs can lead to mental illnesses and
how that can affect the events of your life.
We have a similar idea and concept to the main character in filth with a corrupt detective. He’s
attire is similar to the one we have chosen for Christian as he presents a casual and messy
appearance to the professional attire worn by someone in this specific occupation. As well as
this he posses the corrupt behavior that Christian does therefore create a negative feel towards
the character whilst also making the audience have a skeptical attitude towards them.
We wanted to portray the character Sarah in a less typical way in order to create a clear
contrast between Christian and Sarah in order to create a dramatic effect as well as inevitable
tension between the two antithesis characters. Therefore in order to create an innocent and
professional look only, we used simple clothing with no revealing elements similar to the one
portrayed in oranges and sunshine. The use of attire and body language creates a strong and
independent middle class women therefore removing the gender stereotypes seen constantly
within films.
