How did you use media new
media technologies in the
construction, research and
planning, and evaluation
stages
By Coral Prout
Hardware
In this Slide show I am going to list all
the hardware‟s that I have used to
create my music video.

Hardware refers to objects that you can
actually touch e.g. disks, disk drives,
display screens, keyboards, printers,
boards, and chips. In contrast, software
is untouchable. Software exists as
ideas, concepts, and symbols, but it
has no substance.
Computer hardware refers to the
physical parts of a computer and
related devices. Internal hardware
devices include motherboards, hard
drives, and RAM. External hardware
devices include monitors, keyboards,
mice, printers, and scanners.

The hardware that we used in order to
create our music video are:
- IMac Apple- 2 ghz Intel core duo
processor (keyboard and mouse)
- Video camera (tripod)
- Camera
- X serve- networked drive
- Scanner Epson v300
- IPhone 5
All of the hardware listed above will
be described and explained in a
separate slide explaining how I used it
and what the hardware is and looks
like.
IMac Apple- 2 ghz Intel core 2
duo processor
The iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 20-Inch Aluminum
(Mid-2009/Education Only) features a 2.0 GHz
Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor, with two
independent processor "cores" on a single
silicon chip, a 3 MB shared level 2 cache, a
1066 MHz system bus, 8 GB of RAM (1066
MHz DDR3 SDRAM), a 160 GB (7200 RPM)
hard drive, a vertically-mounted slot-loading
DVD±R DL "SuperDrive", NVIDIA GeForce
9400M graphics with 128 MB of memory shared
with the system, a built-in insight video camera,
and built-in stereo speakers underneath the 20"
glossy TFT Active Matrix LCD (1680x1050
native) display.

Connectivity includes four
USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire "800" port, built-in
AirPort Extreme, and Gigabit Ethernet, as well
as a Mini Display Port, which supports an
external display in "extended desktop" mode.

With this computer there is also a mouse and a
keyboard that is singly connected to the computer.

We used the IMac to create and design ideas for
our music video. We used this through; the
internet (social media, evaluations of work,
YouTube, wordpress), Photoshop final cut,
PowerPoint, Microsoft word.
Video Camera
The camera we used was a canon legria hf r406. This is a HD camera
that is secure Digital and can record at a medium quality. We used this to
record all the footage for our music video and used another camera for
our digipak photo‟s.
This camera also had a 4 GB, class 10 SD card and used a SD card
reader with a USB integral to download all footage recorded.

To make all camera movements smooth and persistent I also used a
“Amazon basics” tripod.

This camera was used for us to take pictures for our digipak. This was used in a professional format where we could manipulate the camera lighting and
decide weather we wanted a shadow on our artists face.
Xserve- network drive on user
accounts and backup.
The Xserve can be used for a variety of applications,
including file server, web server or even high-performance
computing applications using clustering – a dedicated
cluster Xserve, the Xserve Cluster Node, without a video
card and optical drives are also available.
Our Xserve is controlled by our IT services where all our
work is backed up with over 256 GB of PC2700 DDR
SDRAM (1.33 GHz) 512 GB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM (DP
1.33 GHz) of memory. This involves user accounts also
being backed up
Epson V300 scanner
This was used in order to show all our planning for our
music video. This includes our story board and set ups.
This helped with organization of our music video as well
as having a virtual and hard copy.
IPhone 5
This has been used for playing the song for the music
video in order for the main performer to get an idea for
timing, lyrics and rhythm.
With the 8mp of camera, we could film the audiences
feedback with a High Definition view and good quality
sound.
Software
In this half of the slide show I am going
to list and explain all the software‟s that
we have used to create our music
video. We are also going to create an
on-screen video of us talking step by
step all the software‟s that were
needed.

Software is anything that can be

stored electronically, in contrast to
storage devices which is hardware.

The software we used to
create our music video was:
- final cut pro x v.10.0.9 which
needed a file convertor
- Adobe Photoshop c55
- QuickTime player v7
- Microsoft word and
PowerPoint
- OSX v/0.6.8 Apples
operating system (Safari)
Online software/websites
- Wordpress
- YouTube
- Google
- Slideshare
- Prezi
- Facebook
Final cut pro X v.10.0.9
Apple.
Final cut pro was the main software that we used to create our music video. In final cut pro
you can insert music and footage and make them fit in with each other, adding special
effects that can make the video seem more exciting for the audience. In our music video
we used various effects and transitions including:
- Colour grading, firstly adding a colour balance to adjust the colour and make it more
balanced and natural (not too bright), on the same clip we added a vignette and
customized it to add a white frame to our mirror effect scene.
- Cross dissolve effect- combining scenes to overlap. This helped us keep the narrative
and performance link in together.
- We also used Colour Match where we matched all the clips we made to have the same
lighting and to look similar.
We completed these transitions and effects by keeping the „Inspector‟ open to see exactly
what effects we were applying to our footage.
When we filmed our footage it was saved as a AVI format instead of a MP4, we then had to
use a File converter (Free video converter V.2.30 Leand) to change the format of the
footage to make it correct to the format we needed for final cut. We did this by inserting the
original AVI format into the converter, selected MP4 and pressed „Convert‟, following this
we then re-downloaded it in its new format.
Adobe Photoshop C55
Photoshop was used to create our Digipak and our
advertisement for the Digipak. Photoshop was a great
way to add special effects onto photos taken to make it fit
in with the genre we were trying to portray.
Firstly we inserted the images we had taken, we then
shaped them to our specification, once we had the correct
images we then edited them (saturation turned to
low, filter- artistic water colour, as shown on the clip
below), finally we added the text that was needed (which
was previously downloaded from dafont.com)
Microsoft word and
PowerPoint
I used Microsoft word as part of my planning stage in my music video. I pasted
the lyrics onto the document then analyzed each verse to tie in with the story we
were trying to portray. This helped me greatly in the way that I could see exactly if
the lyrics went with the story.

I used Microsoft PowerPoint to complete my Software and Hardware question as I
could plan out what I was going to talk about in a way that would be clear for the
examiner.
OSX v/0.6.8 Apples operating
system
This was the main source for research and for us to answer any evaluation questions.
This, on a apple computer is known as safari. I used safari for;

-

Wordpress.com (blogging)

-

YouTube

-

Google (search engine)

-

Slideshare

-

-

Dafontcom
Wordpress.com
WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a
content-management system based on PHP and MySQL,
which runs on a web hosting service.
I used wordpress to analyze music videos, plan my music
video and my Digipak, and answer any questions about
my work.
YouTube
This was a great research engine that was used to create
my music video. I used YouTube to compare typical indie
songs, songs that talk about heartbreak and love, and the
music videos that our artist typically uses (looking at
forms and conventions, and how artists portray stories).
Google- Search engine
Google was used for everything; gaining ideas for the music video,
digipak and poster, researching the artist that we were trying to
portray, researching the main story of this song, finding out any extra
information about music video conventions, theories for music video,
and software's that we have used.
Slideshare
I am currently using slideshare to answer questions about
creating my media products. This is very easy to use as
all you do is use a basic windows software “PowerPoint”
and import it into slide share.
Prezi
This was also used to help me answer questions. Prezi is
a U.S. software company, producing a cloud-based
presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting
ideas on a virtual canvas. This was very easy to use as
you can create slides in order to evaluate your work.
Facebook.com
This was used for
feedback off our
audience. We asked
friends on
Facebook, and in
person to watch our
music video and
give us
improvements.
Dafont.com
This was great to help us portray text that our music video
artist tries to portray. This font is normally a handwritten
style which was easy to find. This website is simple to use
where you can find a font and install it onto your
computer. We used this font for our digipak and our
poster.

We used this through; the internet (social media, evaluations of work, YouTube, wordpress), Photoshop final cut, PowerPoint, Microsoft word.
  • 4. Video Camera The camera we used was a canon legria hf r406. This is a HD camera that is secure Digital and can record at a medium quality. We used this to record all the footage for our music video and used another camera for our digipak photo‟s. This camera also had a 4 GB, class 10 SD card and used a SD card reader with a USB integral to download all footage recorded. To make all camera movements smooth and persistent I also used a “Amazon basics” tripod.

  • 6. Xserve- network drive on user accounts and backup. The Xserve can be used for a variety of applications, including file server, web server or even high-performance computing applications using clustering – a dedicated cluster Xserve, the Xserve Cluster Node, without a video card and optical drives are also available. Our Xserve is controlled by our IT services where all our work is backed up with over 256 GB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM (1.33 GHz) 512 GB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM (DP 1.33 GHz) of memory. This involves user accounts also being backed up
  • 7. Epson V300 scanner This was used in order to show all our planning for our music video. This includes our story board and set ups. This helped with organization of our music video as well as having a virtual and hard copy.
  • 8. IPhone 5 This has been used for playing the song for the music video in order for the main performer to get an idea for timing, lyrics and rhythm. With the 8mp of camera, we could film the audiences feedback with a High Definition view and good quality sound.
  • 9. Software In this half of the slide show I am going to list and explain all the software‟s that we have used to create our music video. We are also going to create an on-screen video of us talking step by step all the software‟s that were needed. Software is anything that can be stored electronically, in contrast to storage devices which is hardware. The software we used to create our music video was: - final cut pro x v.10.0.9 which needed a file convertor - Adobe Photoshop c55 - QuickTime player v7 - Microsoft word and PowerPoint - OSX v/0.6.8 Apples operating system (Safari) Online software/websites - Wordpress - YouTube - Google - Slideshare - Prezi - Facebook
  • 10. Final cut pro X v.10.0.9 Apple. Final cut pro was the main software that we used to create our music video. In final cut pro you can insert music and footage and make them fit in with each other, adding special effects that can make the video seem more exciting for the audience. In our music video we used various effects and transitions including: - Colour grading, firstly adding a colour balance to adjust the colour and make it more balanced and natural (not too bright), on the same clip we added a vignette and customized it to add a white frame to our mirror effect scene. - Cross dissolve effect- combining scenes to overlap. This helped us keep the narrative and performance link in together. - We also used Colour Match where we matched all the clips we made to have the same lighting and to look similar. We completed these transitions and effects by keeping the „Inspector‟ open to see exactly what effects we were applying to our footage. When we filmed our footage it was saved as a AVI format instead of a MP4, we then had to use a File converter (Free video converter V.2.30 Leand) to change the format of the footage to make it correct to the format we needed for final cut. We did this by inserting the original AVI format into the converter, selected MP4 and pressed „Convert‟, following this we then re-downloaded it in its new format.
  • 11. Adobe Photoshop C55 Photoshop was used to create our Digipak and our advertisement for the Digipak. Photoshop was a great way to add special effects onto photos taken to make it fit in with the genre we were trying to portray. Firstly we inserted the images we had taken, we then shaped them to our specification, once we had the correct images we then edited them (saturation turned to low, filter- artistic water colour, as shown on the clip below), finally we added the text that was needed (which was previously downloaded from dafont.com)
  • 12. Microsoft word and PowerPoint I used Microsoft word as part of my planning stage in my music video. I pasted the lyrics onto the document then analyzed each verse to tie in with the story we were trying to portray. This helped me greatly in the way that I could see exactly if the lyrics went with the story. I used Microsoft PowerPoint to complete my Software and Hardware question as I could plan out what I was going to talk about in a way that would be clear for the examiner.
  • 13. OSX v/0.6.8 Apples operating system This was the main source for research and for us to answer any evaluation questions. This, on a apple computer is known as safari. I used safari for; - Wordpress.com (blogging) - YouTube - Google (search engine) - Slideshare - Prezi - Facebook - Dafontcom
  • 14. Wordpress.com WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content-management system based on PHP and MySQL, which runs on a web hosting service. I used wordpress to analyze music videos, plan my music video and my Digipak, and answer any questions about my work.
  • 15. YouTube This was a great research engine that was used to create my music video. I used YouTube to compare typical indie songs, songs that talk about heartbreak and love, and the music videos that our artist typically uses (looking at forms and conventions, and how artists portray stories).
  • 16. Google- Search engine Google was used for everything; gaining ideas for the music video, digipak and poster, researching the artist that we were trying to portray, researching the main story of this song, finding out any extra information about music video conventions, theories for music video, and software's that we have used.
  • 17. Slideshare I am currently using slideshare to answer questions about creating my media products. This is very easy to use as all you do is use a basic windows software “PowerPoint” and import it into slide share.
  • 18. Prezi This was also used to help me answer questions. Prezi is a U.S. software company, producing a cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. This was very easy to use as you can create slides in order to evaluate your work.
  • 19. Facebook.com This was used for feedback off our audience. We asked friends on Facebook, and in person to watch our music video and give us improvements.
  • 20. Dafont.com This was great to help us portray text that our music video artist tries to portray. This font is normally a handwritten style which was easy to find. This website is simple to use where you can find a font and install it onto your computer. We used this font for our digipak and our poster.
