MEDIA EVALUATION
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED
FROM YOUR AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK?
QUESTION 3
WHAT IS AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
Audience feedback is an interactive response between
the presenter and their audience. To receive feedback,
carrying out questioning styles such as questionnaires,
interviews, focus groups and scoring systems allows the
presenter to understand what aspects of their
presentation gain positive responses, and what aspects
gain negative responses.
(This is my interpretation of the Google definition.)
So to apply it to my A2 Media project, I am the
‘presenter’ and my media products (music video, digipak
and advertisement poster) are my ‘presentation’. My
audience that I wish to receive relevant feedback from
are my target audience of females aged between 15-22
who enjoy indie-alternative music.
AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE
FROM MY TARGET AUDIENCE
This is Eliza. She is 18 years old and currently in Year
13, going on to university in September to study music.
She enjoys going out with her friends and boyfriend and
often goes clubbing and into central London as she
enjoys the night life there. Eliza has an older brother who
is the guitarist in a band with his friends and loves
listening to them play.
This year she has already been to three concerts:
The 1975, The Weeknd and also Catfish & Bottlemen.
These three artists all create music in Eliza’s favourite
music genres: R&B, indie and alternative rock.
Eliza is a perfect example of an individual in my target
audience as she is within the age range and takes
interest in music that falls into my music video’s genre
category.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM MY
MUSIC VIDEO SONG CHOICE
When I chose the song to use for my music video, I immediately wrote down
an initial ides plan of what I originally thought of to put in my music video. I
then asked a friend who fit my target audience to give it a listen and let me
know what they thought. I also went on to ask them what they thought of
whilst listening to the song. Her response was perfect as it almost matched
my initial ideas plan for the music video.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM MY MUSIC
VIDEO SONG CHOICE (continued)
However, at this point I had only asked one person and this would have been a biased and small
sampling to gain feedback from. Therefore, I asked my class peers to all listen to the song and
note down what they would imagine to be in the music video of this song.
Luckily, they all wrote down common themes and similar suggestions. This meant I was already
off to a great start.
This was my
response to
the class
feedback

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM
MY MUSIC VIDEO PLANNING
This is a questionnaire made up of 14 questions asking about the person answering the questionnaire and about
the song for my music video. This questionnaire allowed me to gain even more external opinions about content of
the music video but in more depth and guidance through the structured questions.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM
MY MUSIC VIDEO PLANNING
After collecting my completed questionnaires,
I was reassured that my music video
construction plans were on track as they all
had similar themes and comments – just like
the individual feedbacks I previous received. I
created the questionnaire so I could gain
more specific answers. At this point, I had
plenty of audience feedback from my music
video planning therefore was ready to begin
the creation of the media product!
When making my music video I made sure to
reference back to suggestions made by my
target audience. For example, in this
questionnaire, I used suggestions such as the
actress in the music video wearing a floral
headpiece and a flowy dress.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM MY MUSIC
VIDEO
Feedback for my second draft:
After taking my previous feedback into account, I made a second draft and
asked for new comments and ideas. I asked a 15 and 13 year old for their
comments as I had realised I had not yet asked anyone younger than 16 years
old until now.
Feedback for my first draft:
I received mixed feedback for my first draft. I was told the lip syncing was perfectly timed with the
song, and that I had very good camera shots and film footage. However there was room for
improvement. I took this into consideration and moved some shots around, took away some
footage and replaced it with new footage.
I continued to receive
comments to improve my video,
however more positive than
negative this time. This meant
my video was improving after
using audience feedback. I then
went on to create my third (and
final) draft…
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM
MY MUSIC VIDEO
After receiving feedback on last bits of alterations
and adjustments to my music video from my second
draft, I finally created my final draft! I sent my final
draft to an 18 year old male and a 17 year old female
and also my teacher. I sent it to these three people
so I my feedback wasn’t gender biased (I do not
want to target one gender as that restricts my
audience) and I was able to gain feedback from both
genders and what they think works well in the video.
I also used my teacher so that I can receive as much
advice how to make my music video look
professional and also receive a mature response.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM MY
ADVERTISEMENT POSTER
When I asked for feedback
from a number of people, I
received very positive
comments, and the kind of
responses I aimed to
receive. This meant I did
not have to make any more
adjustments or edit my
media product. I was glad
to receive comments such
as “an indie vibe” and that
“the colours work well” as I
aimed to make these things
prominent in my work and
continually thought of these
aspects throughout
creation.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FROM
MY CD DIGIPAK
Just like my main media
product and my first ancillary
task, this second ancillary
task also gained positive
feedback. Feedback
included “typography’s look
professional and edgy” and
“the pastel colours connote a
relaxed and airy vibe, which
creates ideas abut how the
song will sound”. I was
extremely pleased with the
comments from my target
audience. Therefore, I
believe if my media products
were put out to public and in
real life, it would be
successful.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
THROUGH USE OF AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK
I have learnt that audience feedback has a huge impact on the
final outcome of my work.
Receiving suggestions, comments, disapprovals and appraisals
throughout the construction of my media products enabled me to
gain a wide understanding of others opinions and just how much
they can have an effect.
The audience is the most important aspect of media when it comes
to the exchange in media processes. Without an audience, there
is no point in making the media text in the first place.
Therefore I have learned the value of audience feedback as it has
only a positive impact on media products; for it improves the
product itself and also the public feedback on the product once
distributed.
