2. During the creative process of this project, one of the things I have kept in mind was the house style for my products. From very early on, creating the Brief in Powerpoint I had an idea of colour schemes and styles that I liked and wanted to keep consistent throughout my project Black background, very simple, makes everything on top of the background a lot of focus. Plain black connotes simplicity but also style. White text above black background gives the text more focus and makes it stand out. Links to how we branded our band, very stylish, attractive. Exotica font, decorative. Very decorative complex font, but very simple colours, good balance.
3. Exotica Font When I first saw the Exotica font on dafont.com, I thought it was very interesting. It reminded me of the band Panic at the Disco. They have a similar house style and often use a similar sort of serif decorative typeface. Although, Panic at the Disco are a completely different band to careful jepson and are from a completely different genre, there are some similarities between the band. For example, both bands are made up of four reasonably attractive males. Both bands have a large focus on their lead singer as their ‘meat’ and both bands are extremely musically talented. Besides this, I genuinely thought the font looked very intricate and eye catching, and from that very early point I wanted to use it as part of the house style for my band. Another similarity between Panic at the Disco and Careful Jepson is that although neither of the bands are strictly indie, they could both appeal to an indie audience, which is why I thought that this font could be a coherent aspect of my project, that could appeal to my target audience. Therefore this brand image that I was creating using the exotica font fit into my product placement, as I thought that my magazine cover could be in an indie magazine, and the font is quite similar to the brand images of other bands found in indie magazines. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
4. House Style in the Photoshoot I kept the house style for the whole project, consistent in all of the photographs I took for my digipak, by having the photo shoot in the same place as the video was filmed. This meant it has the same conventions, i.e the performance area and the grand piano. This worked well when creating the digipak because it all had the same look as the video. In my view it worked really well. Certain conventions such as the black grand piano and the black curtains, in contrast with the red seats in the background worked really well and fit in with the classic and stylish theme that I wanted. At this point, colour schemes started to create themselves, for example, we already had the classic white on black and this matched the piano, we also had a white girl in a black dress. But we also had red seats and red lipstick.
5. Colour Scheme The red in the video and in the photo shoot, gave me a good idea for the rest of the digipak design, for example, instead of having the white typeface on the cover, I used the same font but in red. I still used the white version on the cover, but the red on the cover, gave it a sexy and vibrant edge. It also made the text stand out from the white shirt in the background. Blue in our models shirt also gave it a slight edge without going too far out of our house style. Having made the digipak and the video, I think I was successful in creating a sexy, classic and stylish looking project as well as having kept within a house style. I feel it looks very effective and would appeal to a young indie audience as well as an older jazz fan audience.
6. In Conclusion In all I feel that I have created a set of different media products that fit the brief for their purpose, have the classic stylish look that I wanted to achieve initially and also have a good house style that is consistent throughout. The video I created is a successful music video and also set the trend for all of the print work which has a similar brand image. I used conventions form the video to create a colour scheme for all of the print work and I feel that this would create a recognizable look to the products and therefore each product will have a good marketing strategy because they advertise each other. Even the magazine cover which has the common linguistic style for it’s product placement in an indie magazine has the same look that audiences can recognize.
