2. HOME DUST MONITOR
Aim: To design a dust monitor that notify households on
when to clean their apartment.
Description: Most of the cheaper dust monitors have the
challenge that they start producing erratic readings
after long usage because their sensing element has been
covered with dust. In this project a team of 4 persons
looked on the existing technologies for detecting dust
and came up with a novel approach to measure dust
concentration. Once the concentration goes above a
harmful threshold, the monitor alerts the user to clean
the apartment. The dust monitor data were used to start
a smart vacuum cleaner.

3. HOME DUST MONITOR
Description:
Usually a smart vacuum cleaner uses time
dependent command inputted by the user to trigger
the start function of the vacuum and then cleans the
apartment. That is, the user sets the time for the
vacuum to start working. But by using the signal
from dust monitor, the vacuum becomes dust
concentrate dependent instead of being time
dependent. Thus generating the best time for the
smart vacuum to start cleaning operation.

4. HOME DUST MONITOR
Role: I worked as a project manager and also a
prototype engineer. In addition I was responsible
for procuring the necessary parts for the prototype.
The dust monitor was tested over a period of 5
months and the data from the monitor were
constantly sent to trigger the start command of a
smart vacuum cleaner.
Result: This dust monitor was able to measure
concentration of dust in the home over a long
period of time without having its sensing element
damage.

7. Design Of A Baby Safety Guard (BSG)
⦿ Aim: The aim of this project is to identify a
social problem and provide IoT solution.
⦿ Result: After series of iterative ideation and
conceptualization session, we came up with a
detailed design of a BSG device to assist
parents in better monitoring of their kids at
home.
⦿ My Role: I worked as a prototype engineer and
also a programmer.

10. BREAK DOWN BIO
⦿ Aim: To design an industrial composter for
waste management and also use it as an
educational tool for kids within the
community.
⦿ Description: Biolan Oy gave a project to a
team of 12 students to design an industrial
size biowaste composter within a year. The
composter must fulfill the following
requirements:

11. BREAK DOWN BIO
✓ It should be able to convert biowaste into
manure in less than 6 weeks.
✓ It must be greater than the maximum size
(900L) currently sold by the company.
✓ It should be light and easily transportable.
✓ There should be a way to mix the waste
during composting.
✓ It should be easily adoptable globally.
✓ It should operate well in all seasons.

12. The composter was designed based on the given
requirements. The design process was done by
first carrying out detailed research on the
composting (biodegradation) process. This was
followed by series of brainstorming sessions on
reducing the composting time, Selecting the shape
(exterior and interior) and size. Then, detailed
mechanical design analysis were carried out on the
selected shape, material, mixing mechanism, filling
and empting of composter, and monitoring system
(level, temperature and oxygen sensor). The
design parameters were used to select the best
manufacturing technique for a working prototype.
The prototype was made with carbon fiber as can
be shown in the diagram below.

14. Role: I worked as a mechanical design
engineer in this project. During the project, I
also assisted in prototyping and
testing/observing of the composter filled with
biowaste during winter.
Result: Our client was very satisfied with the
design. Most of the design requirements
were met except for the malfunctioning of
mixing mechanism.

16. KUBISENSE SMART COOKER
Aim: To design an affordable industrial smart
cooker for preparing African-based food with
ease.
Description: The idea came about when a friend
and I were called to come assist in preparing
(mixing) cassava staple for a 76 people’s party.
Ever since then, I have been brainstorming
various ways to make this preparation process
ease. As time went on other friends and
colleague bought into the idea and we have been
working on it once in two weeks.
Result: So far we are still conceptualization
phase

In working on these projects, I have improved
and learnt some valuable personal skills. These
are:
⦿ Good communication skills.
⦿ A great team player.
⦿ Good time and task management skills.
⦿ Take leadership role when the need arises.
⦿ Motivate other team members when they are
falling short in commitment.
⦿ A good listener.
⦿ Hardworking.
