2. Etymological Meaning:-
The word education is derived from the latin
words, Educare, Educere, and Educatum.
Educare means “to bring up” or “to nourish” i.e .,
child is to be bought up while keeping in view
certain aims and ideals.
Educere means “to draw out” or “to lead out”i.e.,
education is to lead out or to draw out best in
child or man.
Educatum means “the act of teaching” or “the act
of training”i.e., education is teaching the child or
traning him for the best.
3. Synonyms:-
Pedagogy: pedagogy means “to lead the boy”
It is a science of instruction for purposes of
leading the pupil.
Shiksha: Similarly the word shiksha is used
for education. Which means to discipline to
control or to instruct or to teach.
Vidya;- which means to know.
4. Indian concept of Education:
Rigveda-Education is that which makes a man
self reliant and selfless.
Upnishads;- education is that whoes end
product is salvation.
Kautilya’s ;- training for the country and love
for the nation.
Vivekananda;-Education is the manifestation
of divine perfection already existing in man.
Shankracharya:-education is the realisation of
self.
5. Tagore:- Education means enabling the mind
to find out the ultimate truth which emancipate
us from the bondage of the dust and gives us
the wealth, not of things but of inner light, not
of power but of love , making the truth its own
and giving expression to it.
Ghandhi;- By education I mean an allround
drawing of best in child and man, body, mind
and spirit.
Zakir Hussain:-Education is the work of whole
life . It begins from the time of birth and
continuous till the last moment of death.
