William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He married Anne Hathaway at age 18 and had three children, but also worked as a playwright and actor in London beginning in the late 1580s. By the 1590s, he was writing mostly comedies and had joined an acting troupe called the Lord Chamberlain's Men. In 1599, he helped purchase and rebuild the Globe Theater, where his company performed. The open-air Globe could hold up to 3,000 spectators and had minimal scenery, using trapdoors and sound effects to enhance productions.
