There is no certain birth date of William
Shakespeare.
His estimated birth date is 23rd April 1564.
He was brought up in Stratford on Avon.
Many people believed that Shakespeare wrote only
38 plays. However, a new play has been added to the
queue which is named as “Double Falsehood”
It is said after the death of Shakespeare this play
was found with one of the writers who is now dead
but it is evident that this was a forgery.
Shakespeare wrote five long narrative poems plus
154 sonnets
Shakespeare was widely known as a actor,
playwright and poet.
He died at age of 52 in year 1616.
Shakespeare's work has made a lasting impression
on later theatre and literature.
Shakespeare was not revered in his lifetime, but he
received a large amount of praises for writing plays,
comedies and sonnets.
• The theme of the play is
that of revenge, family ties
and corruption.
• It is Shakespeare's longest
play and it is regarded as
one of the influential play
whose themes are still
present in the society
today and that’s why
several movies are being
made on hamlet which
gives the play a title:
“modern Hamlet”
The theme of the play is
that of fate versus Free
Will, Public Self versus
Private Self, power &
Legacy.
Believed to have been
written in 1599.It portrays
the conspiracy against the
Roman dictator Julius
Caesar, his assassination
and the defeat of the
conspirators at the Battle of
Philippi. It is one of several
plays written by
Shakespeare based on true
events from Roman history.
. SOME THEMES
INCLUDE:
 ISOLATION: During
the course of Othello,
the main character
named Othello is kept
out of touch with the
other characters.
 CURIOSITY KILLED
THE CAT: Othello was
very curious about why
his wife would cheat on
him.
 Is about an aging king of
Britain who decides to
divide his kingdom equally
among his three daughters.
However, the three
daughters are put through a
test asking each to
acknowledge how much
she loves him. General and
Regan, Lear's older
daughters, give their father
flattering answers, but
Lear's youngest and
favorite daughter,
Cordelier, remains silent,
which makes the king to
disown her.
• The story is about two
young people who fall in
love. Their families
disapprove of the match
due to strive. The young
lovers decide to die
together rather than live
life apart.
• This story brings up
issues about young love
and the emotional toll
such a secret love brings
about.
Themes (issues are society based)
Metaphor
For E.g. 'My father's brother, but no more like my father
than I to Hercules' where Shakespeare suggests that
Hamlet's father and uncle were actually alike.(hamlet)
Dramatic Foil (two characters having different
personalities)
For E.g. Tybalt's aggressive attitude and peaceful
manner of Benvolio.(romeo and juliet)
Round characters
- Characters with many different characteristics. For e.g.
Shakespeare describes hamlet as depressed, angered,
smart, loyal, remorseful.
Flat characters
- Characters with one or two personalities. For e.g.
Polonius is described as sneaky and foolish (Hamlet)
Static Characters
- Characters who do not change their mind, opinion or
personality. For e.g. Benvolio, who is kind and
sympathetic throughout the entire play (Romeo & Juliet)
Dynamic Character
• Characters that change their personality, or attitude. For
e.g. King Lear changed his personality from a
tyrannical & arrogant man to judgemental man when he
realizes his mistakes.
Soliloquy
• an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself
or regardless of any hearers, esp. by a character in a
play. For e.g. After Othello falls into his trap, Iago is
alone on stage, and plans to talk to Bianca.(Othello)
Pun
The humorous use of a word, or of words which are
formed or sounded alike but have different meanings.
Situational Irony
Refers to a gap between what is expected and what
occurs. For e.g. The Capulets finds out that Juliet has
died, but the audience knows that she is not dead, but
has drank a sleeping potion which allows her to appear
dead.
Shakespeare’s concept of tragedy and conflict is
mostly popular among directors who make films.
The reasons for this is:
Life and society is full of tragedies and conflicts
amongst humankind. Hence, the films made on
Shakespearean concept are chosen to give a real picture
about tragedies and conflicts through visualization.
Films made on Shakespeare's works gives a realistic
view to the audience/viewers.
Sometimes works of Shakespeare is hard for readers to
read. Through films we can understand the themes and
works of Shakespeare described in books.
Shakespeare based films helps to understand the
situation of the society.
Gives inspiration in people’s life.
