LEVEL: Intermediate (B1)
TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Individual and pair work
  SKILLS: Speaking

AIM
   • To practise modal verbs and the language of giving opinion.

LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL AREA
  • Modal verbs of obligation (have to, must), lack of obligation (don’t have to,
don’t need to), prohibition (mustn’t, can’t, not be allowed to), speculation
(must, might, may, could) and advice (should, shouldn’t).
  • Vocabulary related to giving opinion (I think, I believe, I agree, I disagree…).

TASKS
  • To complete a modal maze by making sentences
    with modal verbs.

PREPARATION AND MATERIALS

For each student:
      • One copy of the modals maze board.
      • One copy of the modals statements.
      • One copy of the modals answers.

For teachers:
       • One copy of the key of the modals maze boards.
       • One copy of the key of the modals statements.

TIMING
+30 minutes.

PROCEDURE
  • Tell students that they are going to complete a maze that contains different
types of modal verbs. Hand out a copy of the modals board and a copy of the
modals statements for each student. Explain how to do a maze and give
examples of the different types of modal verbs.
  • Students have to read their 8 statements and choose the correct modal verb on
the maze. They have to use arrows or linking lines to the surrounding squares
making a path beginning on the START square and finishing on the END
square. Make sure students understand all the vocabulary on the statements.
  • Distribute a copy of the modals answers. Students correct each other’s maze
    using this handout.
  • In pairs, students decide whether their statements are true or false and/or
whether they agree or disagree with them. The teacher can circulate and
    monitor the students’ discussions.
ANSWERS

  • Students’ answer sheet and teacher’s keys.

         • The teacher can project the key of the modals maze board so that students can
check their maze and make corrections, if necessary.
