Maybe SEO Is
Not The Answer
Why I decided not to
deliver the SEO results
my client asked for.
@FrankCJones
Corporations & Niche Sites
Working as a content writer from 2010 until 2015, I had numerous clients hire
me for a range of projects.
The most successful ones had a sales funnel and monetization strategy
behind them.
Getting ‘Likes’ on Facebook and followers on Twitter is not a strategy.
Large corporations and small niche websites all suffer from a lack of planning
and monetization.
@FrankCJones
What I do
You know how some people are great at
building an audience, but struggle to earn a
living from that work?
I help entrepreneurs with an audience find
the money hiding in their business.
@FrankCJones
Here’s What I Did To Help 12X One Client’s Income
1. Examine the current business model.
a. Compare sites with similar business models.
b. Project revenue growth
c. Identify alternative or complementary sources of revenue
2. Start with the easy wins
a. Launch an MVP
3. Automate
a. Set expectations
b. Put it in writing @FrankCJones
The Business Model
@FrankCJones
Examine the current business model
Take a look at similar sites in your industry or niche.
How are they monetizing their traffic?
Owned products and services
Subscriptions
Affiliate offers
Advertising space
What sales funnels are in place?
How are these sales funnels setup?
Don’t innovate before learning the basics, copy sales funnels that work @FrankCJones
What will more traffic do for you?
One corporate client wanted to get more traffic to their blog. When I asked
why, they simply said that content marketing was a popular strategy they had
heard a lot of experts talking about.
^ This is not a strategy ^
Another client with a niche site wanted to double their traffic so they could
double Google AdSense revenue.
^ This is an expensive strategy ^
@FrankCJones
Monetizing with ads is
tough
@FrankCJones
Small Wins
@FrankCJones
Start with the easy wins
Try something and improve it if there are sales.
If you’re offering a product or service that doesn’t generate sales, fix it or drop it.
The goal is not to keep working on something until it takes off, rather you need to find something
that takes off and improve it over time.
The Raleigh SEO Meetup Conference is a great example of this process. I tried short courses, but
dropped them when there were not enough sales. This allowed me to focus more energy into
making the conference even better.
@FrankCJones
Automate & Innovate
@FrankCJones
Automate
Since you’re starting with easy wins, these are often projects that don’t scale.
Before you can automate, you must agree on terms - and put it in writing.
Then you can create business processes and systems to serve your clients and customers.
After the business processes are in place, you can consider software solutions that replicate these
processes.
@FrankCJones
Innovate
Some of what your client want will be missing from your first offer.
Other things you included with the first offer may be profitable, but not as profitable as other parts.
Cut the things that don’t make enough money, and double down on those that offer the most value
to your clients.
Develop innovative ways to deliver your unique selling point.
@FrankCJones
Now You Can SEO
@FrankCJones
Target profitable traffic
Now that you have a sales funnel, you’re ready for paid traffic and SEO.
Every traffic source will cost you time or money - or both.
Bringing in traffic without a plan to monetize is never a good idea.
@FrankCJones
Only invest in traffic
after you have a sales
funnel
