The document discusses navigating matrix organizations and making them work effectively. It begins with an overview of different types of organizational structures, including centralized functional, multi-divisional, and matrix structures. The matrix structure aims to achieve the benefits of both functional expertise and divisional market focus. However, collaboration does not happen automatically and requires explicit strategies, structures, and systems. Potential sources of collaborative value are then outlined, including financial, customer, process, and learning & growth synergies across business units. Overall, the document argues that matrix organizations can enhance competitive advantage by optimizing both global/group and local tradeoffs, but it requires collaborative strategies, structures, and systems developed by the corporate center.

Matrix went into beta in December 2014, and here we are, almost one year later! In this talk, we want to have a look at where we are with Matrix today, and what people in the community have done with Matrix. We will look at the whole ecosystem that has emerged – from glossy client apps, SDKs and servers, to Application Services and bridges to SIP, IMS, XMPP, Slack, Lync etc written by the community. Matrix is also the missing standard HTTP signaling protocol for WebRTC, acting as an open standard for decentralized, persistent communication.

Surviving in a Matrix: Simple Techniques for Effective Project Management in ...Dr. Thomas Juli
In this webinar (first given on 2 October 2014) I introduce a simple, yet very pragmatic approach to structure, plan and set-up a project in a matrix organization with strong line management and a weak project culture. I explain the need and value for developing a compelling project motivation, vision and objectives. I outline how to engage stakeholders in building a work package structure, outlining a project organization, implementing an early warning system for plan deviations, establishing risk analysis and management. Last but not least, I elaborate on how to cultivate continuous learning in a matrix organization.
Ten tips for best practices in managing virtual work teams using the web. Good team management is tested by having employees in remote or distant locations. Success depends on a little creative thought when adding exciting new tools that will assist you with your good old-fashioned management skills. Choose tools that are gaining traction and your virtual team management life will not only be productive, but it can be a lot of fun.

Making Architecture Business Value Driven - Dave Guevara
The Denver IASA June 2008 meeting looked at the Business of Architecture. This discussion will look at one part of the broad topic, the business and strategic alignment processes that align IT to be business value driven.
The alignment that we will focus on is between the strategic intent of a company, and the capabilities that are needed to implement the business processes and technologies that will execute that strategic intent. A case study example will be used to illustrate some of the “how to” methods for doing this in your organization. This session will be interactive.
In addition to discussion these new concepts relating strategic intent to capabilities (Business, Organizational, Technical, Integration) we will also take a brief look at getting from capabilities down to User Story inventories and ultimately into services development. Recent feedback from the Agile conference was that these concepts and their use were spot on to where the thought leadership is moving to in the Agile field.
Measurable Management™ brings tangible, measurable results including costs savings, increased productivity, improved efficiency, reduced waste, and a positive attitude for change with your workforce. The measurable outcomes will provide a return on investment greater than the cost . . . we guarantee it!
