Etymologically the term ‘Mathematics’ is
derived from two Greek word ‘Manthanein’ and
‘Techne’. ‘Manthanein’ means ‘learning’ and
‘Techne’ means ‘an art or technique’. Therefore
Mathematics means the art of learning related to
disciplines or faculties.

Need and Significance of Learning
Mathematics
It is necessary that every child should learn Mathematics
because;
 The study of Mathematics develops the ability to transfer
the mathematical type of thinking and reasoning to daily
life situations.
 A good mathematical background with the knowledge of
concepts and theories is essential for meeting the
challenges of the modern technological society.
 Mathematics learning helps to apply mathematical
concepts and theorems to new situations.
 The study of Mathematics provides sufficient
mathematical skills to meet the demands of daily life.
 Mathematics learning helps in a better understanding of
the world around us.
 Mathematics provides a framework for solving problems.
 The study of Mathematics develops logical thinking and
reasoning, critical mind and creative imagination.
 Mathematics is an essential element of communications.
 Mathematics learning helps to think alternative methods
of solving problems.
 Mathematics learning inculcates a good deal of self-
reliance, self-confidence, tolerance and open-mindedness.
 The study of Mathematics develops ability to make
independent decisions in societal issues.
 The study of Mathematics enhances the ability to apply
mathematical ideas and relationships to areas outside
classroom such as art, science and other curricular areas
and in everyday life, especially physical phenomena.
How to Develop Maintain Interest in
Mathematics?
A Mathematics teacher should be well trained with the
means and techniques of provoking and stimulating
interest in Mathematics. Some of the devices and
techniques which are most appropriate are;
 By introducing an element of novelty.
 Emphasizing the practical application of Mathematics.
By organizing mathematical activities for intellectual
challenge.
 Through use of audio-visual aids and practical work.
 By ensuring students understanding.
 Using Mathematics for fun and recreation.
 By arranging for field work and field trip.
 By improving problem-solving ability.
 Through use of incentives.
However, a teacher can always adapt techniques which
are most appropriate for his/her students.

MATHEMATICS and How to Develop Interest in Maths?

  • 2. Etymologically the term ‘Mathematics’ is derived from two Greek word ‘Manthanein’ and ‘Techne’. ‘Manthanein’ means ‘learning’ and ‘Techne’ means ‘an art or technique’. Therefore Mathematics means the art of learning related to disciplines or faculties. MATHEMATICS
  • 4. i. Mathematics is a Science of Discovery. ii. Mathematics is an Intellectual Game. iii. Mathematics Deals with the Art of Drawing Conclusions. iv. Mathematics is a Tool Subject. v. Mathematics is a Systematic Deductive Science. vi. Mathematics is an Experimental, Inductive Science. vii. Mathematics Involves an Intuitive Method. viii. Mathematics is a Science of Precision and Accuracy. Nature of Mathematics

Need and Significance of Learning Mathematics It is necessary that every child should learn Mathematics because;  The study of Mathematics develops the ability to transfer the mathematical type of thinking and reasoning to daily life situations.  A good mathematical background with the knowledge of concepts and theories is essential for meeting the challenges of the modern technological society.
  • 7.  Mathematics learning helps to apply mathematical concepts and theorems to new situations.  The study of Mathematics provides sufficient mathematical skills to meet the demands of daily life.  Mathematics learning helps in a better understanding of the world around us.  Mathematics provides a framework for solving problems.  The study of Mathematics develops logical thinking and reasoning, critical mind and creative imagination.  Mathematics is an essential element of communications.
  • 8.  Mathematics learning helps to think alternative methods of solving problems.  Mathematics learning inculcates a good deal of self- reliance, self-confidence, tolerance and open-mindedness.  The study of Mathematics develops ability to make independent decisions in societal issues.  The study of Mathematics enhances the ability to apply mathematical ideas and relationships to areas outside classroom such as art, science and other curricular areas and in everyday life, especially physical phenomena.
  • 9. How to Develop Maintain Interest in Mathematics? A Mathematics teacher should be well trained with the means and techniques of provoking and stimulating interest in Mathematics. Some of the devices and techniques which are most appropriate are;  By introducing an element of novelty.  Emphasizing the practical application of Mathematics. By organizing mathematical activities for intellectual challenge.
  • 10.  Through use of audio-visual aids and practical work.  By ensuring students understanding.  Using Mathematics for fun and recreation.  By arranging for field work and field trip.  By improving problem-solving ability.  Through use of incentives. However, a teacher can always adapt techniques which are most appropriate for his/her students.
