17. Super Typhoon Haiyan moves towards the Philippines November 7, 2013 in the Pacific Ocean. The
storm is packing sustained winds of 140 mile per hour (225 kilometers per hour) as it heads towards
the island country.
Typhoon Yolanda or Haiyan, strongest typhoon in the Philippines.
18. The Vigan Cathedral in Ilocos Sur is
damaged by the magnitude 7.3
earthquake that hit Abra on July 27,
2022.
19. A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck in Ishikawa prefecture in central Japan on
Monday afternoon,January 1,2024, triggering tsunami warnings for regions along
the western coast.
20.
21. Some natural disasters occur with little to no warning. Hence, the
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC)
organizes important conferences and briefings to prepare people for
natural calamities. Today, it remains a challenge for the government to
effectively manage the aftermath of a natural disaster. However,
modern technological developments have been developed to help
predict calamities such as tsunamis. For Instance, the formula that
allows weather forecasters to predict the speed of a tsunami in
kilometers per hour (kph), is given by s = 356√d, where d is the depth of
the sea or ocean in kilometers(km). Using this formula, what will be the
depth of the sea when the tsunami is travelling at a speed of 712kph?
Mathematics Investigation
22. Let’s do it!
Based from the problem in Math Investigation, to find the depth of the sea
when a tsunami is travelling at a speed of 712 kph, substitute s = 712 into the
formula s = 356√d and solve for d.
712 = 356√d
712/356=√d
2=√d
The resulting equation is a radical equation. To solve for d, square both side of
the equation.
(2)〖^2〗=(√d)〖^2〗
4 = d
Therefore, the depth of the sea is 4km when the speed of the tsunami is
712kph.

Directions: Solve the following radical equation by following the steps.
Steps in solving radical equation.
1. Isolate the radical on the left side by applying the appropriate properties of
equality.
2. Combine similar terms when possible.
3. Remove the radical sign by raising both sides of the equation to the index of the
radical. (e.g. 2 for √, 3 for 3√)
4. Solve the resulting equation.
5. Check the solutions for a possible presence of extraneous roots.
√3x+3 - √5x-1 = 0

34. SCIENCE IN MATH!
Solve the given problem:
The velocity of an object with known mass and
kinetic energy is given by v=√(2E/m)
where v is the velocity in ms-2
E is the kinetic energy, measured in
joules
m is the mass in kilograms.(kg)
What is the kinetic energy of a 49kg-object that
moves at 25 meter per second(m/s)?
35. REMEMBER
• Radical equations are equations containing radicals with
variables in the radicand.
• To solve equations with radicals, place the radical expression
on one
side of the sign of equality, and then raise both sides of the
equation to the index power to eliminate the radical and solve as
usual.
• Test the roots, discarding those that are extraneous.
Extraneous solution is a solution that does not satisfy the given
equation.
