The light that is visible to the
human eye and responsible for
our sense of sight is called
visible light. Our primary source
of light is the sun.
The straight lines where light
travels is called rays.
White light is an example of a
visible light that is composed of
different colors with different
wavelengths.
The separation of white light into
its component colors is called
dispersion.
A transparent object that
separates white light is called
prism.
THE TRANSMISSION OF LIGHT
Transmission refers to the passing
of light through some materials. For
example, when light passes through
a glass window, it is transmitted to
the otherside, allowing the light to
pass through the window.
Absorption of Light
Absorption refers to a material’s taking in
of light and not reflecting it back. For
example, when light strikes a black surface,
it is absorbed by the surface and nothing is
reflected.
Dark colors absorb a lot more heat than
lighter ones because they absorb more light
energy. In fact, the closer to black a color is,
the more heat it absorbs from light sources.
Blocking of Light
What happens when an object is
placed in the path of light?
Light travels in straight lines. It
cannot bend to travel around objects;
if it did we could see around corners!
When light is blocked by an object a
dark area or shadow is formed.
Objects that allow light to pass through are said
to transmit light are described as transparent.
Clear plastic and glass windows are examples of
transparent materials.
Some other materials can transmit light but allow the light to
scatter and diffuse, making it difficult to distinguish the objects
that are behind them. We called these materials as
translucent. Stained glass and frosted windows are examples
of translucent materials.
Materials that do not transmit light at all and they are called
opaque materials. Concrete walls, wooden doors, and mirrors
are examples of opaque materials.

waves through them are called optically

surfaces. Some materials absorb all these
wavelengths well, while others are better
suited to a certain restricted types of light.
Opaque objects block light from traveling
through them. Most of the light is either
reflected by the object or absorbed and
converted to thermal energy.
