3. MATERIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE
SYSTEM[1]
 Defined as the art and science of moving, packing
and storing of substances in any form.
 Also MH and Storage is the efficient short-distance
movement of goods that usually takes place within
the confines of a building such as a plant or a
warehouse or between a building and a
transportation agency.

4. OBJECTIVES[1][2]
 Main objective is to reduce the number of units as well as the
overall cost of material handling and equipment and
reducing the distances through which the materials are
handled or storage.
The other objectives:-
 To provide better control of the flow of materials.
 Lower unit material handling and storage costs.
 Improved working conditions and greater safety in movement
of materials.

5. IMPORTANCE OF MATERIAL HANDLING

 Material Handling and storage are increases
effectiveness of in plant layout by reducing the
cost.
These movements do not add value to the
product but they do add value to the cost.

 Conveyors
◦ Belt conveyors, Chain conveyors, Roller
conveyors, bucket conveyors, screw conveyors,
pipeline conveyors, vibratory conveyors, chute or
gravity conveyors.
 Cranes, Elevators and Hoists
◦ Cranes – overhead rails or ground rails or
wheels
◦ Elevators – between floors – vertically
◦ Hoists - vertically, horizontally – limited area –
electric or chain hoist

of metal fabric

13. Chain Conveyor- Motor driven chain that
drags material along a metal side base.

loads roll on top of a series of rollers mounted
on a rigid frame.

21. TYPE OF STORAGE SYSTEM AND ITS
EQUIPMENTS[4]
 Automated storage and retrieval system(ASRS or AS/RS):-
An automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS or AS/RS)
consists of a variety of computer-controlled methods for
automatically placing and retrieving loads from specific storage
locations.
 An automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS) is a storage system
that performs storage and retrieval operations with speed and
accuracy under a defined degree of automation.

22. Equipments
 Products such as pallet racking, shelving, carts, etc.
belong to storage.
 A pallet is the structural foundation of a unit
load which allows handling and storage efficiencies.

23. HOUSEKEEPING
 Storage areas must be kept free from accumulation of
materials that create hazards from:

◦ Fire
◦ Explosion
◦ Pest harborage

24. ESSENTIAL OF GOOD MATERIAL
HANDLING OR STORAGE SYSTEM[1][2]
 Efficient and safe movement of materials to the
desired place.
 Timely movement of the materials when
needed.
 Supply of materials at the desired rate.
 Storing of materials utilizing minimum space.
 Lowest cost solution to the materials handling
activities.

25. DISPOSAL OF WAST MATERIAL[5]
 An enclosed chute must be used
when dropping material more than
20 feet outside of a building.
 When debris is dropped through
holes in floors without the use of
chutes.
 Area must be enclosed with
barricades.
 Warning signs must be posted at
each level.

26. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS[6]
•Chemicals
• Nylon web slings shall not be used where fumes, vapors,
sprays, mists or liquids of acids or phenolics are present.
• Polyester or polypropylene web slings, or web slings with
aluminum fittings shall not be used where fumes, vapors,
sprays, mists or liquids of caustics are present.
•Heat
• Synthetic web slings of polyester and nylon shall not be
used in excess of 180 deg. F (82 deg. C).
• Polypropylene web slings shall not be used at
temperatures in excess of 200 deg. F (93.33 deg. C).
