The Impact Of Disney Films On Children
The Impact of Walt Disney Productions on Children A young girl with black hair and brown eyes sees
a beautiful princess named Cinderella who has blond hair, blue eyes, and flawless skin. She believes
she will never be as radiant and beautiful as the princess because they don t look alike. Like this girl,
there are many cases of Disney films having lasting negative effects on children. Disney influences
children more than any other age group since most merchandise and movies are geared toward
younger audiences around thirteen or younger. Walt Disney Productions have a negative effect on
children through stereotypes, violent actions, and sexism presented through its characters physical
characteristics and actions. Disney has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After ten seconds, he then asked them to describe how each individual imagined the character.
Predictably, nearly every participant described Disney s 1950 animated blonde Cinderella (294 295).
This information indicates how severely society is affected by Disney s films. Sadly, not being
recognized might be a good thing versus being misrepresented. A character s representation is just as
important as being recognized, if not more. If a character misrepresents a group of people, it can
further influence negative stereotypes toward those people. A prominent misrepresented character in
the Disney franchise is Pocahontas. Do Rozario and Rebecca Anne C. recognize the drawing of
Pocahontas in the cartoon animated film makes her the most sexually endowed of all the female forms
that appear (51). With the way that Disney presented and sexualized Pocahontas, it leads to how
misrepresented Native Americans are and how Disney often misinterprets historical facts in their
productions. Negative stereotypes are not just found in Pocahontas but also in a propaganda video
produced by Disney named Education for Death back during World War II. It negatively presents
Germans as brainwashed individuals who are solely alive for the purpose of fighting in war. The story
follows the childhood of a blonde and blue eyed child named Hans who grows up learning the German
ideals, eventually becoming a brainwashed German soldier (Geronimi). Despite not many

Canine Bone Development And Developmental Diseases
Canine bone development and developmental bone diseases are of growing interest to researchers and
consumers. In order to produce healthier canines and to reduce the incidence of diseases commonly
found in canines, it is important to understand what bone development is and how it occurs, factors
that influence bone development, and developmental diseases. Development can be defined as a series
of changes that takes place in an animal beginning in the embryonic state and lasting until maturity.
These changes lead to a more complex organizational state of the body, starting with simple cellular
organization and leading to formation of body systems.
Ossification Mechanisms
Intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification are the types of bone development that
occur during fetal development. Intramembranous ossification is the formation of flat bones (i.e,
cranial bones). The first stage of this type of ossification is the formation of an ossification center in
the fibrous connective tissue membrane. The ossification center is formed by mesenchymal cells
differentiating into osteoblasts. The osteoblasts then secrete osteoid into the fibrous membrane and is
subsequently mineralized. As the osteoid accumulates, it is laid down between fetal blood vessels,
forming woven bone. The vascularized osteoid then condenses and forms the periosteum. The final
stage of intramembranous ossifcation is the formation of the the bone collar in compact bone and the
formation of red

“the Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd”
The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd By Sir Walter Raleigh Summary: The Nymph s Reply to the
Shepherd is Sir Walter Raleigh s response to a poem written by Christopher Marlowe, The Passionate
Shepherd to His Love. In the Marlowe poem, the shepherd proposes to his beloved by portraying their
ideal future together: a life filled with earthly pleasures in a world of eternal spring. Raleigh s reply,
however, debunks the shepherd s fanciful vision. While Marlowe s speaker promises nature s beauty
and a litany of gifts, Raleigh s nymph responds that such promises could only remain valid if all the
world and love were young. Thus, she introduces the concepts of time and change. In her world, the
seasons cause the shepherd s shallow rivers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Raleigh reiterates many of Marlowe s images and ideas, but distorts them through the lens of time.
The same alliteration is also used in both; there is, however, a marked difference in their sounds.
Marlowe alliterates softer m and l sounds, giving his poem the aforementioned rolling aspect. Raleigh
imitates Marlowe extremely well, but there is a telling difference that can be noted in some places;
Raleigh uses a rougher alliteration of sounds like hard c and t to give his poem a more mocking,
satirical bent. This is especially prominent in the second stanza of Raleigh s poem; while Marlowe s
second stanza has the softer alliterative sounds, Raleigh s stanza moves stiffly with the c sounds in
complains of cares to come (8). The metrics of Raleigh s poem are also in and of themselves a direct
reply to Marlowe s. Raleigh uses the same iambic tetrameter that Marlowe uses, organizing the poem
into four line stanzas composed of two rhyming couplets each. He achieves an oddly mocking tone
with the meter because of the words involved. Although the words still flow because of the regular
meter, they are decidedly less romantic and are juxtaposed with the meter. Examples of this are the
harsh alliteration in complains of cares to come (8) or the rolling, soft sound that wayward winter s
reckoning yields (10). Although the metrics are regular and fall soft on the ear, the subject matter is
darker and uses the meter to make fun of Marlowe s

Geographical Location Of The Aegean World Essay
Geographical location: The Aegean world is composed of three distinctive regions, all located at the
Eastern edge of the Mediterranean: the island of Crete, the mainland of Greece, and the islands
between the mainland and the coast of Anatolia. There are signs of earthquake damage at many
Minoan sites and clear signs of both uplifting of the land and submersion of coastal sites due to
tectonic processes all along the coasts. The Mycenaean citadel on Mainland Greece stands high above
the Aegean Sea, surrounded by walls of stone so large they are called Cyclopean, as if only the mythic
giant Cyclops could have moved them into place. Climate: Religion: The Minoans seem to have
worshipped primarily goddesses, and their culture has been described as being based on a matriarchal
religion. It was not dominated by fertility any more than any religion of the past or present has been,
and it addressed gender identity, rites of passage, and death. It is reasonable to assume that both the
organization and the rituals, even the mythology, resembled the religions of Near Eastern palatial
civilizations.Although there is some evidence of male gods, depictions of Minoan goddesses vastly
outnumber depictions of anything that could be considered a Minoan god. While some of these
depictions of women may be images of worshippers and priestesses officiating at religious
ceremonies, as opposed to deities, several goddesses appear to be portrayed. The people of the
mainland, the Mycenaeans,

Ajax Dark Arrow
Once upon of time there was a boy born to a family named the Wardors. The Wardors were unlike
most things that lived in the Sector 989 Galaxy. They were skilled craftsmen who made cosmic or
space weapons and sold them to anyone they could find. One Thing they sold were these things called
black hole grenades. The black hole grenades transported anything that was thrown at them to some
random black hole in the galaxy. Another weapon was the dark arrow. The dark arrow was an normal
sized black arrow but it didn t need a bow, it could move and fire with one simple thought. With the
black arrow came a leather jacket with a hood, the hood sensed the thought of the user and did what

Sexism in Our Society Essay
Sexism in Our Society
Sexism has always been a major issue for women. It seems that today, everyone has to be careful of
what they say and do so as to avoid offending someone. While everyone is busy worrying about
extinguishing sexism towards women which still is an issue that needs to be taken care of, who is
concerned with sexism towards men? Sexism is just as much of an issue to men as it is to women.
Many people believe that men have advantages over women when comes to a topic such as
occupation. Although this may be true, in some cases it is in fact exactly the opposite. Today?s society
is so concerned with political correctness and equal rights to women that it has almost completely
forgotten about equal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elizabeth Cady Stanton is a fine example of sexism toward men. While defending women?s rights and
making a stand against sexism toward women in her piece Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions,
Stanton demonstrates (many times) examples of sexism toward men: ?The history of mankind is a
history of repeated injuries?on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the
establishment of an absolute tyranny over her? (165). By blaming men for every repression women
have suffered over the years, Stanton is completely contradicting her argument by being sexist toward
men.
In a more modern example, a 2004 study by Peter Glick and Robin Wells, both of the Department of
Psychology at Lawrence University, involving sixteen nations showed hostile attitudes toward men. ?
Stereotype measures indicated that men were viewed as having?more powerful traits than women. The
authors argue that hostile?attitudes toward men reflect and support gender inequality by characterizing
men as being designed for dominance.?
This leads to the subject of how men have been viewed throughout the course of history. In the past,
men have been seen as the protectors and providers of the household, just as women have been most
popularly viewed as

Examples Of Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird
The United States, for hundreds of years, was what the majority of the world looked at as the prime
example of racism and discrimination. A pitiful example of how humans can treat each other under the
right conditions. The lynching, torture and outright cold blooded murder of African Americans in the
USA. This behaviour was evident (mostly within the South) after the influential Plessy v. Ferguson in
1896 onward, up until the Civil Rights movements which managed to squash much of the institutional
discrimination. One could see a manifestation of this in 1960, with Harper Lee releasing the classic
racial commentary To Kill a Mockingbird , she managed to illuminate many injustices faced by the
Black communities in the deep South scrutinising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The injustices served to the Black community were fought, often lost, but nevertheless fought. The
African Americans of the South were being stripped of their right to a fair and just trial to degrade
African Americans as a people. We see this in the many trials which unjustly convicted innocent
African Americans, To Kill a Mockingbird does a great job at illustrating this, Harper Lee uses Tom
Robinson along with a clearly obvious court case (in favour of Tom) to clearly show the extreme bias
within the courts, as Tom does not receive the respect, or consideration of the White jurors or
prosecutor (with Tom, in turn, being sentenced to death when he is clearly innocent). Harper wanted to
show that, while Blacks were being given their constitutional right to a fair trial, these trials, were far
from fair, they were a despicable combination of Kangaroo Court and Show Trialing and the book
helped bring this fact to light for many northern readers whom may not come across such information
otherwise. But there were many triumphs as well, the court case known as Brown v. Board of
Education , one of the most influential cases in all of civil rights history. It proved that Blacks are still
resilient to the discrimination within their society and that change, especially in regards to education
(one of the most important parts of one s life). Brown v. Board of Education led to the end of
segregated schools in the U.S., ruling them to be unconstitutional, overriding the ruling of Plessy v.
Ferguson (that being, separate but equal, which ended up as an Orwellian more equal than others
scenario). This ruling meant that children of all races would be allowed to enjoy the fruits of Western
education, it empowered the next generation of African Americans, not simply in a civil mentality
way, but in a literal

Society s Pokemon Impact On Children And Society
Nintendo s Pokemon franchise is a rare beast in a field of short lived children s cultures. The series,
which began in the realm of handheld video games, quickly developed into one of the longest running
anime television series, an ongoing series of manga volumes, feature films, music and an ever
expanding realm of merchandise (McCormick, 2000). The success of Pokemon is partly attributed to
its ability to target a younger demographic almost exclusively. Parents in the nineties would rush out
to pick up a Pikachu themed Gameboy or the latest Pokemon game for the N64 console for their kids
(Buckingham, 2007). The impact of Pokemon on children as a whole is significant. This research will
explore the impacts of Pokemon fandom on children by focusing on three different aspects: 1) the
impact among children; 2) the impact between children and parents, and; 3) the impact between
children and society. For the purpose of this research, we will only investigate the impacts on children

Wedding Crashers By David Dobkin

Wedding Crashers is a popular film from 2005 directed by David Dobkin. The top stars in Wedding
Crashers include Owen Wilson as John Beckwith, Vince Vaughn as Jeremy Grey, and Rachel
McAdams as Claire. The movie begins as the main characters (John and Vince) who are divorce
mediators in Washington D.C. go to crash a wedding held for the U.S. Secretary of Treasury s
daughter. While at the wedding Jeremey ends up finding another sister of the bride, Gloria Cleary and
ends up hooking up with her at the wedding. While Jeremey is occupied with Gloria, John also finds

night. At a point during the night, Kathleen Cleary, the wife of William Cleary, seduces John, making
him grasp her breast. The second affair occurs that same night when Gloria s brother, Todd enters
Jeremy s room and jumps on top of him and asks him to play tummy sticks. The plot twists in the
movie can also be seen when the wedding crashers get exposed by Sack and their real identities are
shown to the Clearys. After being exposed to the Clearys, John and Jeremy were told to leave by the
William Cleary. Jeremy would secretly continue his relationship with Gloria while John would go on a
downward spiral of depression. Wedding Crashers does not have a lot of history in the movie due to it
being a strong comedic film with a hint of romance in it but it does reflect human nature. Throughout
the film, people are generally happy such as weddings and affairs, but even with happiness comes
downfalls such as when John and Jeremy get exposed and have to leave the Clearys or when John

Wedding Crashers lacks in the intelligence value as well as the director s craft value. The main focus

Material Possessions In The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant
Many people in today s society allow material possessions to control their life. They believe society is
defined by brand name clothing, expensive cars, and excessive amounts of money. A person who is
obsessed with materialistic things will never truly be satisfied or happy with life. Guy de Maupassant
depicts a clear example of this modern day misfortune in the short story The Necklace. By looking at
syntax, symbolism, and vocabulary used in The Necklace, we can see that Maupassant clearly
illustrates the theme that a desire for material possessions has great power to destroy an individual,
which most people do not recognize. This is important because anyone can get consumed in

Their conversation is short, and Madame Forester is taken back by the new, changed Madame Loisel.
The syntax of this conversation is short. Because of its brevity, Maupassant suggests that Madame
Loisel has greatly changed and longs for her simple life. When she lost the necklace and had to work
for ten years to repay it, she took on more responsibility through labor. It took a toll on her body, and
she yearned for her less complicated life. Later in the paragraph, on the top of page 28, the sentence
structure starts to become more lengthy. Madame Loisel tells Madame Forestier that she bought a
diamond necklace like the one she lost and Loisel and her husband have been working to repay the
debt for ten years. She says, I brought you back another just like it. And for this we have been ten
years paying. You can understand that it was not easy for us, who had nothing (28). In this passage, as
the sentences get longer, it suggests that the length of time that Madame Loisel has been working to
repay the money has been long. It has aged her greatly and her life now is much more complicated
than before. The lengthy sentence structure supports the theme that material possessions have the
power to destroy an individual. When Madame Loisel was forced to repay the debt of the necklace she
had lost, she and her husband had to work for a decade. The physical labor made them both mentally
and physically

Henry Ford Hospital s Marketing Strategy
Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, is a level one trauma center that is recognized for clinical excellence

Health Systems has over 23,000 employees, and is the fifth largest employer in the Metro Detroit area,
and is also one of the most diverse health systems (Henry, 2016). An important aspect of a marketing
strategy is finding the right price for products, and services. Price is the only element in the marketing

The cost of the device is over one million dollars, and does not include the cost of software upgrades,

expensive device is expected to have a positive return on investment, which will more than cover the
cost of the device, and other services. When formulating a pricing strategy it is imperative that
organizations establish a strategy that will sustain a profit. When considering costs, organizations need
to know what it can afford to pay, while taking into account the prices the market allows, as well as
allowing a profit. According to the article by Sorenson, Drummond and Burns, when using the
bundling strategy, CMS does not consider the cost relative to alternative treatment options in its
pricing (Sorenson, Drummond, and Burns, 2013). Instead, the payments are based on estimates of
average costs. This particular pricing strategy includes add on payments based on the higher cost of
the device. The high cost of the BrightMatter device will allow Henry Ford Hospital to receive add on
payments, that equivalent fifty percent of the additional costs of using the new device in a case
(Sorenson, Drummond, and Burns, 2013). Formulating a pricing strategy for the device, BrightMatter,

Attitudes Between Men And Women
In the election held in 2013, only two WC made it to the parliament, although women made up more
than 53% of the electorate. These two candidates received the highest number of tweets about the WC
before the election.
RQ1: Attitudes according to gender
While the negative tweets outnumbered the positive ones (31% negative versus 21% positive), the
women tweeters expressed significantly more positive attitudes towards WC than the men tweeters did

Women tweeters were more interested in showing a positive attitude toward a candidate because of

Research Paper On The Enlightenment
The ideas of the Enlightenment did not simply emerge, accidentally, from the heads of certain
thinkers. They were at least a partial reflection of changes taking place in the relations between human
beings change which had gone furthest in Britain and Holland. The central change through the turmoil
of the 16th and 17th centuries was that exchange through the market played an increasingly dominant
role in the way people obtained a livelihood. The church might burn heretics and the Habsburg armies
sack urban centres opposed to their rule. But popes, emperors, princes and lords all required cash to
finance their efforts and this meant that, even while trying to preserve the old order, they helped

terms of cash. The Enlightenment was a recognition in the realm of ideas of this change taking place
in reality. Its picture of a world of equal men (although a few Enlightenment thinkers raised the
question of equal rights for women) was an abstraction from a world in which people were meant to
be equally able to agree, or fail to agree, to buy and sell goods in their possession. The rational state
was one in which this could take place without arbitrary obstruction. Yet there were two great holes in
the Enlightenment picture as applied in the 18th century and not just to backward regions of Europe
such as Castile, Sicily or eastern Europe, but to Britain, the model for people like Voltaire. One was

Chad Hines Mimi Analysis
Chad Hines s Mimi is a contemporary artwork that uses a multitude of media wood, fabric, paper,
metal, and paint, to name a few. The piece is currently located at CTC s annual faculty art show at the
Oveta Culp Hobby Memorial Library. It depicts a bust shot of an elderly woman, presumably Mimi
herself. Surrounding her is a jumbled conglomeration of materials. The piece is displayed on a wall at
eye level, bound by a frame.
To give a clearer understanding of Mimi s appearance, it is approximately two feet by two feet, with
most of the composition being taken up by the woman. She is drawn onto a material and is surrounded
by a primarily dark background, save for the very top region, which is an off white. In the regions
surrounding Mimi, there are materials like papers, textiles, and metals haphazardly affixed to the
framework, almost all of which contributing to the dark background, save for a select few accent

The Impact Of Ray Charles On American Culture
The impact that Ray Charles has had on American culture is nearly indescribable. Although unable to
see, he was successful in making his artistic visions come to life by fusing the sounds of blues, gospel,
jazz, and R B, making him one of the leading soul artists of the 1950s. The legendary musician is
recognized for being a pillar in the industry, credited with making strides in desegregating musical
genres. Although he composed many of his early hits, Charles is considered to be an interpreter of
music, offering his distinct personal vision of many classics. Over the course of his career, which
spanned five decades, he recorded over 60 albums and sold millions of records worldwide. Ray
Charles was born on Sept. 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia, and grew up in Greenville, Florida. At the
young age of five, he began losing his sight, and became completely blind by the time he was seven.
However, this did not hinder Ray Charles at all, as he continued to persevere in developing his
musical talents. One of the most unique aspects of Ray Charles was his unparalleled ability to
crossover different genres of music. He mixed together genres such as blues, jazz, gospel, R B, pop,
and even country. With this integration, he created smash hits such as I Got a Woman, Hit the Road
Jack, and I Can t Stop Loving You. When a listener listens close enough to one of Charles songs,
aspects of the various styles he incorporated can be heard not only through the way the lyrics are

My Experience As A Male Dominant Culture
Enculturation is when people learn about their own culture either passively or directly. We are
constantly learning about our culture even when we do not realize it. We learn about our culture
through different medias, such as our parents, relatives, and peers. My earliest enculturation
experience is when I was in kindergarten. I learned about culturally accepted behaviors for both
genders and experienced double standard between male and female. My family and my peers were the
most influential in this enculturation experience as they were the people I associated with during my
early childhood. My early childhood experience of double standard has shaped my values and how I
perceive my culture. Double standard varies culture by culture, in this paper, I will be explaining my
double standard enculturation experience in my Chinese culture.
In the Chinese culture, we are known to be a male dominant culture. Many traditional Chinese family
values the males in the family more than the females because males are usually the head of the family.
Males are given more freedom when they are growing up. Female children are often restricted to do
many activities because of society expectation for females role and behavior. For instance, males tend
to participate in masculine activities like Tae Kwon Do and football while females would participate
in feminine activities such as sewing and dancing. Not only there were gender appropriate activities,
but there were gender appropriate toys. In

Psychological Effects Of Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the nervous system and can develop in any person at
any age, although it s more common for men than for women (Carlson, Dugan, Kirsch, Friedman.
2014). There is a variety of seizures a person with epilepsy may experience depending on which
part(s) of the brain is affected by the electrical burst of activity in the brain and how much of the brain
is affected (Petersen, Walker, Runge, Kessler, 1998). Seizures symptoms can range from undetectable
to unconsciousness. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have
epilepsy, but the cause of the seizures is usually unknown at the time of diagnoses. A seizure occurs
when the brain s nerve cells misfire and generate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When violent, these seizures can result in dropping or involuntarily throwing objects, which are due to
rapid uncontrollable muscle movements (Cunliffe et al. 2014). The grand mal is a generalized seizure
that affects essentially the entire motor system. In this type of seizure, the patient loses consciousness
and usually collapses. There is a loss of consciousness then the body stiffens for about thirty to sixty
seconds, then violent jerking and then the brain usually goes into a deep sleep to rest. The grand mal
involves tonic, the stiffening of muscles, and clonic, the jerking movement of muscles. A person can
just have tonic but in order to have clonic, tonic will come first. The petit mal is a generalized attack
where the brain is overwhelmed with activity, but the motor system isn t affected (Cunliffe et al.
2014). The two main types of seizures (partial and generalized) can easily be confused depending on
severity, but they are both treated differently medically. A person who has had two or more of any type
of unprovoked seizure in his/her lifetime is considered to have epilepsy. Epilepsy affects about 1% of
the world s population and one out of every twenty people will experience a seizure in their lifetime
(Cunliffe et al. 2014). Each case represents itself with a unique treatment, prognosis and combination

The Best Education System Is Improving The Progression Of...
Education, according Merriam Webster s dictionary, means the knowledge, skill and understanding
that you get from attending a school, college, or university. Furthermore, Education in its simplest,
teaches us to become more productive citizens while simultaneously opening magical doors for
aspiring pupils to explore. As the late Martin Luther King aptly put it, Intelligence plus character that
is the goal of true education. The key to having the best education system is constantly moving
forward with legislation and initiatives. Subsequently, state legislatures and school districts pass
initiative plans in hopes of promoting the progression of a child s education. However, the complexity
and inefficiency of the total U.S. system can lead to bright children being left behind. The task of
running the education behemoth is largely left up to the 50 states. All of the states, excluding Hawaii,
have a common hierarchical structure (highest to lowest): state legislatures, state departments of
education/boards of education, state commissioners, school districts/boards, and school
superintendents. Traditionally, state control over education was vested in state boards of education.
These boards formally have the power to decide everything from teacher certification to textbook
selection. However, in practice these boards rely heavily on the recommendations of the state
commissioner of education and the state department of education. All states have a C.E.O. (Chief

The Epic Of Gilgamesh, And The Mahabharata
The journey, the hero, the triumph, and the defeat are all elements that some of literatures greatest
works have encaptured, such as: the Ramayana, The Epic of Gilgamesh, and the Mahabharata. Each of
these texts depicts a hero or protagonist that is unique to their culture and although each of these
heroes embark on a different journey with different purposes and goals in mind, they all display a
variety of features that people of then and now can relate to. It becomes transparent that each of the
journeys these heroes undertake are a lot like that of the lives of people today. The Epic of Gilgamesh
is one of the oldest pieces of literature known to man. Written in 2700 B.C.E this epic poem centers in
on an ancient king of Uruk in present day Iraq. When we are first introduced to Gilgamesh, the king of
Uruk, we see that he is a tyrant ruler which is one third human, two thirds divine and in endowed with
immense strength. Instead of serving his people he suppresses them and engages in immoral behaviors
fit for a king. The behaviors result in a backlash from his citizens and the nobles began to complain
bitterly about these behaviors. The gods eventually intervene and in order to tame Gilgamesh s wild
spirit they create his equal, Enkidu, whose purpose in this epic poem is to help guide Gilgamesh in
becoming a better person and a better king for his people. Before Gilgamesh is introduced to Enkidu
there is little in his life that offers meaning to him, yet he still

Essay on Visual Acuity as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity
Visual Acuity Measured as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity
Visual acuity is a measure of an observer s ability to see fine spatial detail (Cavonius amp;
Schumacher, 1966). There are a number of factors that affect visual acuity, such as illumination and
contrast, and various ways to measure it (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). One way to measure visual
acuity is through target detection which requires the perception of the orientation of a stimulus such as
a Landolt C or a Snellen E (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). The participant in the current experiment
was referred to have their acuity tested. Target detection of a stimulus was used to measure the
participant s visual acuity as a function of retinal eccentricity of the target. ... Show more content on

The height and width of this optotype is designed to be five times the thickness of the stroke width and
gap width, therefore the size of each critical detail is 1/5th of the overall height (Kalloniatis amp; Luu,
2005). Four stimulus sizes were used in the experiment as visual acuity was to be tested at four
eccentricities (0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚). These four stimulus sizes were calculated using the approximate
minimum angle of resolution (MAR) of each eccentricity obtained from Millodot et al. s (1975)
normal data. This value was then used to find the gap size and hence the stimulus size using a distance
of 600cm. The reason for using the distance value of 600cm was because it is close to the threshold
and therefore would be the starting point of stimulus presentation for each of the eccentricities. The
formula used was: gap size = 600*tan(MAR˚) ˃˃ size = 5 (600*tan(MAR˚))
The stimulus sizes (and critical feature sizes) calculated and used for the eccentricities 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and
60˚ were 0.9cm (0.18cm), 2.2cm (0.44cm), 6.13cm (1.23cm) and 17.5cm (3.5cm) respectively.
Procedure
As already stated, it was decided by the experimenter to test visual acuity at the following
eccentricities: 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚. Measuring the MAR at each of these eccentricities would give a
good indication of where the participant s visual acuity measure lies in comparison to normal data.

man struggling with his own sexuality, Billy, a stuttering very insecure young man, Martini, always
smiling and very simple minded, and Chief, an enormous Indian who everyone is fooling everyone

By placing an example of the speaker s self esteem between two different displays of the speaker s
strength, Angelou establishes the influence self esteem has on a person s strength to continue after

The Gaze On Women s Cinema
Abigail Brill
Long Proposal
24 February 2015
The Gaze on Women in Cinema
Cinema has a very powerful influence on us, whether we are aware of it or not. Cinema tells us, in a
way of reflection, how we are to act and respond as a society. For example, in movies women with
body hair are portrayed as shamed, unhygienic, and usually rejects to sexual advances. I ve started to
recognize these consistent stigmas, but this is just one example of what I believe makes the male gaze
so successfully prevalent in American cinema.
Starting in the 1970s, women have been portrayed in film through various misogynistic lenses: the
male gaze, voyeurism, and sexual objectification; these lenses are still rampant today in modern
American film. Apparently, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These films are not creative; they are mere replications of an era in film started as early as the 1960s.
American film has been using the enticing appeal of women s bodies to subtlety promote aggressive
voyeurism since films such as Hitchcock s Rear Window, and David Lynch s film Blue Velvet.
Voyeurism and spectatorship are exemplified in Hitchcock s film Rear Window from 1954. The film is
focused around the situation of the main character, Jeff, looking through his binoculars into a woman s
apartment across from him. The film employs a powerful photographic lens with its use of cut shots
that only show Jeff s optical perspective.
Hitchcock uses a standard eyeline match pattern, cutting from a shot of Jeff looking to a shot of what
he sees. Since there is no establishing shot that shows both Jeff and the opposite apartment, the
Kuleshov effect operates here: our mind connects the two images. More specifically, the second shot
represents Jeff s optical viewpoint, and this is filmed from a position on his end of the axis of action.
The camera has not crossed a line. We are strongly restricted to what Jeff sees and what (he thinks) he
knows.
(Bordwell)
As Rear Window continues, we see the objectification build up more and more intensity through its
technical uses and editing. Jeff s character attaches another lens to his camera to further magnify

Bruno Mars Grenade
In this generation, many popular musicians express the hardships brought forth by unrequited love in
their songs. It is probably one of the most commonly conveyed subjects. Music artists such as Bruno
Mars and his songs like Grenade is no exception to this popular trend. In the song Grenade, he reveals
his persistent devotion for a girl. Lamentably, as a victim of unilateral love, he is inferior in the
relationship. In the song, the girl seizes the dominant ability to manipulate Bruno Mars physical well
being and emotional negatively by being uninterested towards his love, and positively refusing to
return his affection. From such a position of inferiority, Mars uses numerous rhetorical strategies such
as literary devices, logical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Bruno Mars exhibits the extreme elongate to which he genuinely loves the girl in the song,
determined to persuade his audience that the girl should love him back. Mars uses words which allude
to violence, such as grenade , blade, and bullet to illustrate his deposition to experience physical pain
for the girl s affection. He constantly uses these words to indicate that these destructive weapons will
not hinder his obsessive love for her. In the chorus, his obsession with the girl is made even more
obvious because he proclaims that he would catch a grenade for her, throw his hands on a blade for
her, jump in front of a train for her, and take a bullet straight through his brain. His eagerness to make
such sacrifices is intentionally detailed in the chorus which, through repetition, places emphasis on
these phrases. These phrases or hyperboles integrate to Mars ethos because they enhanced his
character by disclosing his authentic commitment to sacrificing his entire life for the girl. In turn, the
ethos of credibility convinces the audience to take his side.
Mar s most vigorous appeal in this particular song is his emotional appeal, or pathos. While building
the legitimacy of his own character, he utilizes pathos in order to persuade his audience into
cerebrating that the girl should love him back. He does this by portraying

Comparing Eve And Goblin Market
After reading Christina Rossetti s poem Goblin Market, I can conclude that the poem has strong
allegories in reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. In the story of Adam and Eve, Eve is

and knows that she should not eat the fruit, but she does so anyway. Adam also knows that eating the
fruit is wrong, but after learning of what Eve has done, he eats the fruit as well because he loves Eve
and does not want to be without her. In the story, their actions ultimately lead to the fall of man and
the introduction of sin. The similarities between the story of Adam and Eve and Goblin Market hit me

Similarities Between Egyptian And Greek Women
To be a woman in any civilization is not an easy task. Even in today s century woman keep having
difficulties and differences with equality and rights. It is not surprising that those problems come from
many centuries ago. The best ancient civilization to be a woman was Egypt. They treated women
better than Roman Empire or Athens. That is why Egyptian woman became an example of female
autonomy in society for other civilizations. Egyptians view women and family as a crucial fact for
happiness and delight, they looked women as invidious with respect and not as objects like other
civilizations. In the first place, comparing contemporary women of Rome, Greece (especially
Mycenaean); Egyptian women live with a certain freedom, respect and free will, which put them in
many ways as equal as men. They could own property, borrow money, sign contracts, divorce, inherit,

Compare And Contrast New England And Chesapeake Colonies
New England and the Chesapeake Regions After the discovery of the New World, countries raced to
expand their empires into the Western Hemisphere. Two countries that were dominating the Americas
were Spain and Portugal. These countries were gaining much wealth and power from the New World,
and it resulted in an economic boom in both empires. This encouraged other countries, like France
and, especially, Britain to join in the competition. Britain joined the quest for land in the New World
because they sought to expand their empire, and compete with the growing powers of Spain and
Portugal. Britain quickly took the lead in the Western Hemisphere by conquering land from Natives
along the eastern coast of North America. Soon, Britain was developing colonies all over the East
Coast. Two regions in particular that Britain was controlling was the New England and Chesapeake
areas. Prior to 1700, New England attracted many families to settle there, while Chesapeake attracted
more men, New England was founded because of religious reasons, while in the Chesapeake, they
first were searching for gold. Although they had differences, both New England and Chesapeake
colonies had conflict with the Natives, and they both had internal struggles between the poor and the
rich. Demographics in the New England and Chesapeake regions differed greatly, while New England

the communications market in Hungary, including business services, residential services, Internet and
Mobile. Their parent company Deutsche Telekom wanted them to remain an integrated
telecommunications company. Since their objectives were laid out in front of them, they were facing a
stagnant fixed mobile market in Hungary with the only scope of expansion being the broadband
market. So their primary focus was on competitive response to the core customer base, consolidating
financial performance, increasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Matav is a telecommunications powerhouse. It has the infrastructure, the ability, the foresight and the
manpower to match any competition the foreign companies can offer.
Matav is a well established integrated communications company and has footholds in all the four
markets of residential, business, internet and mobile. They already have a lot of customer market in
the Hungarian environment. Familiarity with the local policies, business and customers makes Matav
even more powerful when it comes to dealing with competition. It could add additional services by
implementing new technologies on the current infrastructure to the current customer base and could
also attract a lot of customers by giving bundled service like fixed and mobile or fixed and internet
together.
Do Matav s international expansion plans make sense? Why?
Matav was taken over by a European Telecommunications giant. The line was clear. Since the
domestic market was completely overwhelmed by Matav, the only logical place to expand further was
another European company. Matav is already an integrated telecommunications powerhouse. There is
no new market it can create or develop within its own country to sustain development for it. There has
to be competition and scope for expansion by introducing new technology into third world countries.
This is very attractive when offered at a lower price than your local provider. Matav s international
plans make sense to me for precisely

Understand Child and Young Person Development
Sequence and Rate of Each Aspect of Development and the Importance of Them
When looking at and discussing a child s development, you have to remember that all children are
different and grow at different rates. Every child will follow the same sequence but they may not
necessarily do it at the same time as each other. For example, you could have two, 6 month old babies,
1 could already be able to crawl, and the other 1 may not have mastered it yet and may not until they
are a bit older. You must remember that your child is an individual and not group him with another
child and expect him/her to reach the milestones at the same time. It is important also that a

Immigration Policy And The United States

Immigration Policy This paper will be discussing immigration policy, what fixes the United States
needs to make to the current policy and what aspects should remain the same. This paper will first
discuss what our current policy is, then transition its focus to immigration quotas, border patrol and
security, and lastly discussing refugees. In order to reform the immigration policy, we must have an
open policy for refugees. We will allow refugees to enter while still maintaining secure background
checks and screenings. Along with that we must get all illegal immigrants currently in the United
States on a path to citizenship, and maintain our immigration quotas while still doing what we ... Show

This approach has great potential, but the influx of illegal immigrants will increase dramatically, and
this would never pass in congress. Our government should go the route of the 1986 and 2007
approach. This approach includes not letting illegal immigrants have immediate amnesty, but it put all
illegal immigrants in the U.S. at the time on a track to legalization (Bhagwati, Rivera Batiz, pg. 2). We
need to do this with the current eleven million illegal immigrants and then strengthen our boarders to
ensure we don t have as many illegal immigrants entering the country. This will be more effective than
trying to deport all eleven million illegal immigrants, but people are hesitant because people wonder
how this will stop illegal immigration. We can stop future illegal immigration from occurring by
promoting self deportation. After getting all eleven million immigrants on their path to citizenship, we
start using e verify, make it hard for future illegal immigrants to get work, education, transportation,
and housing. If a citizen cannot prove legal immigration status, and they cannot get basic necessities
like housing and work, then they will leave. Along with that, to prevent future illegal immigration our
government should not build a wall, rather we need to hire more border patrol workers to help secure
the United States. All new border patrol workers we hire should work on the southern border, because

Recommendations For Persuade Cafe
To: Jacqueline Marcus
From: Berlinda Pearson
Date: June 4, 2017
Subject: Business Improvement Program (Recommendations for Persuade Café)
Dear Jacqueline Marcus, my name is Berlinda Pearson; I have been hired to provide new ideas and
new recommendation for your business improvement program. As you know, Persuade Café offers
unpretentious coffee, tea, espresso drinks, bakery items, whole beans, and T shirts. Although these
products have proven to contribute to the success of Persuade Café, there are some must needed
changes that are necessary to compete with its competitors and sustain a competitive advantage. Based
on the survey results from customers, there were a number of 433 responses to an upgrade for bakery
items, décor, faster service, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that improper training is coming from various employees. In
order for the Café to become more successful, my recommendation is that they hire a training team
who will train all employees the same way, to eliminate inconsistency. Since employees are the front
line of the Café, it is important that Persuade Café make training a top priority.
 Installation of Wi Fi Free Wi Fi is becoming a prominent customer expectation, so with that being
said; it will benefit Persuade Café, and will increase the customers time spent on the premises.
Customers will visit more often because they can use their cell phone, tablet, laptop via Wi Fi. Small
businesses, such as Persuade Café might find themselves at a serious competitive disadvantage it they
do not install free Wi Fi.
By implementing these recommendations at Persuade Café, it is my belief that these changes over a
period of time will increase their customer satisfaction, become more inviting and attract new
customers, and increase employee morale. Informing existing customers and future customers of the
upcoming changes should spark some excitement. Implementing changes within a business takes time;
however it is to better serve

K2 And Spice
Synthetic cannabis, commonly known as K2 and spice , is a designer drug created to serve as a legal
alternative to marijuana. This recreational drug is simple to obtain in head shops and by internet order.
Marketing for spice is commonly disguised as an herbal compound including the brand name which
also serves as the classification of the synthetic cannabinoid based on structural modifications. Some
examples include CP for cycloexyphenol, AM for alkyl or N methylpiperidine replacements, JWH,
HU, and many more. Similarly to marijuana, K2 is typically smoked via water pipe, within cigarette
paper, or converted into a liquid for placement into electronic cigarettes for inhalation. 1 Synthetic
cannabinoids were created to bind the same receptors as the active compound in marijuana, Δ9
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 to obtain the psychotropic effects
such as euphoria. CB1 receptors are located within the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, basal ganglia,
cerebellum, in addition to peripheral organs such as the lungs, liver, and kidney. CB2 receptors are
noted to be located on immune and hematopoietic cells, therefore desired and toxic ... Show more

Russell On Truth
Bertrand Russell discussed certain problems he found with philosophy. Russell was concerned about
how much did we really know. There is the stuff we know with our mind when we have a particular
idea, and stuff we know through actually experiencing it which would justify it. But how do we know
if it is real, or even there, for that matter? Russell says, For if we cannot be sure of the independent
existence of object, we cannot be sure of the independent existence of other people s bodies, and
therefore still less of other peoples minds, since we have no grounds for believing in their minds
except such as are derived from observing their bodies (Russell, 47). How can Farmer Brown be sure
that the dairyman just didn t have an idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings us to knowledge of things. Russell believed that all of our knowledge, both knowledge of
things and knowledge of truths, rest upon acquaintance as its foundation. It is therefore important to
consider what kinds of things there are which we have acquaintance (Russell, 57). You know stuff
through acquaintance by directly experiencing it and you know stuff through description from hearing
what other have told you from there direct experiences. William James on the other hand would have
had different views than Russell in some aspects. James believed that you needed more than just an
idea to make something true, it needed power. James believes that truth is dynamic rather than static.
James feels truth happens when everything holds together, when what you believe actually fits in with
other things you also believe. While at the same time, James believed something is false when it doesn
t fit in with the systems of your beliefs. James said, The most violent revolutions in an individual s
beliefs leave most of his old order standing. Time and space, cause and effect, nature and history, and
one s biography remain untouched. New truth is always a go between, a smoother over of transitions.
It marries old opinion to new fact so as ever to show a minimum of jolt, a maximum of continuity
(James, 124). Truth is a web where each belief contributes to support our other beliefs. James would
have reacted

Student Academic And Social Success And Encourage Lifelong...
Introduction To maximize student academic and social success and to encourage lifelong learning and
citizenship. is the mission statement for Van Buren Elementary School. In order to maximize student
achievement teacher leaders and administration must work in unison to identify goals for
improvement. By analyzing data teacher leaders, administrators, and teachers can work together to
derive a goal in the area of literacy instruction pertinent to our school. According to Taylor and
Francis, By design or default, teachers also are leaders of change, whether they promote it, support it,
resist it, or ignore it. (Taylor Francis, 2014, 102 103) Henceforth, teacher leadership will be essential
to achieve our literacy instruction goals.
Identification of Problem Area
Iowa adopted a Universal Screener (FAST, Iowa Tier) in 2013, which is a universal screening in
reading for grades K 3. Students that scored substantially deficient in reading were then required to be
progress monitored weekly, provided intensive reading instruction, which includes 90 minutes a day
of scientific, research based reading instruction, notification of parents, and finally, grade level
retention if the student is not proficient by the end of third grade. The students in grades K 3 are
universally screened three times per year.
Iowa schools are also required to provide an intensive summer reading program for any student who is
substantially deficient in reading by May 1, 2017. Additionally,

International Adoption Analysis
Differing Viewpoints
The process of International Adoption raises passionate emotions and arguments on different factors
involving the process. Although organizations and groups are present in support of mainly the
proponent side, some are swayed by policies involved. Bethany Christian Services believes in
performing international adoptions as long as they follow the U.S policy involving court s consent and
the foreign countries policy. Whereas UNICEF will only perform international adoptions if the process
is done through the Hague Convention.
One group that clearly represents the common mission of International Adoption is Bethany Christian
Services (BCS). Through their ministries they aid to foreign children in over eighty locations
(www.buildingyourfamily.com, 1998 2016). With their large amount of locations they are able to
reach children and families all over the country, not only physically but emotionally as well. Bethany
Christian Services states, We feel it is our job to provide ministries for orphans and vulnerable
children (www.buildingyourfamily.com, 1998 2016). Because of their stance, they have taken many
actions towards this law. Those actions being: providing ministry, adoption services, pregnancy and
family counseling, foster care programs, refugee services, orphan care, and an infertility ministry
called Stepping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. The Impact Of Disney Films On Children The Impact of Walt Disney Productions on Children A young girl with black hair and brown eyes sees a beautiful princess named Cinderella who has blond hair, blue eyes, and flawless skin. She believes she will never be as radiant and beautiful as the princess because they don t look alike. Like this girl, there are many cases of Disney films having lasting negative effects on children. Disney influences children more than any other age group since most merchandise and movies are geared toward younger audiences around thirteen or younger. Walt Disney Productions have a negative effect on children through stereotypes, violent actions, and sexism presented through its characters physical characteristics and actions. Sadly, not being recognized might be a good thing versus being misrepresented. A character s representation is just as important as being recognized, if not more. If a character misrepresents a group of people, it can further influence negative stereotypes toward those people. A prominent misrepresented character in the Disney franchise is Pocahontas. Do Rozario and Rebecca Anne C. recognize the drawing of Pocahontas in the cartoon animated film makes her the most sexually endowed of all the female forms that appear (51). With the way that Disney presented and sexualized Pocahontas, it leads to how misrepresented Native Americans are and how Disney often misinterprets historical facts in their productions. Negative stereotypes are not just found in Pocahontas but also in a propaganda video produced by Disney named Education for Death back during World War II. It negatively presents Germans as brainwashed individuals who are solely alive for the purpose of fighting in war. The story follows the childhood of a blonde and blue eyed child named Hans who grows up learning the German ideals, eventually becoming a brainwashed German soldier (Geronimi). Despite not many ... • 3. Canine Bone Development And Developmental Diseases Canine bone development and developmental bone diseases are of growing interest to researchers and consumers. In order to produce healthier canines and to reduce the incidence of diseases commonly found in canines, it is important to understand what bone development is and how it occurs, factors that influence bone development, and developmental diseases. Development can be defined as a series of changes that takes place in an animal beginning in the embryonic state and lasting until maturity. These changes lead to a more complex organizational state of the body, starting with simple cellular organization and leading to formation of body systems. Ossification Mechanisms Intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification are the types of bone development that occur during fetal development. Intramembranous ossification is the formation of flat bones (i.e, cranial bones). The first stage of this type of ossification is the formation of an ossification center in the fibrous connective tissue membrane. The ossification center is formed by mesenchymal cells differentiating into osteoblasts. The osteoblasts then secrete osteoid into the fibrous membrane and is subsequently mineralized. As the osteoid accumulates, it is laid down between fetal blood vessels, forming woven bone. The vascularized osteoid then condenses and forms the periosteum. The final stage of intramembranous ossifcation is the formation of the the bone collar in compact bone and the formation of red ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. “the Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd By Sir Walter Raleigh Summary: The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd is Sir Walter Raleigh s response to a poem written by Christopher Marlowe, The Passionate Shepherd to His Love. In the Marlowe poem, the shepherd proposes to his beloved by portraying their ideal future together: a life filled with earthly pleasures in a world of eternal spring. Raleigh s reply, however, debunks the shepherd s fanciful vision. While Marlowe s speaker promises nature s beauty and a litany of gifts, Raleigh s nymph responds that such promises could only remain valid if all the world and love were young. Thus, she introduces the concepts of time and change. In her world, the seasons cause the shepherd s shallow rivers ... Raleigh imitates Marlowe extremely well, but there is a telling difference that can be noted in some places; Raleigh uses a rougher alliteration of sounds like hard c and t to give his poem a more mocking, satirical bent. This is especially prominent in the second stanza of Raleigh s poem; while Marlowe s second stanza has the softer alliterative sounds, Raleigh s stanza moves stiffly with the c sounds in complains of cares to come (8). The metrics of Raleigh s poem are also in and of themselves a direct reply to Marlowe s. Raleigh uses the same iambic tetrameter that Marlowe uses, organizing the poem into four line stanzas composed of two rhyming couplets each. He achieves an oddly mocking tone with the meter because of the words involved. Although the words still flow because of the regular meter, they are decidedly less romantic and are juxtaposed with the meter. Examples of this are the harsh alliteration in complains of cares to come (8) or the rolling, soft sound that wayward winter s reckoning yields (10). Although the metrics are regular and fall soft on the ear, the subject matter is darker and uses the meter to make fun of Marlowe s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Geographical Location Of The Aegean World Essay Geographical location: The Aegean world is composed of three distinctive regions, all located at the Eastern edge of the Mediterranean: the island of Crete, the mainland of Greece, and the islands between the mainland and the coast of Anatolia. There are signs of earthquake damage at many Minoan sites and clear signs of both uplifting of the land and submersion of coastal sites due to tectonic processes all along the coasts. The Mycenaean citadel on Mainland Greece stands high above the Aegean Sea, surrounded by walls of stone so large they are called Cyclopean, as if only the mythic giant Cyclops could have moved them into place. Climate: Religion: The Minoans seem to have worshipped primarily goddesses, and their culture has been described as being based on a matriarchal religion. It was not dominated by fertility any more than any religion of the past or present has been, and it addressed gender identity, rites of passage, and death. It is reasonable to assume that both the organization and the rituals, even the mythology, resembled the religions of Near Eastern palatial civilizations.Although there is some evidence of male gods, depictions of Minoan goddesses vastly outnumber depictions of anything that could be considered a Minoan god. While some of these depictions of women may be images of worshippers and priestesses officiating at religious ceremonies, as opposed to deities, several goddesses appear to be portrayed. It seems that today, everyone has to be careful of what they say and do so as to avoid offending someone. While everyone is busy worrying about extinguishing sexism towards women which still is an issue that needs to be taken care of, who is concerned with sexism towards men? Sexism is just as much of an issue to men as it is to women. Many people believe that men have advantages over women when comes to a topic such as occupation. (165). By blaming men for every repression women have suffered over the years, Stanton is completely contradicting her argument by being sexist toward men. In a more modern example, a 2004 study by Peter Glick and Robin Wells, both of the Department of Psychology at Lawrence University, involving sixteen nations showed hostile attitudes toward men. ? Stereotype measures indicated that men were viewed as having?more powerful traits than women. The authors argue that hostile?attitudes toward men reflect and support gender inequality by characterizing men as being designed for dominance.? • 9. Examples Of Discrimination In To Kill A Mockingbird The United States, for hundreds of years, was what the majority of the world looked at as the prime example of racism and discrimination. A pitiful example of how humans can treat each other under the right conditions. The lynching, torture and outright cold blooded murder of African Americans in the USA. This behaviour was evident (mostly within the South) after the influential Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 onward, up until the Civil Rights movements which managed to squash much of the institutional discrimination. One could see a manifestation of this in 1960, with Harper Lee releasing the classic racial commentary To Kill a Mockingbird , she managed to illuminate many injustices faced by the Black communities in the deep South scrutinising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The injustices served to the Black community were fought, often lost, but nevertheless fought. The African Americans of the South were being stripped of their right to a fair and just trial to degrade African Americans as a people. We see this in the many trials which unjustly convicted innocent African Americans, To Kill a Mockingbird does a great job at illustrating this, Harper Lee uses Tom Robinson along with a clearly obvious court case (in favour of Tom) to clearly show the extreme bias within the courts, as Tom does not receive the respect, or consideration of the White jurors or prosecutor (with Tom, in turn, being sentenced to death when he is clearly innocent). Harper wanted to show that, while Blacks were being given their constitutional right to a fair trial, these trials, were far from fair, they were a despicable combination of Kangaroo Court and Show Trialing and the book helped bring this fact to light for many northern readers whom may not come across such information otherwise. But there were many triumphs as well, the court case known as Brown v. Board of Education , one of the most influential cases in all of civil rights history. It proved that Blacks are still resilient to the discrimination within their society and that change, especially in regards to education (one of the most important parts of one s life). Brown v. Board of Education led to the end of segregated schools in the U.S., ruling them to be unconstitutional, overriding the ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson (that being, separate but equal, which ended up as an Orwellian more equal than others scenario). This ruling meant that children of all races would be allowed to enjoy the fruits of Western education, it empowered the next generation of African Americans, not simply in a civil mentality way, but in a literal ... • 10. Society s Pokemon Impact On Children And Society Nintendo s Pokemon franchise is a rare beast in a field of short lived children s cultures. The series, which began in the realm of handheld video games, quickly developed into one of the longest running anime television series, an ongoing series of manga volumes, feature films, music and an ever expanding realm of merchandise (McCormick, 2000). The success of Pokemon is partly attributed to its ability to target a younger demographic almost exclusively. Parents in the nineties would rush out to pick up a Pikachu themed Gameboy or the latest Pokemon game for the N64 console for their kids (Buckingham, 2007). The impact of Pokemon on children as a whole is significant. After being exposed to the Clearys, John and Jeremy were told to leave by the William Cleary. • 12. Material Possessions In The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant Many people in today s society allow material possessions to control their life. They believe society is defined by brand name clothing, expensive cars, and excessive amounts of money. A person who is obsessed with materialistic things will never truly be satisfied or happy with life. Guy de Maupassant depicts a clear example of this modern day misfortune in the short story The Necklace. By looking at syntax, symbolism, and vocabulary used in The Necklace, we can see that Maupassant clearly illustrates the theme that a desire for material possessions has great power to destroy an individual, which most people do not recognize. Their conversation is short, and Madame Forester is taken back by the new, changed Madame Loisel. The syntax of this conversation is short. Because of its brevity, Maupassant suggests that Madame Loisel has greatly changed and longs for her simple life. When she lost the necklace and had to work for ten years to repay it, she took on more responsibility through labor. It took a toll on her body, and she yearned for her less complicated life. Later in the paragraph, on the top of page 28, the sentence structure starts to become more lengthy. Madame Loisel tells Madame Forestier that she bought a diamond necklace like the one she lost and Loisel and her husband have been working to repay the debt for ten years. She says, I brought you back another just like it. And for this we have been ten years paying. You can understand that it was not easy for us, who had nothing (28). In this passage, as the sentences get longer, it suggests that the length of time that Madame Loisel has been working to repay the money has been long. It has aged her greatly and her life now is much more complicated than before. The lengthy sentence structure supports the theme that material possessions have the power to destroy an individual. When considering costs, organizations need to know what it can afford to pay, while taking into account the prices the market allows, as well as allowing a profit. According to the article by Sorenson, Drummond and Burns, when using the bundling strategy, CMS does not consider the cost relative to alternative treatment options in its pricing (Sorenson, Drummond, and Burns, 2013). Instead, the payments are based on estimates of average costs. This particular pricing strategy includes add on payments based on the higher cost of the device. The high cost of the BrightMatter device will allow Henry Ford Hospital to receive add on payments, that equivalent fifty percent of the additional costs of using the new device in a case (Sorenson, Drummond, and Burns, 2013). They were at least a partial reflection of changes taking place in the relations between human beings change which had gone furthest in Britain and Holland. The central change through the turmoil of the 16th and 17th centuries was that exchange through the market played an increasingly dominant role in the way people obtained a livelihood. The church might burn heretics and the Habsburg armies sack urban centres opposed to their rule. But popes, emperors, princes and lords all required cash to finance their efforts and this meant that, even while trying to preserve the old order, they helped spread the market forces which would ultimately ... The Enlightenment was a recognition in the realm of ideas of this change taking place in reality. We are constantly learning about our culture even when we do not realize it. We learn about our culture through different medias, such as our parents, relatives, and peers. My earliest enculturation experience is when I was in kindergarten. I learned about culturally accepted behaviors for both genders and experienced double standard between male and female. My family and my peers were the most influential in this enculturation experience as they were the people I associated with during my early childhood. My early childhood experience of double standard has shaped my values and how I perceive my culture. Double standard varies culture by culture, in this paper, I will be explaining my double standard enculturation experience in my Chinese culture. In the Chinese culture, we are known to be a male dominant culture. Many traditional Chinese family values the males in the family more than the females because males are usually the head of the family. Males are given more freedom when they are growing up. Female children are often restricted to do many activities because of society expectation for females role and behavior. For instance, males tend to participate in masculine activities like Tae Kwon Do and football while females would participate in feminine activities such as sewing and dancing. Psychological Effects Of Epilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the nervous system and can develop in any person at any age, although it s more common for men than for women (Carlson, Dugan, Kirsch, Friedman. 2014). There is a variety of seizures a person with epilepsy may experience depending on which part(s) of the brain is affected by the electrical burst of activity in the brain and how much of the brain is affected (Petersen, Walker, Runge, Kessler, 1998). Seizures symptoms can range from undetectable to unconsciousness. There is a loss of consciousness then the body stiffens for about thirty to sixty seconds, then violent jerking and then the brain usually goes into a deep sleep to rest. The grand mal involves tonic, the stiffening of muscles, and clonic, the jerking movement of muscles. A person can just have tonic but in order to have clonic, tonic will come first. The petit mal is a generalized attack where the brain is overwhelmed with activity, but the motor system isn t affected (Cunliffe et al. 2014). The two main types of seizures (partial and generalized) can easily be confused depending on severity, but they are both treated differently medically. A person who has had two or more of any type of unprovoked seizure in his/her lifetime is considered to have epilepsy. Education, according Merriam Webster s dictionary, means the knowledge, skill and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university. Furthermore, Education in its simplest, teaches us to become more productive citizens while simultaneously opening magical doors for aspiring pupils to explore. As the late Martin Luther King aptly put it, Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. The key to having the best education system is constantly moving forward with legislation and initiatives. Subsequently, state legislatures and school districts pass initiative plans in hopes of promoting the progression of a child s education. However, the complexity and inefficiency of the total U.S. system can lead to bright children being left behind. The task of running the education behemoth is largely left up to the 50 states. All of the states, excluding Hawaii, have a common hierarchical structure (highest to lowest): state legislatures, state departments of education/boards of education, state commissioners, school districts/boards, and school superintendents. Traditionally, state control over education was vested in state boards of education. These boards formally have the power to decide everything from teacher certification to textbook selection. It becomes transparent that each of the journeys these heroes undertake are a lot like that of the lives of people today. The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest pieces of literature known to man. Written in 2700 B.C.E this epic poem centers in on an ancient king of Uruk in present day Iraq. When we are first introduced to Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, we see that he is a tyrant ruler which is one third human, two thirds divine and in endowed with immense strength. Instead of serving his people he suppresses them and engages in immoral behaviors fit for a king. The behaviors result in a backlash from his citizens and the nobles began to complain bitterly about these behaviors. The gods eventually intervene and in order to tame Gilgamesh s wild spirit they create his equal, Enkidu, whose purpose in this epic poem is to help guide Gilgamesh in becoming a better person and a better king for his people. Essay on Visual Acuity as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity Visual Acuity Measured as a Function of Retinal Eccentricity Visual acuity is a measure of an observer s ability to see fine spatial detail (Cavonius amp; Schumacher, 1966). There are a number of factors that affect visual acuity, such as illumination and contrast, and various ways to measure it (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). One way to measure visual acuity is through target detection which requires the perception of the orientation of a stimulus such as a Landolt C or a Snellen E (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). The participant in the current experiment was referred to have their acuity tested. The height and width of this optotype is designed to be five times the thickness of the stroke width and gap width, therefore the size of each critical detail is 1/5th of the overall height (Kalloniatis amp; Luu, 2005). Four stimulus sizes were used in the experiment as visual acuity was to be tested at four eccentricities (0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚). These four stimulus sizes were calculated using the approximate minimum angle of resolution (MAR) of each eccentricity obtained from Millodot et al. s (1975) normal data. This value was then used to find the gap size and hence the stimulus size using a distance of 600cm. The reason for using the distance value of 600cm was because it is close to the threshold and therefore would be the starting point of stimulus presentation for each of the eccentricities. The formula used was: gap size = 600*tan(MAR˚) ˃˃ size = 5 (600*tan(MAR˚)) The stimulus sizes (and critical feature sizes) calculated and used for the eccentricities 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚ were 0.9cm (0.18cm), 2.2cm (0.44cm), 6.13cm (1.23cm) and 17.5cm (3.5cm) respectively. Procedure As already stated, it was decided by the experimenter to test visual acuity at the following eccentricities: 0˚, 20˚, 40˚ and 60˚. Measuring the MAR at each of these eccentricities would give a good indication of where the participant s visual acuity measure lies in comparison to normal data. Exact vertical and horizontal ... • 32. The Gaze On Women s Cinema Abigail Brill Long Proposal 24 February 2015 The Gaze on Women in Cinema Cinema has a very powerful influence on us, whether we are aware of it or not. Cinema tells us, in a way of reflection, how we are to act and respond as a society. For example, in movies women with body hair are portrayed as shamed, unhygienic, and usually rejects to sexual advances. I ve started to recognize these consistent stigmas, but this is just one example of what I believe makes the male gaze so successfully prevalent in American cinema. Starting in the 1970s, women have been portrayed in film through various misogynistic lenses: the male gaze, voyeurism, and sexual objectification; these lenses are still rampant today in modern American film. Apparently, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These films are not creative; they are mere replications of an era in film started as early as the 1960s. American film has been using the enticing appeal of women s bodies to subtlety promote aggressive voyeurism since films such as Hitchcock s Rear Window, and David Lynch s film Blue Velvet. Voyeurism and spectatorship are exemplified in Hitchcock s film Rear Window from 1954. The film is focused around the situation of the main character, Jeff, looking through his binoculars into a woman s apartment across from him. The film employs a powerful photographic lens with its use of cut shots that only show Jeff s optical perspective. Hitchcock uses a standard eyeline match pattern, cutting from a shot of Jeff looking to a shot of what he sees. Since there is no establishing shot that shows both Jeff and the opposite apartment, the Kuleshov effect operates here: our mind connects the two images. More specifically, the second shot represents Jeff s optical viewpoint, and this is filmed from a position on his end of the axis of action. The camera has not crossed a line. He constantly uses these words to indicate that these destructive weapons will not hinder his obsessive love for her. In the chorus, his obsession with the girl is made even more obvious because he proclaims that he would catch a grenade for her, throw his hands on a blade for her, jump in front of a train for her, and take a bullet straight through his brain. His eagerness to make such sacrifices is intentionally detailed in the chorus which, through repetition, places emphasis on these phrases. These phrases or hyperboles integrate to Mars ethos because they enhanced his character by disclosing his authentic commitment to sacrificing his entire life for the girl. In turn, the ethos of credibility convinces the audience to take his side. Mar s most vigorous appeal in this particular song is his emotional appeal, or pathos. Even in today s century woman keep having difficulties and differences with equality and rights. It is not surprising that those problems come from many centuries ago. The best ancient civilization to be a woman was Egypt. They treated women better than Roman Empire or Athens. That is why Egyptian woman became an example of female autonomy in society for other civilizations. Egyptians view women and family as a crucial fact for happiness and delight, they looked women as invidious with respect and not as objects like other civilizations. In the first place, comparing contemporary women of Rome, Greece (especially Mycenaean); Egyptian women live with a certain freedom, respect and free will, which put them in many ways as equal as men. Two countries that were dominating the Americas were Spain and Portugal. These countries were gaining much wealth and power from the New World, and it resulted in an economic boom in both empires. This encouraged other countries, like France and, especially, Britain to join in the competition. Britain joined the quest for land in the New World because they sought to expand their empire, and compete with the growing powers of Spain and Portugal. Britain quickly took the lead in the Western Hemisphere by conquering land from Natives along the eastern coast of North America. Soon, Britain was developing colonies all over the East Coast. Matav, being the Hungarian Telecommunications Powerhouse, had secured their foothold in most of the communications market in Hungary, including business services, residential services, Internet and Mobile. Their parent company Deutsche Telekom wanted them to remain an integrated telecommunications company. Do Matav s international expansion plans make sense? Why? Matav was taken over by a European Telecommunications giant. The line was clear. Since the domestic market was completely overwhelmed by Matav, the only logical place to expand further was another European company. Matav is already an integrated telecommunications powerhouse. There is no new market it can create or develop within its own country to sustain development for it. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This approach has great potential, but the influx of illegal immigrants will increase dramatically, and this would never pass in congress. Our government should go the route of the 1986 and 2007 approach. This approach includes not letting illegal immigrants have immediate amnesty, but it put all illegal immigrants in the U.S. at the time on a track to legalization (Bhagwati, Rivera Batiz, pg. 2). We need to do this with the current eleven million illegal immigrants and then strengthen our boarders to ensure we don t have as many illegal immigrants entering the country. • 46. Russell On Truth Bertrand Russell discussed certain problems he found with philosophy. Russell was concerned about how much did we really know. There is the stuff we know with our mind when we have a particular idea, and stuff we know through actually experiencing it which would justify it. But how do we know if it is real, or even there, for that matter? Russell says, For if we cannot be sure of the independent existence of object, we cannot be sure of the independent existence of other people s bodies, and therefore still less of other peoples minds, since we have no grounds for believing in their minds except such as are derived from observing their bodies (Russell, 47). Russell believed that all of our knowledge, both knowledge of things and knowledge of truths, rest upon acquaintance as its foundation. It is therefore important to consider what kinds of things there are which we have acquaintance (Russell, 57). You know stuff through acquaintance by directly experiencing it and you know stuff through description from hearing what other have told you from there direct experiences. William James on the other hand would have had different views than Russell in some aspects. James believed that you needed more than just an idea to make something true, it needed power. James believes that truth is dynamic rather than static. James feels truth happens when everything holds together, when what you believe actually fits in with other things you also believe. While at the same time, James believed something is false when it doesn t fit in with the systems of your beliefs. James said, The most violent revolutions in an individual s beliefs leave most of his old order standing. Time and space, cause and effect, nature and history, and one s biography remain untouched. New truth is always a go between, a smoother over of transitions. It marries old opinion to new fact so as ever to show a minimum of jolt, a maximum of continuity (James, 124).
