Changes over time in Marketing and Promotion - The purpose
1960s
 First use of moving images shown through videos and TV to promote
artist and allowing for the band to be heard on TV. The technological
development in this case is TVs within peoples households, allowing
people to watch TV any time they want thus being able to watch videos of
artists performing. The main purpose of this was to promote the songs
and sell records.
1970s
 The years where artists began to record specific videos to go with the
song, which had a higher artistic value than just a simplistic video of the
artist performing. The main technology that was involved in this change
was more portable recording equipment which made it much easier to
film videos in different ways. The main purpose for this was to sell records,
albums and cultivate the 'star' creating an image and a brand of the artist.
1980 - 90s
 Artists used advents of MTV to promote their products as this was the
most well known music channel of all time this encouraged cultivation of
image of the artist. Record companies expanded their products in higher
production values creating better media. Videos become events in
themselves eg ‘Thriller.’ The technology which made this possible was
mainly hard disk editing, digital, global TV satellite stations, home video
and DVD. The main purpose of this similar to previous years was to sell
records and albums, however also now sell new products such as the
video, DVDs and other commercial tie-ins.
2000s
 Continued expansion and experimentation of form. The rise of the auteur
directors (late 90s too). Music video continued to be as memorable as the
music, and was becoming just as important as the audio itself with awards
coming in such as the best music video, etc. This advance was due to the
falling cost of hardware, digital TV, the audiences capability to become the
user with the use of cheap and inexpensive tools and uploading sites such
as YouTube. The purpose was as above in the previous years, but now
with ease of access, repetition and archiving, for example a music video
you.

  • 1. Marketing and Promotion Changes over time in Marketing and Promotion - The purpose
  • 2. 1960s  First use of moving images shown through videos and TV to promote artist and allowing for the band to be heard on TV. The technological development in this case is TVs within peoples households, allowing people to watch TV any time they want thus being able to watch videos of artists performing. The main purpose of this was to promote the songs and sell records.
  • 3. 1970s  The years where artists began to record specific videos to go with the song, which had a higher artistic value than just a simplistic video of the artist performing. The main technology that was involved in this change was more portable recording equipment which made it much easier to film videos in different ways. The main purpose for this was to sell records, albums and cultivate the 'star' creating an image and a brand of the artist.
  • 4. 1980 - 90s  Artists used advents of MTV to promote their products as this was the most well known music channel of all time this encouraged cultivation of image of the artist. Record companies expanded their products in higher production values creating better media. Videos become events in themselves eg ‘Thriller.’ The technology which made this possible was mainly hard disk editing, digital, global TV satellite stations, home video and DVD. The main purpose of this similar to previous years was to sell records and albums, however also now sell new products such as the video, DVDs and other commercial tie-ins.
  • 5. 2000s  Continued expansion and experimentation of form. The rise of the auteur directors (late 90s too). Music video continued to be as memorable as the music, and was becoming just as important as the audio itself with awards coming in such as the best music video, etc. This advance was due to the falling cost of hardware, digital TV, the audiences capability to become the user with the use of cheap and inexpensive tools and uploading sites such as YouTube. The purpose was as above in the previous years, but now with ease of access, repetition and archiving, for example a music video you.
