2. As part of my preparation in designing a music
magazine, I have done some research to find out
more about my demographic. In order to do this
research I created a questionnaire on
‘Questionpro.com’ and sent the link out to many
people, forums and social networking sites in order
to receive as many responses as possible.
My music magazine is mainly aimed at a slightly
older audience, especially women. The
questionnaire I created reflected questions which
relate to things in the media which are popular and
current today. Although the responses I received
were from a possibly younger audience to the
demographic that I am aiming for, it still gave me an
inside view on popular things in the media today.
The following slides will show data from the
responses I received from my questionnaire. In
addition, I have also done some research to find
some secondary data to support my findings.
3. As mentioned earlier, my target audience is a slightly older audience, especially women. The
magazine that I am creating is aimed at women over the ages of 18 and up to 35. I have planned to
use sophisticated colours so that my magazine appeals to my audience. In order to produce the
correct content in my music magazine, I am going to use the results and data from my primary and
secondary data for suitable content. To plan the ideal music magazine, I included a question in my
questionnaire which asked what the respondents’ parents do for a living, this allowed me to see
what their approximate income would be and therefore helped me with the decision of the price
that my magazine would be for my target audience.

The respondents from my
questionnaire were 68% women and
31% male, this is useful as most of the
results from my questionnaire will be
women and this will help me create
my own magazine more appealing
towards women.
The mode age is 16 in my
questionnaire, therefore most of the
data that I have received reflects the
preferences of 16 year old people but
may interest people of slightly older
ages too.

The questionnaire also asked
people what their social media
preferences were. Most people
answered with ‘Facebook’ being
the most popular social
networking site. This was
followed by ‘Twitter’. We can see
that 0% of the respondents said
that they use ‘MySpace’, which
shows that it is no longer a
popular social networking site
within our current generation.
16% of the people answered with
other social media, this included
social networking sites such as
‘Vine’, ‘Instagram’, Keek’
‘Tumblr’, ‘Blogger’ and ‘Email’.
6. The information that I have collected has allowed me to think of
a better plan for the final magazine that I am going to create.
The social media slide shows different social networking sites
which are popular and used by people. By knowing what the
most popular social networking sites are, it is easier for me to
promote my brand on those social networking sites. By doing
this, I will be able to reach more people in my demographic
quick and easily. Different platforms working together to
promote my brand is known as Synergy. I would need to create
a multi-platform approach towards my magazine brand in order
for it to become more noticed. This method would also allow
my magazine to take part in exchange within the media.
7. My following question asked my
respondents what their favourite
music artist or band was. By
asking this I was able to receive
information about popular music
from the music industry today.
However, because my age range
wasn’t very broad, the results may
differ if more people of different
ages answered with their
preferences.
Most, in fact all except one
person named male artists as
their favourite music artists and
bands. The images on the right
show some examples of the artists
and bands which were
mentioned.
8. In my questionnaire I also looked
into the music preferences that
people had. This question looked
more into the genres of music that
people are into rather than the artists.
In addition, I also looked into the
radio stations that were preferred by
these people and here is what I have
found out.

9. I have also included the question
‘What is your favourite animal?’
in my questionnaire. This seems
irrelevant to the topic that I have
based my questionnaire
on, however it does actually help
a lot to find out the answers to
this question. By finding out what
my respondents put as their
favourite animals, it shows me
what their personality is like. This
helps me to conduct my music
magazine.

12. After finding my own data, I did some research to find some
secondary data. The secondary data that I have found reflects
the issue of circulation falls in different magazines over the
past few years.
Magazines such as the
NME and the Q
Magazine have been
reported to have
circulation falls yearly
by 20%. Due to these
circulation falls, music
artists are also
suffering as well as the
magazine companies
themselves. This is
why the magazines
have moved their
content onto the
internet, their aim is to
attract a greater
audience and appeal to
more people.
13. Reasons why the NME
went down at this time
of year was because
the popularity of rock
music had
increased, thus
creating a fall in
circulation figures for
the NME. This
explains why other
magazines similar to
the NME decreased
and others increased.
14. In conclusion, the primary and secondary data has given me useful information on
different popular media sources. The statistics allow me to design my own music
magazine and they also make it easier to make a product which appeals to my
demographic.
