MAPEH 6 – Lecture 3 - CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Playing games makes us happy. They allow us to meet people who will eventually
become our friends. Playing games help us be pleased of our accomplishment at the
same time, develop our competence to accept defeat graciously as a form of
sportsmanship and develop camaraderie.
In addition, playing games make us physically and socially healthy.
Outcome of pandemic to Physical Education
Children like you love to play games especially outdoors. But, due to this
pandemic, video games have helped people get through a year of isolation and
loneliness. Video games especially have become a necessary tether for people to
friends they aren’t able to see as much, or at all, in person.
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Combined with phone calls, texts and chat tools, video games — from
battle royal “Minecraft” to the immersive world of “Roblox” — are giving
people a way to share fun, escapist experiences with each other when their
shared reality is darker.
They also act as a medium for discussing the harder topics, like
depression. Whether it’s shooting aliens together in near silence or opening
up about feelings of loss, playing games is serving a valuable purpose.
Growing up on screens: A year living online has changed the children
like you.
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Physical Education is a natural place to address public health
concerns including decreases in physical activities resulting from the
pandemic—especially in light of the current goal of PE to assist
students in acquiring “the knowledge, skills and confidence to
enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity”
The pandemic-initiated shift to online instruction provided
numerous challenges to PE teachers.

MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Games or educational games - are activities involving one or
more people, on the move with or without an object or
implement, playing under mutually agreed upon set of rules.
Games - can be used for practice/self-testing skills, cooperative play
or competitive play.
There are four basic types of games: invasion/territory, net/wall,
striking/fielding and target.
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
Game Learning Targets – Movement Skills, Strategies and Tactics
Students should first understand the purpose (e.g., offense and
defense) of the game and how it is played (i.e., rules of the game).
The rules should be simplified for beginners. The rules that we impose on
players will determine what and how they use movement skills and tactics.
During the games unit students learn movement skills (e.g., striking with a
bat, dribbling, catching, sliding while defending) and how to make tactical
decisions.
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
Students must also learn to understand the purpose of the skill and when to
use the skill within a game.
Skillful play within these games requires manipulative skills that come from
the following three categories:
1.Sending an object away – striking, volleying, kicking, or throwing it
2.Receiving/gaining possession of an object – by catching (trapping)
or collecting it (i.e., gaining control of and/or redirecting an object
coming along the ground
3.Traveling with and retaining the object – by carrying or propelling it
(e.g., dribbling).
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
Teaching Games for Understanding
There are many ways to teach students game skills.
Teaching games for understanding is a popular method. This approach
includes:
 introducing students to: a type of game (e.g., invasion, net/wall,
fielding or target)
 tactical awareness (e.g., learn tactics associated with each game
type)
 decision making (i.e., recognize situations in which tactics can be
applied)
 skill execution (e.g., learn ways to perform skill appropriately
within each game type).
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
Strategies and tactics are skills themselves.
Strategy - is an overall game plan and the sum of all tactics used.
Tactics - are decisions about what actions to take in response to problems
that arise during a game.
Students must understand the tactics and strategies appropriate to each
game in order to be successful.
Students must have control over their bodies and over an object before they
can apply the strategies and tactics successfully to a game.
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
Target games – practice the skills of aiming or hitting a target, avoiding
another player called “it” and dodging.
- are activities in which players send an object toward a
target while avoiding any obstacles. By playing these games,
participants will learn the key skills and strategies

Lesson 3 – Target Games
Luksong Tinik - Using Our Limbs as “Props”
- used only our arms and legs to execute this activity. We called this game
Luksong Tinik. According to our old folks, this activity originated from
Cabanatuan City, in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines.
Luksong Tinik - literally means “jumping over thorns” in English. It’s a
group game of two teams. Each team is composed of an equal
number of players. The players choose their respective nanay
(mother). While the rest of the team members call themselves
anak (children).
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Lesson 3 – Target Games
The Mechanics of Luksong Tinik
The objective of the game is for all players in a team to jump over the height
of the piled hands of the opposing team.
A player must avoid hitting the piled hands with any part of his body
or clothing. The two mothers are expected to be high jumpers. The first to jump is
decided by the mothers by tossing a slipper. The mother whose team wins the
toss will have the first jump. The other team serves as the tayâ (on base) and
forms the tinik (thorns) with their feet and hands.
Two players on the base sit facing each other, putting a foot forward and
touching the other player’s foot.
Then, each member of the other team starts jumping over the feet.

Consideration for safety precautions in playing target games
1. Stretching – it should be done before the activity to avoid injury or
muscle strain
2. Attire – must wear the proper attire for you to feel comfortable
3. Equipment – must be checked if they are free from wear and are still safe
to use
4. Weather –should be properly monitored and prepare the games based on
the forecast; if raining indoor games are recommended
5. Health conditions – must have a clearance from a doctor or from the
parents before doing the strenuous activity
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Outcome of playing target games:
•Develop locomotor skills with a variety of activities and drills
•Development of movement skills, movement strategies and movement
concepts
•Develop fair play, leadership, teamwork and communication skills
through team sport activities
•Develops accuracy and control through engaging target game
•Unique and engaging target games that allows students of all abilities to
participate
•Increase physical literacy to promote life-long, healthy active living
•Meet the fundamental principles in health and physical education
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Different skills that can be developed and involved in playing target
games:
1. Coordination – hitting the target or goal using the different body parts
together smoothly and efficiently.
2. Agility – moving and changing the body’s position easily and quickly to
hit the target against the defenders
3. Endurance – resisting fatigue and exhaustion during the game to
continue playing and eventually win the game.
4. Reaction time – responding quickly to hit a target or block the
opponents’ blow to win the game
5. Flexibility – bending and moving different body parts effortless,
smoothly and without breaking to make a goal or score
MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES
Different skills that can be developed
and involved in playing target games:
6. Balance – supporting the body when moving
and jumping in the air and be able to land on both
feet.
7. Speed – moving quickly to run past against the
defenders and make a goal or hit a target
8. Strength – using the energy and increasing
the force applied to throw an object to make a
score
9. Power – combining the strength and speed at the
same time to overcome the defenders and hit the
target

MAPEH 6 - Second Quarter Lecture 3 - Physical Education (1).pptx

  • 1. MAPEH 6 – Lecture 3 - CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Playing games makes us happy. They allow us to meet people who will eventually become our friends. Playing games help us be pleased of our accomplishment at the same time, develop our competence to accept defeat graciously as a form of sportsmanship and develop camaraderie. In addition, playing games make us physically and socially healthy. Outcome of pandemic to Physical Education Children like you love to play games especially outdoors. But, due to this pandemic, video games have helped people get through a year of isolation and loneliness. Video games especially have become a necessary tether for people to friends they aren’t able to see as much, or at all, in person.
  • 2. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Combined with phone calls, texts and chat tools, video games — from battle royal “Minecraft” to the immersive world of “Roblox” — are giving people a way to share fun, escapist experiences with each other when their shared reality is darker. They also act as a medium for discussing the harder topics, like depression. Whether it’s shooting aliens together in near silence or opening up about feelings of loss, playing games is serving a valuable purpose. Growing up on screens: A year living online has changed the children like you.
  • 3. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Physical Education is a natural place to address public health concerns including decreases in physical activities resulting from the pandemic—especially in light of the current goal of PE to assist students in acquiring “the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity” The pandemic-initiated shift to online instruction provided numerous challenges to PE teachers.

  • 5. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Games or educational games - are activities involving one or more people, on the move with or without an object or implement, playing under mutually agreed upon set of rules. Games - can be used for practice/self-testing skills, cooperative play or competitive play. There are four basic types of games: invasion/territory, net/wall, striking/fielding and target.
  • 6. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Lesson 3 – Target Games Game Learning Targets – Movement Skills, Strategies and Tactics Students should first understand the purpose (e.g., offense and defense) of the game and how it is played (i.e., rules of the game). The rules should be simplified for beginners. The rules that we impose on players will determine what and how they use movement skills and tactics. During the games unit students learn movement skills (e.g., striking with a bat, dribbling, catching, sliding while defending) and how to make tactical decisions.
  • 7. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Lesson 3 – Target Games Students must also learn to understand the purpose of the skill and when to use the skill within a game. Skillful play within these games requires manipulative skills that come from the following three categories: 1.Sending an object away – striking, volleying, kicking, or throwing it 2.Receiving/gaining possession of an object – by catching (trapping) or collecting it (i.e., gaining control of and/or redirecting an object coming along the ground 3.Traveling with and retaining the object – by carrying or propelling it (e.g., dribbling).
  • 8. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Lesson 3 – Target Games Teaching Games for Understanding There are many ways to teach students game skills. Teaching games for understanding is a popular method. This approach includes:  introducing students to: a type of game (e.g., invasion, net/wall, fielding or target)  tactical awareness (e.g., learn tactics associated with each game type)  decision making (i.e., recognize situations in which tactics can be applied)  skill execution (e.g., learn ways to perform skill appropriately within each game type).
  • 9. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Lesson 3 – Target Games Strategies and tactics are skills themselves. Strategy - is an overall game plan and the sum of all tactics used. Tactics - are decisions about what actions to take in response to problems that arise during a game. Students must understand the tactics and strategies appropriate to each game in order to be successful. Students must have control over their bodies and over an object before they can apply the strategies and tactics successfully to a game.

We called this game Luksong Tinik. According to our old folks, this activity originated from Cabanatuan City, in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Luksong Tinik - literally means “jumping over thorns” in English. It’s a group game of two teams. Each team is composed of an equal number of players. The players choose their respective nanay (mother). While the rest of the team members call themselves anak (children).
  • 14. MAPEH 6 – CHAPTER 2 – FILIPINO GAMES Lesson 3 – Target Games The Mechanics of Luksong Tinik The objective of the game is for all players in a team to jump over the height of the piled hands of the opposing team. A player must avoid hitting the piled hands with any part of his body or clothing. The two mothers are expected to be high jumpers. The first to jump is decided by the mothers by tossing a slipper. The mother whose team wins the toss will have the first jump. The other team serves as the tayâ (on base) and forms the tinik (thorns) with their feet and hands. Two players on the base sit facing each other, putting a foot forward and touching the other player’s foot. Then, each member of the other team starts jumping over the feet.
