Manufacturing Engineer Internship
Creating a safer and more efficient work environment

Introduction
Here at Mitsubishi Power I have done a number of things. I have worked with many different
engineers, machinists, and operators on various projects to help the company run more efficiently. In
these upcoming slides, I will be showing you some of the work I completed during my internship.

This fence is holding crane bridals that do not belong
here and there are steel risers on the ground that
could cause a potential injury
In this photo. you can see the wooden flipping board
that gets in the way of machinists daily.

VTL 6S Project
The VTL in Bay 5 was not the ideal work
area. There were items there that have
not been touched in months. Tools and
inserts were being misplaced. Also, many
machinists found it difficult to work in this
area.
The cart seen here is holding random tool inserts in
the red boxes. Not knowing where the inserts are
makes a machinists job difficult and slows down
production.

that are no longer needed or can be used
After moving around trash and items we realized that
there was no real need for this fence it was just in the
way.
The rack on the left is holding items that are
needed elsewhere.

VTL 6S Project (Cleaning Process)
● These are a few pictures taken
during the cleaning process.
● Many broken tools were tossed out.
● Other items were relocated for a
cleaner look.

Labels were placed on these trays to specify the
type of insert that goes in it.
We are currently labeling tools with marker but we are
looking into something that will last longer

VTL 6S Project (Improvements)
After cleaning out the unused
materials, we decided to label areas
for tool numbers and inserts, remove
the flipping board and yellow fence,
and set a spot for our steel items.
These are the steel parts that we have set aside for
various jobs. These include clamps, rods, and risers.
Here is a picture at the back of the VTL with the fence
gone.

6S at the VTL is an ongoing
process. We are always considering
new ways to turn the VTL into an
ideal work environment.
Earlier at the VTL we were using white marker to
label tool slots, but we felt like we could have a
better system for tool numbering.
In the photo above you can see we that we
labeled the tool numbers using tool tags. These
are numbered 1-80
Here is a photo of me drilling holes for the tags.

We wanted to see how a touch
screen computer would do being on
the floor.
After we received our computer, we
designed a steel enclosure for the
computer in SolidWorks.
We had the steel water jetted then
welded to form the enclosure.

goes in.

Here is a picture of our touch screen computer inside the
enclosure on the manufacturing floor.
This photo highlights the ability of the mount we
purchased for this computer. It has full motion
meaning it can go in any direction.
Here is a side view of the enclosure. We added
a touch pen so machinists would not have to put
their hands on the screen. We also hooked the
inside to a power outlet and established an
internet connection.

tools, and work instructions all in one

The purpose of the surface gauge is
to measure the smoothness of a part
across the machined surface.
The problem was our surface gauge
did not have a housing that could be
used to hold it and the rod that guides
it together.
These are the pictures taken before anything was done. The tape around the
gauge and the rod worked fine but once you wrap the tape around it would be
a real hassle to take off the gauge and reattach it.

This is the 3D housing we came up
with to give the gauge a nice snug fit
that can still be removed. It was
made with set screw holes to hold
the rod or gauge in place (if needed)
and it has a lip in the front so snap
in the gauge.
Here is a technical drawing snippet from what some of the engineers and I
came up with in SolidWorks

After we came up with a good
design that would work, we had the
housing 3D printed.
Here is the 3D model we now use to hold
the surface gauge.

Seal Fins are very fragile and they are
damaged a lot in the shop. This comes
from people accidentally dropping a tool
on them or the fin hitting the ground, could
be from a crane or forklift accident.
These parts a take a while to machine
and any damage would mean a loss in
profit, so we decided to find something
that would be inexpensive and protect
them.
The solution for this problem was rubber
trim.

This project came about because
the jacks for discs we were
machining were too short, so we
designed an adapter that would give
it the height needed to work with the
TMK discs.
The adapter piece was drilled and
tapped so it can also be removed
and work with shorter parts.
Here is a picture of the Disc Jack is used on a
TMK disc with the adapter attached you can
see where the adapter ends and the disc jack
starts.
In this photo, we are positioning a
handle we purchased on the adapter
to figure out where we should have it
welded.

This was the first model I was asked
to make for one of the design
engineers.
He sent me a picture of the beam on
the right then I took measurements
and created a 2D drawing and 3D
model of it in SolidWorks for him.
This picture is of the beam that needed to
be designed in SolidWorks.

Tool sheets are 3D models of tools
used in machines and by machinists.
They contain the tool number, the type
of holder used, the specific tool used in
the holder, and the insert used on each
specific tool.
They also contain the tools minimum
and maximum number that should be
stored in the tool crib and their US Tool
numbers.

Work instructions were created for
machinist to follow in order to
complete a job.
These instructions contain
information for properly machining,
lifting, or flipping a part.

I have worked with many different engineers, machinists, and operators on various projects to help the company run more efficiently. In these upcoming slides, I will be showing you some of the work I completed during my internship.

This fence is holding crane bridals that do not belong here and there are steel risers on the ground that could cause a potential injury In this photo. you can see the wooden flipping board that gets in the way of machinists daily. 3 VTL 6S Project The VTL in Bay 5 was not the ideal work area. There were items there that have not been touched in months. Tools and inserts were being misplaced. Also, many machinists found it difficult to work in this area. The cart seen here is holding random tool inserts in the red boxes. Not knowing where the inserts are makes a machinists job difficult and slows down production.

The pallet and cart seen here are both holding items that are no longer needed or can be used After moving around trash and items we realized that there was no real need for this fence it was just in the way. The rack on the left is holding items that are needed elsewhere. 4 VTL 6S Project (Cleaning Process) ● These are a few pictures taken during the cleaning process. ● Many broken tools were tossed out. ● Other items were relocated for a cleaner look.

We are currently labeling tools with marker but we are looking into something that will last longer 5 VTL 6S Project (Improvements) After cleaning out the unused materials, we decided to label areas for tool numbers and inserts, remove the flipping board and yellow fence, and set a spot for our steel items. These are the steel parts that we have set aside for various jobs. These include clamps, rods, and risers. Here is a picture at the back of the VTL with the fence gone.

We are always considering new ways to turn the VTL into an ideal work environment. Earlier at the VTL we were using white marker to label tool slots, but we felt like we could have a better system for tool numbering. In the photo above you can see we that we labeled the tool numbers using tool tags. These are numbered 1-80 Here is a photo of me drilling holes for the tags. 6 VTL 6S Project (Tool Tags)

After we received our computer, we designed a steel enclosure for the computer in SolidWorks. We had the steel water jetted then welded to form the enclosure. Here is a photo of our touch screen computer 7 Touch Screen Computer Project This pictures shows the assembled SolidWorks enclosure that the computer goes in.
  • 8. © 2019 Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Here is a picture of our touch screen computer inside the enclosure on the manufacturing floor. This photo highlights the ability of the mount we purchased for this computer. It has full motion meaning it can go in any direction. Here is a side view of the enclosure. We added a touch pen so machinists would not have to put their hands on the screen. We also hooked the inside to a power outlet and established an internet connection. 8 Touch Screen Computer Project (Advantages) ● Problems with programs seen by machinists can be resolved from the desk ● Machinists longer have to keep up with loose paper ● The computer can hold programs, tools, and work instructions all in one spot
  • 9. © 2019 Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The purpose of the surface gauge is to measure the smoothness of a part across the machined surface. The problem was our surface gauge did not have a housing that could be used to hold it and the rod that guides it together. These are the pictures taken before anything was done. The tape around the gauge and the rod worked fine but once you wrap the tape around it would be a real hassle to take off the gauge and reattach it. 9 Surface Gauge Project
  • 10. © 2019 Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. All Rights Reserved. This is the 3D housing we came up with to give the gauge a nice snug fit that can still be removed. It was made with set screw holes to hold the rod or gauge in place (if needed) and it has a lip in the front so snap in the gauge. Here is a technical drawing snippet from what some of the engineers and I came up with in SolidWorks 10 Surface Gauge Project (SolidWorks)

Here is the 3D model we now use to hold the surface gauge. 11 Surface Gauge Project (3D Printed Model) This is what our gauge looks like inside the housing.
  • 12. © 2019 Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Seal Fins are very fragile and they are damaged a lot in the shop. This comes from people accidentally dropping a tool on them or the fin hitting the ground, could be from a crane or forklift accident. These parts a take a while to machine and any damage would mean a loss in profit, so we decided to find something that would be inexpensive and protect them. The solution for this problem was rubber trim. Disc without trim to protect the seal. 12 Seal Fin Trim Project Trim around the seal fin.

This project came about because the jacks for discs we were machining were too short, so we designed an adapter that would give it the height needed to work with the TMK discs. The adapter piece was drilled and tapped so it can also be removed and work with shorter parts. Here is a picture of the Disc Jack is used on a TMK disc with the adapter attached you can see where the adapter ends and the disc jack starts. In this photo, we are positioning a handle we purchased on the adapter to figure out where we should have it welded. 13 TMK Disc Jack Adapter Project

He sent me a picture of the beam on the right then I took measurements and created a 2D drawing and 3D model of it in SolidWorks for him. This picture is of the beam that needed to be designed in SolidWorks. 14 Bay 3 Beam Modeling This is an assembly of the Beam created in SolidWorks.

They contain the tool number, the type of holder used, the specific tool used in the holder, and the insert used on each specific tool. They also contain the tools minimum and maximum number that should be stored in the tool crib and their US Tool numbers. 15 Tool Sheets Here is the an example of a tool sheet that was created based off of a tool used in Bay 3 Here is “Tool 91” at the HBM in Bay 3

These instructions contain information for properly machining, lifting, or flipping a part. 16 Work Instructions This is a work instruction that I made after talking with some machinists about how they flipped a Disc Adapter.
