Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear all,
How the year is flying by and we have reached that time of year I love.

Not too hot and not too cold.
To see the Autumn colours in the leaves; so beautiful. If all the trees were
conifers things wouldn't be as colourful. God's creation in all it's variety is just
amazing, His imagination and diversity, no person could match.
People also are a huge variety, not just race, creed and colour but likes and
dislikes, sizes and shapes. Each face different, quite mind blowing. God is
amazing in His handiwork. Let us enjoy God's immense creation, enjoying the
differences that make life more interesting. Let us praise our Almighty God,
and give thanks.
If you've not joined us for a Sunday service recently, then do come and join
us, we'd love to welcome you, at either the morning or the evening.
May God bless us, each and everyone of us.
With Christian love
Mavis

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
By the time you read this I hope to have found a little wall space to pin up an
article by Melanie Reid, which you might like to have a look at. It is headed
β€œSPINAL COLUMN” because she is tetraplegic following an accident. She is
also a journalist with a real gift for vivid writing and her weekly columns
describe her life as it now is.
We hear regularly about her carer, her husband Dave, and in this particular
column she concentrates on Dave and by extension on carers in general -
β€œthe invisible army” as she calls them - the family, friends and neighbours
who somehow cope, often struggling with tasks that do not come naturally.
The picture of Dave trying to put her socks on is a reminder of the people we
are supporting this year; and how, by helping them to keep going, we are
also supporting the people that they care for. And there is still plenty to be
done.
The stewards’ rota is not full yet; Jean has her own rota for the refreshments;
and I will need help on Monday 28th November (exact time to be confirmed)
with tree preparation, and during the festival at various times for furniture
moving. AND of course I need you and your friends to turn out in force and
encourage all the wonderful performers, from both inside and outside HFC,
who are looking forward to being with us. And one last thing – if you buy
your own tree from Layhams Farm shop and present the voucher (which is
printed on page 13) they will give Β£5 to our charity.
Thank you so much - Christine

Women's Contact Coffee Morning
Due to the small number of people attending our monthly coffee
mornings we have decided to stop holding them. They were
started to raise money for crisis events happening in the world
and over the years we have been able to send donations to many
countries where help was needed.
Thank you to all those people who supported our coffee mornings we have
probably collected a few thousand pounds during the years we have held
them.
Barbara,
Written on behalf of The Contact Group
The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
The stall will be held on the 13th and 27th of November.
Do pop by and check what we have for sale. There are some appetising
snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines.
Please continue to support your stall.
Richard & Barbara.

Editor's Notes
Dear reader, here is another extract from β€œA Few Picked Gems.”
Richard Brown
----------------------------------------------------
β€œFrom the introduction .... to draw attention to John Oxenham’s Poem
β€œPeace" .... changed by the Author's permission, into a prayer.
β€œIn my humble opinion this is the Prayer for the Peace of the World, and if the
peoples of all nations would so pray, and would breathe the spirit of it, War
might become a thing of the past amongst all civilised peoples.”

(See Page 20)
β€œNearly two thousand years have passed since Christ came upon the earth,
with His message of Peace and Goodwill, and yet the Peace which springs
from goodwill and right understanding, we still so earnestly long for.
β€œPerhaps even through the present confusion we may cherish the hope that
we can see the dawning of a better day.”

HYMN
O GOD of Bethel! by whose hand
Thy people still are fed,
Who through this weary pilgrimage
Hast all our fathers led:
Our vows, our prayers, we now present
Before Thy throne of grace:
God of our fathers! be the God
Of their succeeding race.
Through each perplexing path of life
Our wandering footsteps guide;
Give us each day our daily bread,
And raiment fit provide.
Such blessings from Thy gracious hand
Our humble prayers implore;
And Thou shalt be our chosen God,
And portion evermore.
Sung at Hatch End Baptist Church
Nov 1939
This hymn was printed in a small leaflet for a service organised by my late
Aunt Marion.

Website of the month: -
They are responsible for Sand Sculptures, Ice Sculptures, Sand
Drawing, and Pumpkin Carving.
They also run workshops. Their website is well worth visiting, if
only for a visual feast of some of their projects.
β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-
We are concentrating on their The Fallen 9000 project.
Wording taken from the website follows: -
Peace Day and The Fallen Project
Andy Moss and (Jamie Wardley) from Sand In
Your Eye developed the idea of the Fallen
Project together to mark Peace Day. The
objective was to make a visual representation of
9000 people drawn in the sand which equates
the number of Civilians, Germans Forces and
Allies that died during the D-day landings, 6th
June during WWII as an example of what
happens in the absence of peace.
….
On the day we had
60-70 confirmed
volunteers that had
travelled from around
the world to help.
We knew that this
was not enough to
complete the project
in the 4.5 hours that
we had so at 3pm
when we were about
to begin we were
overwhelmed by the
hundreds of people
that turned up to
help. …. The message of the Fallen is now travelling the globe, those people
that lost their lives are no longer with us but on Peace Day 21st September
2013 they spoke.
Thank you to all those people who helped give them their voice.

Churches Together In Hayes
The CTIH quiz night on Saturday 22nd October was very well supported by the 4
churches as well as other church friends in the area.
The proceeds from the evening were donated to the
Queen Elizabeth Foundation for disabled people.
The amount raised was Β£511.00 in aid of the QEF
Bugzi appeal.
A Bugzi is a powered indoor wheelchair for children
aged one to six and offers a unique opportunity for
pre-school children with disabilities to experience
independent mobility, often for the first time in their
lives.
The money will either be put towards the
manufacture of a Bugzi, which costs Β£5,000 or be
used in the QEF loan scheme. The scheme enables
families who could not afford to buy a Bugzi to give
their child the independence they crave.
This little gem was sent to me by John Curry in 2013: -
GA Richard. I thought this might be included.

High Flight
----- *** ----
"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, β€” and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of β€” wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew β€”
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
– Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

By John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941).
His posthumous fame rests mainly on his sonnet High Flight, which he
started on 18 August 1941, just a few months before his death in an air
collision over Lincolnshire.
This poem is committed to memory by airmen training to join the USAF.

PEACE
Give Peace in our time, O Lord,
To all the peoples β€” Peace!
Peace surely based upon Thy Will
And built in righteousness.
Thy power alone can break
The fetters that enchain
The sorely stricken soul of life
And make it live again.
Too long mistrust and fear
Have held our souls in thrall;
Sweep through the earth, keen breath of heaven.
And sound a nobler call!
Come, as thou didst of old,
In love so great, that men
Shall cast aside all other gods,
And turn to Thee again!
O help us Lord to learn
The truth all time has taught,β€”
That without Thee as architect,
Our building comes to naught.
Lord, help us, and inspire
Our hearts and lives, that we
May build with all Thy Wondrous gifts,
A Kingdom meet for Thee!
Give Peace in our time, O Lord,
To all the peoples β€” Peace!
Peace that shall build a glad new world,
And make for life’s increase.
O Living Christ, who still
Dost all our burdens share,
Come now and dwell within the hearts
Of all men everywhere!
We ask these things, O Heavenly
Father: in the name of the Prince
of Peace Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Final Thought
More Holiness Give Me
More holiness give me, more strivings within.
More patience in suffering, more sorrow for sin.
More faith in my Saviour, more sense of His care.
More joy in His service, more purpose in prayer.
More gratitude give me, more trust in the Lord.
More zeal for His glory, more hope in His Word.
More tears for His sorrows, more pain at His grief.
More meekness in trial, more praise for relief.
More purity give me, more strength to o’ercome,
More freedom from earth-stains, more longings for home.
More fit for the kingdom, more useful I’d be,
More blessèd and holy, more, Saviour, like Thee.
Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876

  • 3. Letter from the Church Secretary Dear all, How the year is flying by and we have reached that time of year I love.
Not too hot and not too cold. To see the Autumn colours in the leaves; so beautiful. If all the trees were conifers things wouldn't be as colourful. God's creation in all it's variety is just amazing, His imagination and diversity, no person could match. People also are a huge variety, not just race, creed and colour but likes and dislikes, sizes and shapes. Each face different, quite mind blowing. God is amazing in His handiwork. Let us enjoy God's immense creation, enjoying the differences that make life more interesting. Let us praise our Almighty God, and give thanks. If you've not joined us for a Sunday service recently, then do come and join us, we'd love to welcome you, at either the morning or the evening. May God bless us, each and everyone of us. With Christian love Mavis !1

Members who use this service are asked to phone Marion Swanborough on 8462 3981 by 9.00 am on any Tuesday when they are unable to come to the meetings. As always, we welcome all ladies to our meetings. Please come along for a pleasant afternoon. We do have a very varied programme with plenty to interest everyone.
Marion β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL By the time you read this I hope to have found a little wall space to pin up an article by Melanie Reid, which you might like to have a look at. It is headed β€œSPINAL COLUMN” because she is tetraplegic following an accident. She is also a journalist with a real gift for vivid writing and her weekly columns describe her life as it now is. We hear regularly about her carer, her husband Dave, and in this particular column she concentrates on Dave and by extension on carers in general - β€œthe invisible army” as she calls them - the family, friends and neighbours who somehow cope, often struggling with tasks that do not come naturally. The picture of Dave trying to put her socks on is a reminder of the people we are supporting this year; and how, by helping them to keep going, we are also supporting the people that they care for. And there is still plenty to be done. The stewards’ rota is not full yet; Jean has her own rota for the refreshments; and I will need help on Monday 28th November (exact time to be confirmed) with tree preparation, and during the festival at various times for furniture moving. AND of course I need you and your friends to turn out in force and encourage all the wonderful performers, from both inside and outside HFC, who are looking forward to being with us. And one last thing – if you buy your own tree from Layhams Farm shop and present the voucher (which is printed on page 13) they will give Β£5 to our charity. Thank you so much - Christine !5
  • 8. Women's Contact Coffee Morning Due to the small number of people attending our monthly coffee mornings we have decided to stop holding them. They were started to raise money for crisis events happening in the world and over the years we have been able to send donations to many countries where help was needed. Thank you to all those people who supported our coffee mornings we have probably collected a few thousand pounds during the years we have held them. Barbara, Written on behalf of The Contact Group The Fairtrade Sunday Stall We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The stall will be held on the 13th and 27th of November. Do pop by and check what we have for sale. There are some appetising snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines. Please continue to support your stall. Richard & Barbara. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” Editor's Notes Dear reader, here is another extract from β€œA Few Picked Gems.” Richard Brown ---------------------------------------------------- β€œFrom the introduction .... to draw attention to John Oxenham’s Poem β€œPeace" .... changed by the Author's permission, into a prayer. β€œIn my humble opinion this is the Prayer for the Peace of the World, and if the peoples of all nations would so pray, and would breathe the spirit of it, War might become a thing of the past amongst all civilised peoples.”
(See Page 20) β€œNearly two thousand years have passed since Christ came upon the earth, with His message of Peace and Goodwill, and yet the Peace which springs from goodwill and right understanding, we still so earnestly long for. β€œPerhaps even through the present confusion we may cherish the hope that we can see the dawning of a better day.” !6

  • 14. Found amongst Family Papers HYMN O GOD of Bethel! by whose hand Thy people still are fed, Who through this weary pilgrimage Hast all our fathers led: Our vows, our prayers, we now present Before Thy throne of grace: God of our fathers! be the God Of their succeeding race. Through each perplexing path of life Our wandering footsteps guide; Give us each day our daily bread, And raiment fit provide. Such blessings from Thy gracious hand Our humble prayers implore; And Thou shalt be our chosen God, And portion evermore. Sung at Hatch End Baptist Church Nov 1939 This hymn was printed in a small leaflet for a service organised by my late Aunt Marion. Their website is well worth visiting, if only for a visual feast of some of their projects. β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”- We are concentrating on their The Fallen 9000 project. Wording taken from the website follows: - Peace Day and The Fallen Project Andy Moss and (Jamie Wardley) from Sand In Your Eye developed the idea of the Fallen Project together to mark Peace Day. The objective was to make a visual representation of 9000 people drawn in the sand which equates the number of Civilians, Germans Forces and Allies that died during the D-day landings, 6th June during WWII as an example of what happens in the absence of peace. …. On the day we had 60-70 confirmed volunteers that had travelled from around the world to help. We knew that this was not enough to complete the project in the 4.5 hours that we had so at 3pm when we were about to begin we were overwhelmed by the hundreds of people that turned up to help. …. The message of the Fallen is now travelling the globe, those people that lost their lives are no longer with us but on Peace Day 21st September 2013 they spoke. Thank you to all those people who helped give them their voice. Contact details: - New enquiries: 0741 2992 336 Email: info@sandinyoureye.co.uk !14

The proceeds from the evening were donated to the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for disabled people. The amount raised was Β£511.00 in aid of the QEF Bugzi appeal. A Bugzi is a powered indoor wheelchair for children aged one to six and offers a unique opportunity for pre-school children with disabilities to experience independent mobility, often for the first time in their lives. The money will either be put towards the manufacture of a Bugzi, which costs Β£5,000 or be used in the QEF loan scheme. The scheme enables families who could not afford to buy a Bugzi to give their child the independence they crave.

I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, β€” and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of β€” wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air.... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew β€” And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
By John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941). His posthumous fame rests mainly on his sonnet High Flight, which he started on 18 August 1941, just a few months before his death in an air collision over Lincolnshire. This poem is committed to memory by airmen training to join the USAF.

  • 22. PEACE Give Peace in our time, O Lord, To all the peoples β€” Peace! Peace surely based upon Thy Will And built in righteousness. Thy power alone can break The fetters that enchain The sorely stricken soul of life And make it live again. Too long mistrust and fear Have held our souls in thrall; Sweep through the earth, keen breath of heaven. And sound a nobler call! Come, as thou didst of old, In love so great, that men Shall cast aside all other gods, And turn to Thee again! O help us Lord to learn The truth all time has taught,β€” That without Thee as architect, Our building comes to naught. Lord, help us, and inspire Our hearts and lives, that we May build with all Thy Wondrous gifts, A Kingdom meet for Thee! Give Peace in our time, O Lord, To all the peoples β€” Peace! Peace that shall build a glad new world, And make for life’s increase. O Living Christ, who still Dost all our burdens share, Come now and dwell within the hearts Of all men everywhere! We ask these things, O Heavenly Father: in the name of the Prince of Peace Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
