Deploying and managing container-based applications with OpenStack and Kubern...
Linux containers have recently taken the industry by storm, offering a lightweight, powerful, portable and upgradeable alternative to traditional app deployment on a host OS/VM.
Managing Docker containers on OpenStack VMs is possible today with Mirantis OpenStack, with the Murano Application Catalog radically simplifying the job of placing multiple application containers in an environment, installing apps in them from public resources such as Docker Hub, and deploying the environment on VMs for use. For managing containers at large scales, Mirantis and Google are now working jointly to enable Murano to configure and deploy Kubernetes — the Google-initiated open source project to build and refine cluster orchestration for containers on infrastructure.
In this presentation the core concepts of OpenStack, Docker and Kubernetes will be described, as well as demonstrated abilities to deploy containerized applications, managed by Kubernetes on above of OpenStack cloud.

OpenNebula Conf 2014 | Puppet and OpenNebula - David Lutterkort
Many facets of using an IaaS cloud like OpenNebula can be greatly
simplified by using a configuration management tool such as Puppet. This
includes the management of hosts as well as the management of cloud
resources such as virtual machines and networks. Of course, Puppet can also
play an important role in the management of the actual workload of virtual
machine instances. Besides using it in the traditional, purely agent-based
way, it is also possible to use Puppet during the building of machine
images. This serves two purposes: firstly, it speeds up the initial Puppet
run when an instance is launched off that image, sometimes quite
dramatically. Secondly, it supports operating immutable infrastructure
without losing Puppet’s benefits to organize and simplify the description
of the entire infrastructure.
This talk will show how Puppet can be used by adminsitrators to manage
OpenNebula hosts, and by users to manage their infrastructure as well as
how to use Puppet during image builds.

Jax2013 PaaS-Parade - Part 1: Cloud Foundry
Cloud Foundry is an open source Platform as a Service (PaaS) that was developed and published by VMware in 2011. It allows developers to build, deploy, and run applications on the cloud. Cloud Foundry is an open source Platform as a Service (PaaS) that was developed and published by VMware in 2011. It allows developers to build, deploy, and run applications on the cloud. Cloud Foundry uses buildpacks to define application environments and supports various programming languages, frameworks, and services. It provides tools for developers like vmc command line, Eclipse integration, and Maven/Gradle plugins. Scaling in Cloud Foundry can be done at the infrastructure level by the PaaS operator or at the application level by the app developer.

Gerrit + Jenkins = Continuous Delivery For Big Data
Gerrit and Jenkins are used together for continuous delivery of big data projects. The team uses Gerrit for code reviews and Jenkins for continuous integration. Code is developed using Git and topics, with Jenkins building every code change and automatically promoting releases if tests pass. Integration tests are run on ephemeral Hadoop clusters created using Mesos, Marathon, and Docker to provide resources. While this approach works, opportunities for improvement were noted around building multiple related components together and handling race conditions during topic submission and integration.
A new model for Docker image distribution
This document provides an overview of Docker Registry 2.0, which implements a new API (V2) for distributing Docker images. The key points are:
1) Registry API V1 had problems with performance, security, and implementation; API V2 addresses these with a content-addressable, cryptographically verifiable model.
2) API V2 treats image layers as content-addressable blobs identified by cryptographic digests, allowing for independent verification.
3) Manifests describe the components of an image in a single object, allowing layers to be fetched in parallel for better performance.

The British Library hosted a ‘SCAPE Information Day at the British Library’, on 14 July 2014. The information day introduced the EU-funded project SCAPE (Scalable Preservation Environments) and its tools and services to the participants. Some tools were presented and demonstrated in more detail (see the other presentations) and the day was closed with a presentation by Will Palmer, Carl Wilson and Peter May of some of the other outputs that SCAPE has delivered.
