Nutritional Knowledge and Practices of Pre-School Teachers in Homa Bay Countypaperpublications3
Abstract: The main objective of this study was to investigate nutrition relationship between pre-school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practice in Homa Bay County. The study investigated the following aspects of nutrition knowledge; balanced diet, source of nutrients, food preparation, food storage and preservation. The specific objectives were: to assess the nutritional knowledge and practices between pre-school teachers; Jerome Brunner’ (1978) theories on knowledge representation guided the study; his three modes on nutritional knowledge to the teachers and learners basically on cognitive development. The three models are enactive, iconic and symbolic. The study adopted a descriptive design to investigate the relationship between pre-school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practices. Questionnaire, interview schedule and observation checklists were used as instruments of data collection. Data analysis was done qualitatively and quantitatively methods. Findings showed that nutritional knowledge and practices among preschool teachers is very low in Homa Bay County. Most of the respondents knew about only three food groups type, a significant number of them were unable to categorise different food types in their respective groups. Proper nutrition was found to be positively correlated with preschool children academic performance. The study also established that the relationship between pre- school teachers’ nutritional knowledge and practices was not significant. The study recommends that strategies need to be put in place to improve nutritional knowledge and practices of preschool teachers in Homa Bay County and country at large, this will be through cooperation of Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and other policy makers in the education sector.
The document evaluates lunch practices in Seattle elementary schools. It finds that while schools had an average of 20 minutes of official lunch time, students only had 13 minutes on average to eat due to time spent waiting in line and traveling to the cafeteria. Students with longer lunch times ate more calories and nutrients. The document recommends increasing lunch time, scheduling recess before lunch, and educating stakeholders on the importance of adequate lunch time for student nutrition, health, and academic performance.

The document discusses the relationship between food security and primary school education. It makes four main points: 1) Universal primary education is essential for food security. 2) Food for education programs boost school participation and food security. 3) Educational quality has the greatest impact on food security, but even modest education leads to effects. 4) Increasing access to education and quality are interrelated and can be influenced by food for education programs. The document then examines how food for education can impact the 10 key factors of education reform by incentivizing demand, quality, and community involvement.

This document discusses the need for standards regarding packed lunches in UK schools. It notes that while school meals must meet nutritional standards, packed lunches brought from home are not regulated and often contain mostly unhealthy foods high in fat, sugar and salt. The document recommends that the UK government establish a non-mandatory framework for packed lunches to promote healthier options and address rising childhood obesity rates. It also suggests providing resources to help parents pack lunches that meet the nutritional standards.

This document outlines the vision and programs of FoodFight, an organization that provides food education in schools. It notes that 1/3 of US children are obese or overweight due to lack of nutrition education and marketing of unhealthy foods. FoodFight aims to educate students, teachers, and parents to make healthier choices through various classroom and community programs that have been shown to improve eating habits and increase understanding of food systems. The organization is led by experienced educators and health experts and seeks to empower stakeholders to advocate for better access to nutrition.
The school lunch program was implemented in 1946 by President Truman to monitor and enhance children's health by encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. The program requires that lunches contain no more than 30% calories from fat, 10% from saturated fat, and provide 1/3 of certain dietary requirements. Some schools have opted out of the program due to difficulties following requirements and higher costs, but over 101,000 schools participate serving over 5 billion lunches to 31 million students each year.

Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, and Dietary Intake of Women of Reproductive A...asclepiuspdfs
Forty percent (%) of Zambian children under age 5 were stunted in 2013. Stunting begins with a woman’s pre-pregnancy nutrition status and is often associated with poor dietary diversity, including low intake of animal-source foods (ASFs). This study assessed food attitudes, dietary intake of women of reproductive age (WRA), and costs of key nutrients in Bundabunda Ward, Zambia. A mixed-method approach was used, including participatory observation, focus-group discussions with WRA (nulliparous adolescents and pregnant, breastfeeding, and multiparous women), interviews with community health workers (CHWs), and nutritional analysis of WRA’s diets (n = 33). The study found WRA and CHWs considered nutrition to be important, but a lack of financial resources, inflexible complementary feeding advice, and competing priorities compromised their dietary quality. All WRA’s diets were high in maize and other plant-based foods, and relatively low in ASFs and wild foods. WRA were unlikely to meet their metabolic demands for some amino acids, namely, lysine and tryptophan. Mean iron intake in adolescents was inadequate and calcium intake across groups met less than 50% of requirements (recommended nutrient intake). However, mean intake of energy, protein, zinc, and vitamin A across all groups appeared adequate compared to the recommended intake for lifestage. Further efforts on community and national levels, including strengthening the teaching capacity of CHWs in nutrition; increasing the availability, accessibility, and utilization of ASFs; and further development of context-specific food-based guidelines, are necessary to ameliorate food security challenges that underpin the ongoing high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and stunting in Bundabunda Ward and similar contexts.
The document discusses reducing child malnutrition in India. It outlines several causes of malnutrition including lack of a nutritious diet, indigestive food, irregular eating, dirty environments, lack of sleep and exercise, negligence, diseases, and heavy work. It proposes solutions like expanding existing nutrition programs, improving targeting, strengthening implementation, increasing public investment, improving women's education, increasing food supplies, promoting healthful environments, and investing in agriculture. The goal is to make progress through multi-sector efforts to reduce malnutrition in India.
This document summarizes a paper presented at the 2020 STAR Conference in Kathmandu, Nepal on the topic of motivational role of free mid-day meals on learning in basic community schools in Western Nepal. The paper discusses how a lack of proper implementation and management of mid-day meal programs negatively impacted student attendance, participation, and achievement. Interviews with students, teachers, and administrators revealed support for mid-day meals but challenges with the financial burden on poor families, inadequate facilities, and inconsistent program delivery. The conclusion calls for improved implementation of mid-day meal commitments in Nepal's national budget to benefit students.
1) The study analyzed changes in meal patterns among Norwegian children from 2001 to 2008, looking specifically at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper consumption.
2) It found no significant changes in children's meal patterns over this time period, with over 90% reporting having breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper on the previous day for both 2001 and 2008.
3) Some factors were associated with skipping meals, including living in a one-parent family and having lower educated parents, which increased the likelihood of skipping breakfast and lunch.

Nutrition and Academic Achievement of Filipino Learners: A Literature Reviewijtsrd
Nutrition has always been significant in the lives of all. It refers to the needed amount of vitamins and minerals the body receives to allow proper functioning. Undernourished and malnutrition are no longer new issues in the Filipino learners. It has been reported to have a total of 1,836,793 undernourished pupils from kindergarten to Grade 6 pupils as reported by DepEd on FY 2019. On the latest news, the Programme for International Student Assessment PISA results showed that the Philippines ranked dead last in reading among 79 participating countries or economies, and ranked second to the last in both mathematics and science. The Philippines sees a strong relationship between the socio economic status of students and their school performance, according to the full report. With this, the researchers aimed to see if in the past researches, there was a reported significant association between nutrition and academic achievement of the students. Of the twenty reviewed studies, ten research articles were utilized. From these, six out of ten researches confirmed the association. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that students who were of proper nutrition were more likely to perform better in school as reported in their academic performance. Mariepet A. Women constitute of ½ of world’s population and do 2/3 of world’s work.
In return,
Women get 1/10th of world’s income and own 1/100th of world’s wealth.
-The United Nations
Women’s Right to Land has been major concern of the women’s movement in India for over three decades. Globally, women’s land rights are becoming an area of increasing urgency. In most societies, women have historically managed the unpaid care economy and fulfilled the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, family care, collection of fuel, fodder, water, kitchen gardening, poultry and animal husbandry and provided food and nutritional security. As women’s contribution to the economy and society at large remains unrecognised, largely underpaid and mostly unpaid, the need for women to be able to secure land and property has become even more critical.
Similar to the cross-cutting nature of women’s human rights issues, women’s land rights intersect with other problems such as discriminatory inheritance patterns, disinheritance thro’ wills, agriculture and development issues, use of forest-based resources, gender-based violence, the appropriation and privatization of communal and indigenous lands, as well as gendered control over economic resources and the right to work. The interdependence of women’s human rights highlights the importance of women being able to claim their rights to land, in order to lessen the threat of discrimination, different forms of violence, denial of political participation, and other violations of their economic rights.

Nutritional Status of School Age Children in Private Elementary Schools: Basi...IJAEMSJORNAL
Department of Education (DepEd) organizes nutritional programs to improve the health status of children in public schools. Likewise, the researcher believes that health awareness must be raised in private schools as well. This study aimed to affect the community to be aware and more knowledgeable about nutrition. Specifically, this study focused on the nutritional status of school age children in private elementary schools in Santa Rosa, Nueva Ecija. It sought to determine the profile of the learners, anthropometrics, clinical data and the knowledge of the learners as to dietary and the significant relationship between the profile of the learners and the nutritional status of the school aged children. With all the data gathered a meal management program was proposed. The study employed the quantitative description design. The study manifests that majority of the respondents were not yet aware of what they eat. In addition, age, greatly affects the respondent’s anthropometrics as to height. More so, age, number of siblings and family income, greatly affect the respondents’ anthropometrics as to weight. The researcher adopted the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipino program that was developed by the DOST- FNRI.
This document summarizes a study that evaluated the effects of a week-long cooking camp called "Fun with Food" on the self-efficacy of dietary behaviors and food preparation skills in children ages 8-13. Processed snack foods: Their vitamin and mineral composition and percentage c...Innspub Net
Proper nutrition is important as children grow, and snack time should be just as healthy and delicious as breakfast, lunch and dinner. The study aimed to evaluate the vitamin and mineral composition of four processed snack foods and to analyze the % RNI contributed by these foods to the daily needs of school children. Moreover, the researchers attempted to identify the most concentrated sources of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, vitamin B9, calcium, and iron among the snack items. Results showed that of the six vitamins evaluated, vitamin A is the only vitamin supplied in ADEQUATE amounts by the four snack items namely Jute-Malabar Nigthshade Pastillas, Banana Blossom Cookies, Malunggay Polvoron, Squash-Carrot Pastiyema. In terms of the minerals, calcium and iron, only Malunggay Polvoron met at least 20% of the RNI for these nutrients for both age groups 4-6 and 7-9 years old. All the four snack items supply at least 20% of the RNI for vitamin A and riboflavin for the two age groups. On the other hand, the snack item with the most dense nutrients is Malunggay Polvoron. Sensorial qualities to include quality characteristics, consumer acceptance as well as their packaging may be conducted. Furthermore, the development of other nutrient-dense snack items with emphasis on the incorporation of leafy and fiber-rich vegetables is encouraged.

A PROPOSAL ON
HEALTH PROMOTION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION PROGRAM ON SCHOOL HEALTH NUTRITION AMONG THE PRIMARY LEVEL STUDENTS OF POKHARA METROPOLITAN-30, KASKI
This document discusses the importance of adequate lunch time for students in schools. It summarizes findings from a study of lunch periods in Seattle schools. On average, official lunch times were 20.71 minutes but actual seated time for eating was only 12.69 minutes. Students wasted a high percentage of vegetables, fruit, and entrée foods due to the short lunch periods. Both kitchen managers and principals acknowledged that the 20-minute standard lunch period was not sufficient time for students to eat. The recommendations encourage schools to maximize lunch time through scheduling recess before lunch and ensuring students have enough time to travel from class to the cafeteria.
Food gardens have the potential to help address malnutrition in children aged 0-5 years in South Africa. While food gardens may improve access to micronutrients like vitamin A, it is unclear if they can provide sufficient nutrition on their own. For food gardens to be effective, they must be paired with nutrition education programs and focus on growing nutrient-dense crops. Larger, more structured programs in schools and early childhood centers may have better outcomes than small household gardens alone.

Abstract
This study seeks to evaluate the causes of malnutrition its extent and the effects it has on participation in learning
among primary school pupils. The crucial role nutrition plays for developmental, conductive and behavioral
outcomes in life’s early stages is often not well understood and appreciate acted upon by schools and parents.
Kirie division is among the divisions greatly affected by irregular rain and inadequate food supplies due to
drought. In this regards, it is necessary to evaluate the malnutrition effects on learning ability of children.
Malnutrition is a medical condition where one is weak or ill because he/she doesn’t eat enough, or the right kind
of food. Descriptive research design was adopted. The study covered 10 schools where class one pupils were
obtained from each school. Five teachers and 5 parents were selected from each school. The data was collected
by use of two questionnaires, one for the teacher and the other for the parent.an interview schedule was used for
the pupils. Data was analyzed by use of excel programme and presented in frequency tables, bar graphs and pie
charts. From the study, it was found that poor malnutrition had an effect on learning due to increased infections,
diminished cognitive ability and low school attendance rate. By improving on the feeding programme, the
learners can continue to attend school. Basic needs should also be provided for.
Keywords: Malnutrition, Attendance
Heading 1Background of the study
The nutrition quality of our diet affects our wellbeing but it has greater impact on children whose bodies and
minds are still growing. Nutritional deficiencies can seriously damage a child’s neural development, possibly
leading to lower IQ and learning deficiencies. Studies by neuroscientists have found that low-quality nutrition
during childhood can be detrimental to the development of cognitive capabilities, such as learning, problem
solving and memorizing. Early malnutrition can lead to deficiencies in vision, fine motor skills, language and
social skills as well as an array of chronic illness lasting well into adulthood. The crucial role nutrition in the
early stages of life is not well understood and therefore not given priority.
According to a study by the American school of health association, students who had consistently insufficient
protein intake scored lowered on achievement tests than their classmates who had adequate nutrition. Students
with chronic iron deficiency were more likely to suffer from attention deficit hyper activity disorder.
Malnourished children were found to be more prone to infections and illnesses, causing them to miss school and
lag behind in their education.
Pediatric and pediatric dieticians have long emphasized that giving children a healthy breakfast plays an
important role for their nutritional wellbeing. Without a boost at the beginning of the day, young brains cannot
function well. To do its work, the brain needs a sufficient supply of healthy fats, proteins, carbohydrates,
vitamins, minerals and water.

Problem statement
The crucial role nutrition plays for developmental, cognitive and behavioral outcomes in early stages is often not
well understood and appropriately acted upon by the school and parents. Kirie division is among the divisions
greatly affected by irregular rains and inadequate food supplies due to drought. In this regard, it was necessary to
evaluate the malnutrition effects on the attendance of learners in Kirie division Embu County.

Roughly 80% of Kenyans live in rural areas and makes out a living a farmers. Poor land quality and
chronic water shortages in parts of Kenya have put the country in a constant state of food insecurity,
(UNESCO 2005).

The ASAL, home to roughly 30% of the Kenyan population has suffered through the crippling social effects of
recently intensifying droughts and food shortages. Kenyans school aged population is among the groups most
negatively impacted. In many parts of the world, families urgently support to grow or buy a variety of foods for
their children to survive. To effectively fight and improve the childwell-being, nutritious food must be provided.
Galloway explains that when learners are not distracted by hunger and the extreme effects of malnutrition, they
will be able to concentrate better, understand new material and socialize with both teachers and peers, Galloway
(2009).
A laboratory study that involved healthy, well-nourished school aged children found a negative effect
of morning fasting on cognitive performance. A test of the speed and accuracy of response on problem solving
tasks given to children who did or did not eat breakfast found that skipping breakfast had an adverse effect on
their performance in tests, Pillotit (1991). Another study among fourth grade students found that those with least
protein intake in their diets had the lowest achievements scores, ASFSA, (1989).
Research Methodology
Research Design
This study adopted descriptive survey research designs where field studies were conducted between May to July
2013, data was gathered to enable the researcher make conclusions.
Target population
This comprised of pupils from the 84 primary schools, teachers and parents in Kirie Division, Embu County.
Sample and sampling procedure
A sample of 150 pupils, 50 teachers and 50 parents were obtained, 15 pupils were selected for the study from
every school using stratified sampling techniques, 5 teachers and 5 parents from every school were selected for
the study using random sample technique.
Research instruments
The researcher used questionnaires for pupils and interview schedules on parents and teachers for the purpose of
gathering data from the respondents. The questionnaires had both open and close ended questions.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made.
In order to improve learning participation and abilities among learners, in the area of study and in areas with
similar problem, better farming practices should be introduced in order to have better food production.
There should be the establishment of proper and organized schools feeding program me, so that all pupils in
primary and nursery schools are provided with the basic foods while in the school during all the school days.
Provision of education on nutritional health is of great essence for the community of the people living in kirie
division. Therefore there should be sensitization program me so that people can learn the necessity of proper
nutrition.
Training on better farming practices are also recommended so as to enable the parents to maximize on the
available rains especially through the use of draught resistant crops. This courts increase a harvest hence curbing
the problem of hunger, food shortage and malnutrition.
Education on the nutritional value of locally available foods is suggested in order to provide knowledge on the
foods that can be used to feed the community especially in arid and semiarid areas. This should help people to
avoid and present malnutrition problem.

The study showed that the most prevalent deficiency disease is scurvy which had a frequency of 9.kwarshiokor
was the next common disease with a frequency of 7 followed by anemia with a frequency of 4.It can be
concluded that the high frequency of scurvy in comparison to other diseases was due to the low crop harvest
rates in the area, may be due to inadequate fruits and vegetables which would help to prevent the disease.
