There are seven major continents separated by large bodies of water: Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica. Asia is the largest continent covering one third of the Earth's land area. Europe lies west of Asia and is much smaller. Africa is the second largest continent with the Equator running through the middle. North America is the third largest and connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama. South America has the longest mountain range and largest river, the Amazon. Australia is the smallest continent surrounded by water in the Southern Hemisphere. Antarctica is permanently covered in ice and has no permanent human settlements.
