THE AMAZON RIVER
     by: Emily
The Amazon River is the second largest river in the world. It
extends approximately 3,900 miles. Amazon is South
America’s most important river. The Amazon basin covers
more than 7 million km (2.7 million miles), or nearly 5% of
               the world’s total land area.
Thousands of tributaries join the Amazon River on its
path to the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon River is on
Brazil’s border. The Amazon River is the Chief River. It
carries more water than any other river.
They have lots of animals like monkeys, pink
dolphins, parrots, snakes, jaguars and more.
Coffee, soybeans, wheat, rice ,sugarcane, cocoa, citrus,
and beef are all stuff they grow. Industries in the Amazon
are Brazil nuts, aluminum, cassava, and pepper.
Water as deep as 30 feet 9 meters covers the
land, turning it into an underwater forest. In the
Amazon people build houses right on the water. These
houses are standing over the river because they use
something called stilts to hold the houses over the
                          water.
A European explorer named Francis De Orellana, called
it the Amazon River because of the women
                  warriors he saw.
In the 1900’s many people moved to
the area near Brazil to Belem.
70% of Brazilians are Roman Catholic. They spend most of their
time outdoors because it’s so beautiful. Music and dancing are
popular pastimes. The Brazilian Samba is the national dance.
