Mainstream vs Independent horror films
What is a mainstream film?
• A mainstream film means films that are distributed to movie theatres which
give these films wide releases and attention.
• Mainstream films could be defined as Hollywood films because it is these
films which make up the majority of the most widely distributed films in the
world.
• An example of a mainstream horror film is Scream. It is mainstream because
it has had a lot of sequels, suggesting it’s very popular.
• Its target audience would be male and female teenagers and adults aged 15-35
years old in their middle class as it’s very realistic, gorey and could happen in
real life.
What is an independent film?
• An independent film means a film that stands on its own without a chance of
sequels or add ons.
• An example of independent films is The Cabin in theWoods. It is
independent because it stands alone as one film by one company.
• Its target audience would be 15-30 males in their middle class as it would
appeal to them since it’s aimed at them and because it’s quite dark and
sinister.
