2. The “Divide” symbol
I believe a key part of the relationship my three texts is the unique
divide symbol that features across all 3 pieces. The iconography
uses two opposing figures for the “I” letters in the word “Divide”
to match the symbolism to the plot and themes of the movie.
Because the title is so distinctive, the appearance of it through the 3
texts immediately links it with the others.

3. The “Divide” itself
I realised that it was really important for me to showcase the idea of a dual personality
within the film and to be able to show the conflict between the main character’s present
and his past. The idea of the figures in the divide symbolism help to establish this, but
within the 3 texts, I believed I did very well to use 3 different, yet still
creative, techniques to effectively show the “divide” in Riley’s character. On the poster, it
is two figures in distinctively separate costume facing one and other, in the magazine it is
Riley looking worryingly over his shoulder towards a menacing figure, and in the
trailer, Riley looks at himself in the mirror, and his reflection fades into existence. All 3
methods obviously symbolise the same thing, but were employed in totally different
ways, and it will be very easy for an audience to notice this.

4. Costume
A very visual aspect of the 3 texts is the costume that the character wears. To
evidence the rich/poor Divide, I had to be somewhat stereotypical with my costume.
Throughout all the texts, the rich persona displayed by Riley is evidenced by smart
suit and tie, along with black trousers and smart shoes, he is instantly recognizable
throughout all the texts. On the other hand, the other side of the spectrum, the poor
version of Riley is also recognizable. Costume in the poster and magazine is the
same, a blunt hoody with a grey beany hat, while in the trailer, the hat is
retained, but a drab, oversized brown top is used. I think throughout all the texts, it
is very easy to identify with the characters and their identities.

5. Colour Schemes and Connotations
Another area where I can draw links between my 3 texts is the use of colour. The poster, which
somewhat encapsulates the brunt of the plot, is very grey and edgy. This is mirrored in one half
of the magazine where the “past” Riley is situated, I decreased the contrast and brightness to a
near greyscale level. In the trailer also, at the start when “past” Riley is leaving home, the
lighting is very dim and drab. Contrary to this aspect, the rich side of the spectrum is more
colourful and bright. The contrasting white and black costume is striking and on the magazine I
actually slightly increased the contrast of the foreground figure, to create an even more apparent
discrepancy between the two figures. In the trailer also, the switch from poor to rich is very
noticeable, as the lighting evidently increases and everything is much more vibrant and alive.

6. In Conclusion...
- Distinctive, unique “Divide” logo covers all 3 texts
- Methodology behind showing mental trauma of character
utilized in 3 different ways across 3 different texts but all are
easily recognizable and easy to associate with one and other
- Costume across all 3 texts is stereotypical, easy to
understand and in most cases, the same across all texts,
meaning identification of movie is easy and a firm lead
character is established.
- Colour schemes throughout all 3 texts represent rich/poor
theme. Brightness and vibrancy showcases rich aspect and
grey, dull, edgy colours showcases the poor aspect.
