1. Q2) HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY
TEXTS?
2. There are clear links between our
trailer, poster and magazine front
cover which are done effectively.
They include a range of conventions
seen in horror films and both
conforms and subverts these to
create an original piece of work.
3. Colour Scheme
Throughout out trailer, magazine front
cover and poster, our colour scheme of
black, white and red was consistent.
The reason for using this colour scheme
was because black is commonly used in
horror as it connotes darkness and evil,
white is the opposite and connotes
purity and innocence. The nun in our
trailer is supposed to be holy and pure,
however, due to what has happened in her
childhood, this does not happen.
4. The majority of the poster was black
which creates a sense that the nun
is possibly hiding something.
The red in the poster is in the ‘T’
in Note and emphasizes religious
themes present in our trailer.
The magazine front cover uses the
same colour scheme. The cover is
black with the text white and red
which links all three texts
together.
5. Titles
The title used in the magazine and poster
are the same font. On the magazine
however, the white font clashed with the
white on the front of the nun’s outfit.
Therefore, we decided to make the font a
light grey so as it wouldn't be too
different from white.
The title in the trailer was made using a
template on iMovie and therefore we
couldn’t insert our title into iMovie so
we had to use the default font.
6. Character
We decided to use one main character
in our trailer, and it was only
appropriate that we used the same
character for our poster and magazine
front cover. This ensured the audience
could link all three texts together.
Our protagonist also wears the nun
outfit in the trailer, poster and
magazine and creates clear links
between the texts.
7. Religious Imagery
In the trailer, there is a lot of
religious iconography used such as a
cross, bible etc. In the poster there
is a candle used which connotes light
and hope especially in a religious
sense.
This makes it clear that our trailer
is based on religion, and although
there is no religious icons on the
magazine, our actress is wearing the
nun outfit still.
8. Lighting
Lighting is a big focus in our trailer
as there is a range of both dark
lighting, and bright lighting as we
have to get the contrast between
religious imagery and making the
trailer have horror conventions.
The poster too has a big focus on
light, as there is one main light
source from a candle which makes the
image look like it’s glowing.
9. There is exposure used for the image
on the magazine front cover. This
makes the image looks sinister as her
eyes are blue and they draw attention
to her face, similar to the image in
the poster of her looking down which
too draws attention.
The background of both the poster and
the magazine front cover are black
which links these two items together.
10. Cracks
In the trailer, as a child Jane finds
cracked wall paper and rips it off the
wall to reveal a Latin inscription.
This is the physical cracks used in
our trailer.
However, you can also look at it
symbolically as essentially she is
breaking and her faith is being
shattered which is why there are
cracks in her face.
11. In the magazine front cover, there is
a ripped texture that says ’50 most
horrific movie moments..’ Although
this is not to do with our trailer, it
brings the theme of cracks and ripped
texture into the magazine and links
them together.
12. The combination of our trailer, poster
and magazine front cover worked
effectively as there are clear links
between all three texts which clearly
identifies the genre as horror.
