1. Magazine Publishing Companies
One of the main publishing companies is IPC Media, which publishes the music magazine NME. This
is the publishing company I am interested in for my magazine as I believe there is a niche in the
market for a new magazine on music today, maybe a sister magazine to NME, which can show a
range of music genres and appeal to an even wider audience, a music magazine aimed at mainly
females where NME is aimed at mainly men.
IPC Media is the publisher of many magazines including the music magazine NME (New Musical
Express). IPC Media is owned by the publishing company Time Inc. (Owned by Time Warner). IPC
Media is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with a huge portfolio
selling over 350 million copies per year.
IPC produces over 60 iconic media brands. They have an audience of an estimate of 26 million
readers in the UK and 20 million online views,that’s two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men.
IPC’s Magazines are split into 3 groups, each group set at a certain audience; Men, mass market
women and upmarket women.
IPC’s men's portfolio (IPC Inspire) consists of a group of leisure brands including Country Life, Horse
& Hound, Rugby World and Decanter, as well as lifestyle brands such as Nuts, Mousebreaker and
NME.
Their mass market women's division (IPC Connect) has famous women's weeklies including Look,
Now, Chat and Woman, plus, TV entertainment brands such as What's on TV, TVTimes and TV &
Satellite Week.
Finally Their upmarket women's division (IPC Southbank) consists of luxury fashion brands including
Marie Claire and InStyle, lifestyle brands likewoman&home and essentials and home interest brands
such as Ideal Home, Livingetc and housetohome.
IPC also runs Marketforce which is the UK's leading newstrade sales and Distribution Company,
whichis 23% of the total magazine category.Marketforce was voted the best distributor for three
years running in the annual Wessenden Retailer Survey, won several Ace Awardsand has Consistent
outperformance of the market at retail.
IPC is also a company that cares about it’s surroundings as it focuses on its effect on three main
areas – community, environment and the collective workforceoftheir employees and their input and
actions. They highly value the input and involvement of their employees, including volunteering,
supporting their environmental activities and participating in fundraising activities.
IPC only publish one big music magazine which is NME and it has shown to be one of their most
successful magazines. This is why I would like to create a sister magazine using IPC Media as my
publisher, to create even more success.
