Food security “exists when all people at all times have
both physical and economic access to sufficient, safe,
and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs for
an active and healthy life.”
4. WHY IS FOOD SECURITY IMPORTANT?
Food security is important because:
It is the minimum staple element for our survival.
Food is a fundamental human right.
Stability is about being food secure at all times. Food insecurity can be transitory with
short term shocks the result of a bad season, a change in employment status, conflict or
a rise in food prices. When prices rise, it is the poor who are most at risk because they
spend a much higher portion of their income on food.
6. ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE PRESENT SCENARIO
The Indian economy is growing in historical way with an unprecedented rates and adding, second fastest-growing economies in the
Asia after the china. The real GDP grew at 3.95% a year per head from 1980 to 2005, and at 5.4% a year from 2000 to 2005 (Deaton
and Druze, 2009). Besides, rice and wheat are the staple food products and government of India maintains buffer stock of these
two commodities to face the irregularities emerged in future. Right now India has self sufficient food grains. In general, sustains in
food security stands on three basic pillars: namely, (i) Sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis. (ii) Having
sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet. (iii) Appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition
and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation. Once the country fulfils all these targets, feed the population efficiently.
7. STEPS TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT
Food security, both at the national and household levels, has been the focus of
agricultural development in India ever since the mid-sixties when import dependence
for cereals had gone up to 16 percent.
Minimum Export Price (MEP) fixed for potatoes at USD 450 per M.T. w.e.f.
26.06.2014 (now withdrawn with improved availability and fall in prices w.e.f. 20.2.2015)
and of onions at USD 300 per M.T. w.e.f 21.08.2014 respectively.
8. WHAT ARE THE EXTRA STEPS CAN BE TAKEN IN
FUTURE?
Providing proper amount of food to the poor and needy people at minimum level.
There must be a proper balance of population in rural and urban areas.
There must be a provision of proper machinery tools for the cultivation of crops so
that it can increase
The food must be sell at the fix and affortable price.

By improving agriculture, nutrition, health, also improve the food security.
The number of people experiencing hunger continues to grow, both in
wealthy and poor countries.
Modern agriculture is heavily reliant on finite external inputs such as oil
and fertiliser .
