\nIn addition to the careful design of the MagSafe connector, we’ve also put a great deal of thought into the placement of the power port as well as the rest of the I/O ports. For easy access, all ports are placed along the sides. Here are the ports on the left side of the computer (from back to front).\n\nMagSafe port. For plugging into an external power source. Use this port to connect the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter.\n\nMini-DVI. Connect the latest in digital displays and projectors using the Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter (sold separately). Purchase the Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter to connect VGA monitors, or purchase the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter to connect to a TV via S-video or composite video.\n\nGigabit Ethernet. Connect directly to a LAN, DSL, or cable modem.\n\nFireWire 400. Plug in a variety of popular 6-pin FireWire devices—hard drives, DV cameras, and so on.\n\nUSB 2.0. Plug in a variety of devices—a printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, joystick, iPod nano, and others—with the fastest USB connection possible, 480 Mbps. USB 2.0 is compatible with USB 1.1 devices, so you can continue to use your older USB peripherals without any cable adapters.\n\nOptical digital audio input/Audio line in. Through the combined optical digital input/audio line in port, you can bring sound into your computer in either analog or digital format for sampling music, adding sounds with a self-powered microphone, or even converting your old LPs to MP3s. MacBook is perhaps the only consumer notebook on the market today to offer optical digital audio input as well as output for a pristine audio experience. The optical digital audio I/O uses the S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) protocol; and because optical digital audio transmits data as impulses of light rather than electrical signals, it enables true noise-free sound, eliminating troublesome ground loops and ensuring higher audio and signal quality. Using a Toslink jack–to–miniplug adapter, you can connect digital audio tape (DAT) decks or digital instruments using a Toslink cable.\n\nOptical digital output/Headphone out. Through the combined optical digital output/headphone out port, have your audio go out to headphones, external self-powered speakers, and even 5.1 surround sound systems.\n\nSecurity slot. Secure your computer to your work area using a Kensington or Noble security cable. (on other side)\n\n
\n
\n
Each classroom and meeting space/office will have a VGA adaptor in the room, these cannot be removed.\n\nSeem trivial but around $220 each.\n

Talk about battery life\n
\nThe MacBook design features a unique keyboard that is fully integrated into the bottom enclosure. \nThe result: It’s significantly more difficult for prying little hands to pick off and remove the keycaps.\n\nIn addition, the new keyboard layout gives you easy access to Mac OS X features such as Dashboard (F4) and Expose (F3) and puts all the media controls at your fingertips (F7-12).\n
No hibernate like on PC\nSleep does consume some power.\nNo need to shut down each day, simply close the lid and start off where you left off\n
\nThe 8x slot-loading double-layer-burning SuperDrive, built into every 2.2GHz MacBook, reads and writes to a variety of DVD and CD media, including DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The new SuperDrive built into the MacBook can also burn up to 8.5GB using double-layer DVD+R media. The SuperDrive also works with the integrated iLife applications to give you the easiest way to create high-quality CD and DVD content. Organize your music collection in iTunes and create your own music CDs. Use iDVD to burn your movies and photos to a disc that can be played in almost any consumer DVD player.\n

The Apple Menu is similar in some ways to the start menu in windows. It gets you to basic functions, enables you to start up and shut down the computer and also gives you access to system preferences\n\nThe application menu changes depending on what application you are running. This is a key difference between windows and the mac. On windows the menu bar is part of the program. It moves about with the program when you draw the application around. On the Mac the menu is always visible at the top of the screen\n\nThe extra menu area is like the “task bar” on the PC. It gives you access to time, network settings, battery indicators and other programs that may be running on your computer.\n\nThe bottom is the “Dock” this is similar to the “quick start” area on windows. It provides shortcuts to commonly used programs on your computer. It may not look exactly the same as the image shown as we have configured it for you.\n

When you click on the red circle you are not exiting the program like in windows you are just closing that window. Each application can have multiple windows. This is an important distinction. Although there is nothing wrong with running multiple applications on the same computer it is good to exit applications if you are not going to use them for a long time or you find the system performance to be lagging. To properly exit the application go to the application menu and exit.\n

All classrooms will have ethernet cables that you can use. This will ensure high speed as it not on the wireless. This will be useful in particular if you are watching a video from the network. day to day wireless is fine.\n\nHKIS networks should automatically connect on all campuses. HKISWFI is for HKIS equipment and requires a key to access. The Key is known only ETS staff.\n\nDragonWI is for personal equipment and can be logged into with novell username and password. \n\nHKIS GUEST if open access, it speed limited and only access to websites.\n
