The survey of 535 CIS families found that nearly half of students do not use the bus service. Private car use both ways accounted for 57% of respondents and was motivated by flexibility, trip length, and time with children. Suggestions to reduce private car use included improving bus flexibility, facilitating carpooling through the school, and restricting private car access near the school.

5. Private Car Both Ways : Improved bus flexibility may have a modest impact in private car usage but most families with drivers are unlikely to respond to incentives to ride the bus. 8. Bus TO school : The need for flexibility to go to different locations after school for activities or play dates is the primary reason for only using the bus going TO school. Represent 7% of survey respondents (9% of actual riders) Trip length was not an isolated issue – 63% also needed flexibility Convenience/availability of after-school-activities (ASA) transport is an issue 74% of these respondents use private car to get home; 31% use the public bus N = 35 (respondents may select more than one choice)

9. Bus From school : Dropping the kids off on the way to work or issues with timing/duration of trip to school were primary reasons for not taking the bus to school.
