Anatomy


Commonalities
To open an app, simply tap on the icon. To
minimize the app, press the home button. To fully
close the app, double press the home button (or
swipe up from the top of the dock with four
fingers), then flick the app off the top of the
screen.
Many apps have common symbols that perform
specific tasks, just like icons in Microsoft Office
applications. Knowing these symbols will help
you acclimate to new apps.

Screen Brightness

Multitasking Gestures
Swipe left or right with four fingers to switch between
open apps (must be in an app to activate).
Slide up with four fingers from the bottom of the screen/
TOP of the dock to reveal the multitasking bar.
Pinch five fingers together to return to the home screen.
If you find that you use these gestures accidentally, you
can turn them off. Open settings, tap general, and turn off
multitasking.


Multitasking Window
The multitasking window allows you to
quickly swap between recently opened
apps. Double click on the home button or
swipe up from the top of the dock with four
fingers to activate.
This reveals the most recently opened apps.
Push or flick the app preview window to
the top of the screen to close the app.


Closing Apps
While having apps open in
multitasking can be handy, it is a
good idea to close running apps out
occasionally.
To close apps, double tap the home
button or swipe up from the top of
the dock with four fingers to open
the Multitasking Window. Flick app
images to the top of the screen to
close running apps.


Orientation and Mute
Open Settings, tap General, and find Use
Side Switch. Choose Lock Screen if you
want the switch to lock the rotation, or
Mute if you want the switch to make the
iPad silent.
You can easily access the mute (or lock
rotation) option from the Control Center.
The selection NOT set for the switch will
appear in the Control Center.


Move and Delete Apps

You can move the icons around on your
iPad and delete apps you no longer use.
Hold your finger on any icon for a few
seconds and they will all start to shake. You
can now drag them around to rearrange.

You can also move apps to other pages by
dragging the icon to the edge of the current
screen to go to the next page.


Customizing Dock
The dock at the bottom of the screen can hold
your most used applications or folders. While
moving apps around, just drag the app or folder
down to the dock. The dock appears on every
screen and holds up to 6 icons.
Recommended apps on the dock are
dependent upon whether the iPad is an
individual or shared student device. Settings,
Google Drive, Safari, Chrome and Chirp are
some you may wish to consider.

Making Folders
Folders allow you to group similar apps together to
save screen space. While organizing your apps, drag
one app icon on top of another. This then creates a
folder with both apps inside. You can name the folder
to reflect the apps it contains.
To move more apps into a particular folder, simply
return to the main screen and drag the other apps
onto the folder icon. Folders contain multiple screens
and you can now have numerous apps in each
folder. Nine apps will display on each page, swipe
across to reveal additional pages.


Creating Web Clips

You can add a new app icon for any website to
your home screen. While browsing in safari, tap
the up arrow button and then tap add to home
screen. Some websites supply an icon; if not
then a screenshot of the current view is used.
You can also rename the web clip before
selecting Add.
Practice this skill by creating a web clip for
a website you frequently use.


Favorites Bar

Safari on the iPad comes with a Favorites
Bar that you can use to quickly access your
favorite web pages.
To make the Favorites Bar visible at all times,
go to Settings then Safari. Turn on Show
Favorites Bar.


Bookmarking

T the up arrow, then select Bookmark.
ap
Decide whether to store on Favorites Bar or
in Bookmarks, which will appear under the
book icon on the right side of the web
address.


Avoiding Clutter with Reader
If you see an icon to the left of a web
address that looks like lines on a page, that
means the ‘Reader’ function is available on
that webpage, tap to activate.
If you don’t see the icon, Reader isn’t
available for the page you are viewing. See
before and after examples to the right


Save Safari Images

While browsing Safari you can save
images you like. T and hold an
ap
image until a pop-up appears. Choose
Save Image. This image will now be
saved in your Photos album. Launch
the Photos app to view the image.
Be sure you model good digital
citizenship by applying photo credit,
perhaps by using the Skitch app!

aking a Screenshot

To take a screenshot, just press the
Home button and the Sleep/Wake
button at the same time.
The iPad screen flashes white
quickly and makes a sound like a
camera shutter. The image will be
saved in the Photos app.


Spotlight Search Feature

Drag down the middle of any home screen to
reveal the Spotlight Search.
Type the name of the song, artist, file or app
that you’re looking for in the search box.
To customize what will be searched, go to
Settings, General, Spotlight Search.


Security Settings

Restrictions provide a password
protected ability to lock down certain
features on an iPad. They may be
set at a district or school level. DO
NOT SHARE access code with
students!
To access: Settings, General,
Restrictions, Enable Restrictions


Speak Selection
Want to have text read aloud? Speak Selection
will read text to you. Press your finger down,
release when you see the spotlight. Stretch the
blue dots individually to highlight what you want
read, then select Speak.
Even if you don’t have VoiceOver enabled,
Speak Selection will read you the highlighted
text and give you formatting options like cut,
copy, and paste. Turn on Speak Selection in
Settings/General/Accessibility/Speak
Selection.

Guided Access
Guided Access allows you to 'lock down' a
student into working only in one application. To
use:
Settings / General / Accessibility/ Guided
Access. Turn On, select a 4 digit passcode.
Open the app you want student to use, Triple
Click home button, Select START upper right.
When student is ready to leave app, return
iPad to you, you Triple Click home button,
enter code, you can then end or resume
Guided Access.

Magnify

T and hold your finger on some
ap
text to bring up a magnifying glass.
Drag to move the magnifying glass
around and place the cursor where
your need it.


Cut/Copy/Paste
T the insertion point to display
ap
selection options or double-tap a
word to select it. Drag the blue grab
points to select more or less text.
Depending upon the app you are in,
available options such as cut, copy,
paste, replace, define, speak will
appear.


Split Keyboard
Typing while holding the iPad can
be awkward. To split the keyboard,
place both your thumbs in the center
of the keyboard (G/H keys) and
swipe them away to the edge of the
screen. To return to the joint
keyboard, simply tap and slide the
hide keyboard icon to merge. It will
merge and dock back to its original
form. You can also swipe the G/H
keys to the center to merge.


iBooks and PDFs

You can open PDF documents, such as a
PDF attached to an email, with iBooks.
When you view a PDF email attachment
or PDF document from the web, simply
tap "Open in iBooks," located in the upperright corner of the screen. iBooks will
open and you'll be able to view your PDF
using the iBooks app.


Using Graphic Organizers
Find the QR Code reader app on your
iPad. (suggest: i-nigma) Scan the code or
type the following address in Safari:

PDFs such as this can then be used in an
annotation app such as Doodle Buddy,
Paper Port Notes or Notability.

Customizing Wallpaper
T the Settings app and then select Wallpapers &
ap
Brightness. Choose Wallpaper. At the top of the
page, you'll find Apple’s Wallpapers - Dynamic and
Stills, followed by your own pictures.
Dynamic Wallpaper and high screen brightness will
consume battery power faster.
T any image to bring up the full-screen view. Now,
ap
you've got three options: set the lock screen, home
screen, or both.


Typing Tips
Double tap the space bar to automatically add a period and space to the end of a sentence.
You can hold down some keys such as letters or punctuation to bring up extra options, such as accents
for foreign languages. For example tap and hold the ! key to use the apostrophe.
Double tap the UP arrow for shift lock.
If you see a red dotted underline on a word you can tap this and suggestions for alternative words
automatically appear.
When typing an email address hold down period to select .net, .com, etc.


Restarting Properly
Pressing the Sleep/Wake button once puts the iPad in
a sleep mode, wake it by pressing the home button.
To shut the iPad down, hold down the Sleep/Wake
button until the red slider appears, slide your finger
across to turn off the iPad. To turn iPad back on, hold
down the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo
appears.
If an application refuses to start or your iPad has
frozen, just press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for
a few seconds until the red slider appears, then hold
down the Home button until the app closes.

Evaluating Apps
What to Look For - Business model, cost, in-app purchases,
advertisements, ease of use, learning curve, integration with other
apps/web resources, getting product off app, are accounts required?
Content (consumption) vs. Creation
