1. Lock-Out/Tag-Out (otherwise known as the control of hazardous
energy), commonly occurs in most workplaces. Many lives are
saved when safe lock-out/tag-out procedures are followed in the
correct order. Like other Safety Sequence activities in this book, the
exact steps to be followed when locking out a piece of equipment in
your facility may slightly differ but the idea is the same. Ten steps
to control hazardous energy follow but you may have a few less or a
few more as part of your facility operations. Feel free to add your
extra steps by simply writing each step out on a full sheet of paper
and adding it to the packet you give each team or if you are feeling
creative, make a hand drawn sketch of the step instead. If there are
steps that never occur in your facility, feel free to remove them from
the packet you give to each team. Safety Sequence activities are
flexible and can be modified to fit any plant.
The following ten pages show ten steps, in the correct order, of a
safe lock-out/tag-out procedure. When making copies of these for
teams to use with the activity, be sure to shuffle them before giving
them out.
