Where do my
learners
need to be?
Objectives
BOSTES NSW states in the Japanese
Extension Stage 6 syllabus that there are
two objectives for learners in this course
(2009).
No additional content is prescribed in the
syllabus.
Objectives
Objective 1 — present and discuss
opinions, ideas and points of view in
Japanese
Objective 2 — evaluate, analyse and
respond to text that is in Japanese and that
reflects the culture of Japanese-speaking
communities.
Meeting the Objectives
Meeting these objectives will involve
using the skills of listening, speaking,
reading and writing, either individually
or in combination, and being able to
move between Japanese and
English.
The objectives also make cultural
understanding a priority.
Exploring Authentic Japanese
The students are proficient in the use of
basic communicative Japanese from prior
study.
The aim of this course is to expose them to
more authentic texts and encourage them to
explore more advanced topics.
Problem-based Learning
This problem-based learning task fulfils the
stated goal of having learners respond to a
text that is in Japanese (Objective 2).
The task reflects the culture of Japanese-
speaking communities through the use of an
authentic letter and video provided by a
Sister City organisation from Japan.
Engaging with the
Japanese community
Students will also be expected to interact
with native Japanese speakers as they liaise
with the Sister City organisation and survey
Japanese students to research their project.
Students will present their ideas to the Sister
City organisation as the culmination of their
project (Objective 1).

  • 2. Objectives BOSTES NSW states in the Japanese Extension Stage 6 syllabus that there are two objectives for learners in this course (2009). No additional content is prescribed in the syllabus.
  • 3. Objectives Objective 1 — present and discuss opinions, ideas and points of view in Japanese Objective 2 — evaluate, analyse and respond to text that is in Japanese and that reflects the culture of Japanese-speaking communities.
  • 4. Meeting the Objectives Meeting these objectives will involve using the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, either individually or in combination, and being able to move between Japanese and English. The objectives also make cultural understanding a priority.
  • 5. Exploring Authentic Japanese The students are proficient in the use of basic communicative Japanese from prior study. The aim of this course is to expose them to more authentic texts and encourage them to explore more advanced topics.
  • 6. Problem-based Learning This problem-based learning task fulfils the stated goal of having learners respond to a text that is in Japanese (Objective 2). The task reflects the culture of Japanese- speaking communities through the use of an authentic letter and video provided by a Sister City organisation from Japan.
  • 7. Engaging with the Japanese community Students will also be expected to interact with native Japanese speakers as they liaise with the Sister City organisation and survey Japanese students to research their project. Students will present their ideas to the Sister City organisation as the culmination of their project (Objective 1).
