The Future of Marketing: Advocacy - A Case Study Approach to Understanding What Works.
We’ve all heard the stats - Advocacy & Word of Mouth are more authentic and effective than traditional paid media. The challenge is scaling Advocacy so that you can reach as many people as mass media marketing does. In 2013, we finally saw the emergence of influencer and advocacy marketing as a scalable marketing channel. Brands can now harness the untapped power of their employees, customers & fans to promote their brands.
Research from Forrester and Edelman’s trust barometer has shown that customers will trust peers or a company’s employees for advice on their next purchases far more than advertisements or direct marketing.
By empowering employees & customer to be advocates and influencers who promote your brand, you can grow awareness, reach & revenue.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Editor's Notes
I’m very pleased to be here – thank you for inviting me.
Like Catherine Bone, account manager, I’m based in Jisc customer services. As a subject specialist, I help people make the most of all that Jisc has to offer in two key areas: libraries and digital resources.
I’m not going to be speaking to you from the standpoint of a marketing specialist, nor would I call myself a social media professional as such. But for many years I’ve come to find social media an essential tool in my work, including promoting digital resources and libraries.and I hope it will be useful to share some of the things I’ve learned with you.
What it means to use social media for engagement
How this could translate into the work of learning resource centres or libraries
Discuss how social media can play a part in engaging people with digital resources and libraries/learning resources services, what you’re using and what kind of solutions you’re developing
Provide some pointers to Jisc resources and how you engage with us on social media
I am not going to put forward hard and fast rules – I can offer you some suggestions; specific tools you use may vary
Social media is not the only way to engage our learners, staff and communities.
As the image suggests, it’s all about weaving a variety of approaches into our services in ways that fit our needs
My slides are already available for download on Slideshare
I include my Twitter handle in case you want to talk about this session there now or afterwards
Activity to find out a little about our various social media activity
When we talk about engaging with someone we sometimes mean simply ‘making contact with’.
But when are trying to engage people in our library/LRC, it’s important to try and get a more meaningful level of interaction.
A degree of commitment
More than one-way
Importance of trust and shared values
I particularly like the image because of the idea I came across of the digital information seeker ‘whirling and bouncing’ around the web, like a bee seeking pollen.
Activity in pairs
My understanding of engagement was heavily influenced by the “What Works” report published by the HEA
http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/assets/documents/retention/What_works_final_report.pdf
This emphasised the importance of university students feeling a sense of belonging in order for them to be engaged, to be retained and succeed as students.
So what does this mean for our use of social media in our work with learners, staff and wider communities?
Probably the most important point
It’s ok to be quiet on social media sometimes
Get to know who is in the space and what happens there
Listen out for opportunities to join the conversation – what can you add?
The power of simple ‘likes’ and ‘shares’
Social media as a window on the worlds of your service users, learners, staff, communities
Complements rather than replaces other methods of finding out needs
Importance of acting on any feedback
Prompt responses to questions
Possibility of positive outcomes from negative feedback
Image shows Spare Rib a new Jisc resource, offered in conjunction with the British Library, freely available.
It was promoted on social media with great success recently
Jisc makes a lot of use of social media to engage people and share resources
We are also interested in how social media is playing a part in the life of the digital learner, student and scholar
Updated e-safety guidance coming soon.
Mention also blogs and podcasts
It’s a conversation
How can libraries put this into practice?
Example - Coleg Sir Gar Library https://www.facebook.com/pages/Coleg-Sir-Gar-Library/123395987732869
Short, pithy posts to FB – often about people, learners (bilingual)
Engage with other libraries as well as internally

Amplifying events through social media
E.g. live tweeting, slide sharing, sharing images, blogging

Other examples include
23 Things http://cpd23.blogspot.co.uk/
10 days of Twitter (various adaptations for different groups including some for librarians e.g. https://aru10dot.wordpress.com/
Whilst I did say there are few hard and fast rules with social media, I think it’s fair to say that there are some good guidelines out there – like this excellent slide deck from Robin2go
