The document discusses Jisc's role in providing digital resources and collaboration support to UK education and research communities. Specifically, it summarizes Jisc's four main activities: 1) providing and developing network infrastructure and services, 2) supporting procurement of digital content, 3) providing local engagement and support through regional teams, and 4) conducting R&D to identify emerging technologies. It then discusses themes around digital resources, libraries, collaboration, and open educational resources.

'The Future of Connecting People' hosted by IATA
Autumn Edition - number 10 - of the Union Suisse event created by 100%Open and brought to Switzerland in collaboration with Catalyx.

I designed this corporate presentation for use at a retailer convention. We hosted a gathering for member retailers on a day dedicated to independent Christian retailers—branded Independence Day. At that time Apple’s iPod was gaining in popularity, so I decided to put an i-spin on Independence Day, dubbing it “iDay”. The Munce Group’s iDay event included a presentation from the Munce Group, our signature ‘From the Heart’ artist/author panel event and an appropriate iPod Nano giveaway, fully loaded with content from the artists and authors represented on the panel.
NOTE: I’ve abbreviated this presentation to condense the file size. So you may notice that some of the page guides in the upper left (1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc.) are slightly off since I’ve deleted some slides.
Communes, Commonism and Co-ops: Rethinking the university as a hackerspaceJoss Winn
My abstract for the British HCI conference 2015 at the University of Lincoln. I'm on the 'HCI, politics and activism' panel.
In this talk I reflect on the history of hacking and its origins in the 'commune' of the academy (Winn, 2013). I then discuss the role of Copyleft licenses (Stallman, 2010) as "the practical manifestation of a social structure" (Weber, 2004, 85; Winn, 2015); a form of administration for the production of 'commonism' (Dyer-Witheford, 2007; Neary and Winn, 2012). Finally, I argue that the emerging form of 'open co-operative' can be understood as a latent material response to Stallman's original predicament when Venture Capitalism took over his 'Garden of Eden': mutual ownership and control of knowledge production. Significantly, the "crucial innovation" for an emerging form of 'open co-operative' (Bauwens, 2014) is a further adaptation of Copyleft called Commons-Based Reciprocity Licenses, or 'Copyfarleft' (Kleiner, 2007), thereby uniting co-operative legal structures with subversive licensing contracts. To what extent can we reconstitute higher education and the idea of the university along the lines of an open co-operative, so that academic science can continue to contribute to the common good? June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Gregynog Colloquium 201515/06/2015
Editor's Notes
I’m delighted to be back at Gregynog, now in a new role working for Jisc.
Jisc is a charity and we offer digital services and solutions for UK education and research.
Based in Jisc customer services, I help people make the most of all that Jisc has to offer in two key areas: libraries and digital resources.
I’d like to:
Give you an idea of how Jisc can support you and work with you
Share some thoughts with you on what collaboration means when we’re trying to engage people with digital resources and digital libraries
Being in the last slot I’m conscious I am standing between you and your enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings here, before dinner. On the plus side your heads by now are buzzing with inspiration about digital resources and collaboration, so my third aim is to:
Capture some of your ideas and questions to take away with me and help me shape what I offer in my new role.
Vision
To make the UK the most digitally advanced education and research nation in the world
Mission
To enable people in higher education, further education and skills in the UK to perform at the forefront of international practice by exploiting fully the possibilities of modern digital empowerment, content and connectivity
I provide subject specialist advice as part of our Advice and Engagement activity.
This involves me working closely with our Account Managers (whose role it is to look after our relationship with your university and be the primary point of contact - more about them later)
It also involves building relationships with Digital Resources
Also R&D in relation to Libraries
My slides are already available for download on Slideshare
I include my Twitter tag and you’re welcome to comment about this session.
I work with colleagues right across Jisc to help customers find solutions, drawing on all of our services and products that involve digital resources, and all those that benefit libraries and learning resource centres.
Working with research excellence, learning and teaching, student experience and institutional management.
My support is tailored to customer needs but typically includes: briefings, webinars, participation in specialist forums, training and events, and responding to specialist enquiries
My role is very much about engagement.
Digital resources and digital libraries are fine things, but they need users and readers for their value to be realised. The challenge is not only to unlock the door but attract them in
In the first six months I’ve been fielding a number of queries including:
Signposting to Jisc resources and services
Managing and promoting digital collections – including when you have little or no library
Social media
Digital literacy
collaboration central for me to do my job promoting the value of digital resources and libraries
Here are some conclusions I’ve come to about collaboration when it comes to promoting digital resources
Image: Cute https://www.flickr.com/photos/meffi/163836474/
Collaboration
Doesn’t always feel comfortable
Often put in place within a project framework
Not always sustainable

The UK Medical Heritage Library is making the 19th century history of medicine freely available to all. 15 million pages of 19th Century medical texts will be digitised and made available via a number of platforms including the Internet Archive and the Wellcome Digital Library.
This is a very broad subject area and includes items about medical sciences, consumer health, sport and fitness, diet and nutrition and historical medical practices such as phrenology and hydrotherapy.
Wellcome and 9 partners
The project is funded by Jisc and the Wellcome Library. It will significantly extend the digital collections of the US Medical Heritage Library, a consortium of American medical libraries.
Visualising Medical History
A separate project is currently being commissioned as part of UK-MHL called Visualising Medical History Project which will make the collection available on Jisc Historical Texts where, alongside traditional means, users will be able to use data visualisations to access and interpret the texts.
