2. WHAT IS CULTURAL STUDIES ?
 It is field of theoretically, politically and empirically
engaged cultural analysis that concentrates upon
political dynamics of contemporary culture, its
historical foundations, defining traits and conflicts.
 Cultural Studies combines a variety of politically
engaged critical theories including Semiotics,
Marxism, Feminist theory, Critical Race theory, Post-
structuralism, Post Colonialism, Media theory, Film
studies etc..

3. LIMITATIONS OF CULTURAL STUDIES
 Difficult to Define which is the best ‘Culture’ and
because it is wide study, hard to understand what it
try to do?
 Missing of Reality (Poetic Justice)
 We don’t study culture within
 It’s about whatever happening at the moment
‘Popular culture’
 Lack of adequate knowledge – “deep play of
meanings” or “thick description of a culture”
 Not fueled by harsh Research

 Diversity of Approach and subject matter
 ‘Culture Wars’ of academia
 Traditional classroom would never accept Cultural
Studies as it is about breaking of culture.
 It is not bounded by any rule , so it is field without
boundaries that creates difficulty in
understanding.

5. MASS MEDIA CULTURE
 In Modern time, there are many adds,
Indian Television serials and movies that
challenge the culture.
 That present the issues that can’t easily
accepted by society and culture like
polygamy, changing the role/stereotypes of
women, generation gap, emergence of new
identities LGBT.
 e.g Khans , their marriages with Hindu
women, in Satyamev Jayate presents dark
side of Indian society.

INDIAN CULTURE

Convention. It is an
online store of
Women’s wear
which change the
stereotypes of
women’s role.
 Advertisement of
Tanisqh which
challenge the Indian
culture and show
the marriage of
woman who has a
girl.

7. TV SOAP OPERA
Ye Hai Mohabbatein
This shows the Intercaste
marriage of Ishita and
Raman and concept of
polygamy.
The role of step mother is
in positive way.
Hitler Didi
This show is about
working lady who
struggle to balance the
professional and family.
She faces racism
discrimination and
problems of society.

8. FILMS
Pk is much philosophical
film that arises question
of existence of God and
create confusion among
diversities of Indian
religion. Alienation of pk
on earth..
RamLeela, which also
controvertial film because
of the using the name of
Lord Ram and retelling
the history of Rajput and
Rabari.

Because of rational and
philosophical thinking
cultural studies examines
or questions everything
and because of that
limitations of it created.
