Chinese traders settled in what is now the barangay of Lian in Batangas Province to trade with locals centuries before European contact. When the Spanish arrived, a trader named Li-An was asked what the place was called. He replied "Lian", which the Spanish took as the name of the town. Lian is now politically divided into 19 barangays including San Diego, known for its beach, promontory, and mangrove rock formation that attract many tourists. A sample itinerary involves taking a bus from Manila to Lian, then a tricycle to San Diego to see the rock formation, have meals, walk along the sea, and take a shower before returning.
