Centuries before Magellan, Chinese traders settled in what is now the town of Lian in Batangas province to trade with locals. When the Spanish arrived, a trader named Li-An was asked what the place was called. He replied "Lian", which the Spanish took as the name of the town. Today, the beach at San Diego in Lian is a popular tourist destination, known for its promixity and beauty. Tourists can visit attractions like the mangrove rock formation, go swimming at resorts, and do activities like biking, basketball, and beach volleyball.

traders were already bartering their porce-
lains, saucers beads, needles and the like
with cotton, pearls shells and other pro-
ducts of the natives.
4. In Luzon, especially in Batangas Province,
some of these Chinese trades settled along the
seashore of community called San Diego (now
one the Barangay of Lian) until the Spaniards
came to place. Incidentally, a Chinese trader
whose name was “LI-AN” was asked by Spaniard
leader, “Que es el nombre este lugar? (what is the
name of this place?). Thinking that his name was
the answered “LIAN”. The Spaniard thinking that
this was already a town nodded and said “SI,si,el
pueblo de Lian” (Yes,yes,the town of Lian).
