The document contains several stories about the origins of barangay names from different areas of the Philippines. The first story describes how the barangay of Banawel in Mountain Province got its name from the call of a bird called "Fennawar" that was commonly heard in the area. Another story explains that the barangay of Tawangan was originally called "Nadaklan" but got its current name due to a misunderstanding when a soldier misheard a local man refer to the net he was using to catch birds. A third story shares how the barangay of Uddiawan got its name from the phrase "Mangdappat kayo, ngem ti maudi maawanan

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

The Story behind Brgy. Banawel's Name
by Yesha Borbon
In the heart of Natonin, Mountain Province, lies the
largest barangay, Banawel, where I spent my childhood.
Long ago, before it was known as Banawel, this area was
uninhabited except for wildlife. An example is a bird
allegedly known as the 'Fennawar' (swift) ,named for the
distinctive sound it made.
One day, there was an alleged man who explored the
place and heard a repeated sound, “fennawar, fennawar”,
then looked aroubd and saw a bird. A few years later, many
people arrived and lived in that place and decided to name
the place “Fennawar” after the bird which they always heard
in that place only. After years of advancement and
civilization, they finally called the place “Fenawar”. Until
now there is this part of the barangay called “Fenawar”, but
today the barangay is now called “Banawel”.
*This is just according to stories from my
aunts who also learned it from the elders of our
barangay since there are no published books,
how the barangay got its name is still unclear.
3. The fascinating history of Brgy. Talite
The place which is bounded on the Western
direction of the seat government of Aguinaldo
towards the Municipality of Mayoyao was name
Talite since time immemorial as per account of our
great grandparents. The place was thick forested
area at the time it was penetrated by the first settles
during the last century of the Spanish regime.
-by Angelique Naila
4. It took some years when the place was gradually denuded and cleared
down to abfuluwan. Denuding or clearing was the handy work of the first
settlers from where they planted root crops, palay, beans, and other
agricultural products for their daily consumption.
One of the children of the first settlers made an invent to try an ‘Opalan’
they may have heard the term opalan but they could hardly imagine in
the absence of a visual aid. Now the trial was successful with some
improvements and the place of trail was at Pinattitan.
5. The process in grinding the pieces of sugar cane which is
cut in less a foot long or shorter as it maybe, is a footwork,
with the right foot pushing down the Tali and realeased on
a continuous process for the Opalan to open up and down
to pin the sugarcane and for the jews to come out and fall
down to a container beneath the Chamaghan or Ipitan.
Now the end of product which is the ‘Ente’ or the
malasses ‘Tali’ (rope) an essential and indespensable
instrument to be manipulated, plays an important role in
extracting and production of ente or molasses. The ‘Tali’
and ‘Ente’ was therefore coined into the name Talite.

7. The Origin of Brgy. Bantay in Paracelis Mt. Province
by Vina Ag-agiw
According to my auntie Pitan; many years ago, the
Gaddang people, who originally resided in Kalao,
embarked on a migration that led them to various
locations near Paracelis, Mt. Province. While some of
them chose to settle in Kaloa, others yearned for isolation
and chose to create a separate community. This newfound
community came to be known as "Nebantay," signifying
their unity and gathering as one.
Over time, "Nebantay" evolved into "Bantay," which
remains the name of our Barangay to this day. This is the
legendary tale of the beloved Barangay Bantay.
8. Barangay New Gumiad: Unraveling Its Past
-by Precious Joy Ducusin
The former name of New Gumiad is Old Guingin and it was under
the jurisdiction of Nueva Ecija. In the olden times, nobody was residing
in this area. The Ilongots were still residing at Keat, Quirino.
Since the Ilongots were not yet really civilized, they still had been
practicing their tradition of cutting heads or “pugot”. They cut the
heads of people who wander in their areas. They were hot tempered and
wild in doing it that they even do it to the fellow members of their
tribes.
During the Second World War, the Japanese moved up here in the
mountains. The Ilongots fought them and drove them back to the
lowlands. When the Japanese moved out, many Ilongots also departed
and scattered in other places like Abaca, Kakidugen, Boayo, and Old
Guingin.
9. They changed the name of Old Guingin into NEW GUMIAD and
made it their new home. For quite a long time, the Ilongot practiced their
tradition of cutting headsIn 1995, this place was visited by the missionaries
headed by the Americans. The missionaries were interested in helping the
people and so they made a runway for airplanes so that they can land there
at anytime. They sent one Pastor named Florentino Santos. He devoted
himself in preaching the Bible and spreading Christianity to the villagers.
They became attached to the politicians. They appointed Inggo
Ordinario as their Chieftain. They changed his name to “Tapdeg”. New
Gumiad was then still under the jurisdiction of Nueva Ecija. Due to the
active support and interest of their Chieftain, he coordinated with the
former Mayor Carlos M. Padilla for the transfer of this Barangay to
Nueva Vizcaya. With the full support of the industrious mayor, this
barangay finally became under the jurisdiction of Nueva Vizcaya.
10. The FCA surveyed the forests of New Gumiad and
started logging in the area. They stayed there for fifteen (15)
years. They moved out when their extension office was burned.
Later, the Department of Education Culture and Sports
(DECS) and the Department of Health (DOH) followed.
DECS put up schools to improve the literacy of the community
while the DOH helped the members of the community with
ailments. Other government agencies followed.
11. As early as 1725, The Brgy. Bitnong
of Dupax Del Norte was said to be
inhabited by tribes, the ‘Malaats’ and the
‘Caraos’. Malaats, led by chieftain named
Dayag, occupied an area which is now
known as Parai in Dupax del Norte and the
Caraos, led by Chieftain Tiyum Pising lived
with the Isinays in Dupax del Sur.

12. Unveiling the history of Brgy. Mabasa
-by Mary Grace Barlolong
Mabasa (Iloko for "wet") is a barangay of Dupax del Norte in the province of Nueva Vizcaya,
Philippines. It was one of the oldest barrio of Dupax (when the town was not yet divided into two, Dupax del
Norte and Dupax del Sur). Mabasa was originally called San Roque, named by the parish priest of Dupax
after the saint of hunters because the place then was a thick forest where game was abundant such as deer and
wild pigs.
The first settlers of San Roque were Ilokano migrants from the town of Paoay in Ilocos Norte and from
Alcala and San Nicolas towns in Pangasinan. They travelled by foot and by horses and carabaos through San
Nicolas, Pangasinan, passing through Imugan, Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya because that was the shortest
waypossible during those times. The migrants settled at Sitio Poonan (later called Puongan). The family of
Apolonio Vadil was the first settler in Poungan. Old records from the Roman Catholic Church in Dupax del
Sur showed that the daughter of Apolonio Vadil, Tomasa, was baptized on October 10, 1887.
More migrants came and settled along the Apean (Apayan) River from Puongan upstream and
occupied the western part of the barrio now called Riverside East and Riverside West. The settlers found the
place always flowing with abundant water coming from a spring in the eastern part of the barrio, and so they
called the place "Nabasa" which means "wet" in Iloko language. It was later officially called "Mabasa"
changing from the old name of "San Roque."
13. Brgy. Calalabangan or also known for the
people of todays as Brgy. Concepcion, a well
known dumpsite in the land of Solano in the
municipality of N.V. where all Barangay of
Solano dump their waste like Brgy. Quirino,
Brgy. Quezon, Brgy. Osmeña and many more.

14. Before the name of our barangay, San Andres, there existed an old
"Kadanglaan" in the late 1800s. According to the elders of our barangay,
"Kadanglaan" derives its name from the word 'dangla' because our barangay, at that
time, was full of dangla (a Chinese chastetree), and that's how the name Kadanglaan
came into being.
In the late 1880s to 1900s, Kernel Andres Daguio Damian, also known as
'Lolo Andres,' was one of the richest men in the area. He noticed a vacant lot, which
was the Kadangalaan, and decided to own it without any legal documentation or
involvement of other people. After 'Lolo Andres' passed away due to his illness, his
his next in line/successor chose to rename Kadangalaan to the new San Andres as a
tribute to Kernel Andres for his outstanding leadership in our village.

15. Tawangan’s history dates back to the American era in the
1940’s,where the place was originallyknown as "Nadaklan," which
means flatland or lowland, likely because it is situated at the foot
of the mountains.
One day, a local man from the community was catching
birds using a "tawang," which is a type of net used for this
purpose. A curious American soldiers approached him and
inquired about the name of the place. Unfortunately, the man
could not speak English or understand the question.
Misunderstanding the soldier's intent, he assumed the soldier was
asking about what he was doing and responded with "tawang,"
referring to the net he was using.
Unaware of the misunderstanding, the soldiers accepted
"tawang" as the name of the place, and over time, this name stuck
and eventually became "Tawangan" replacing its previous name
“Nadaklan” up to this date.

16. Barangay Malabing: The citrus haven and its journey through time
by Fierry Rocher Banay
Barangay Malabing which is most popular called "Citrus Barangay" of kasibu has long
been inhabited by indigenous people who migrated from ifugao to this soil rich barangay.
The group of hard working people from the province of ifugao are Francisco Guinid Sr.,
Crispin B. Hisalago and others who came early 1940's. Barangay malabing is the mother
barangay of the valley which consist of eleven barangay's
In 1960's, Barangay malabing stand alone as one Barangay and headed by Barangay
captain Alberto D. Culhi Sr., Seven(7) sitios were created: Purok 1-Centro, Purok 2-
Tinabla, Purok 3-Barrio Site, Purok 4-School Site, Purok 5-Landing, Purok 6-Camgat,
Purok 7-Maninnib.
17. Barangay Malabing has now a total population of eight hundred eighty one (881),
total household of one hundred eighty-seven (187) and total families of two hundred
eleven (211). Every year we are conducting New Year Celebration, Sport Fests and
Barangay Fiesta for the development of social, Spiritual, Physical Relationship in the
community.
Now a days Barangay Malabing have a continuous harmony among the community,
different organization as well as the Barangay Officials to achieve the Vision of the
Barangay into a God-fearing community.
18. A year after, the news about newly discovered land has spread and reached the Ilocos
Region, Abra, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Cagayan and Bulacan provinces. Many families
traveled the high mountains to reach the place until the place was almost settled on. Don Joaquin
who became the first captain of the place, was so happy when more people came and asked for a
share of the land. He told them “Mangdappat kayo, ngem ti maudi maawanan”. From this phrase,
the word “Udi Awan” was coined into what is now known as “UDDIAWAN”.
In the Provincial map, Uddiawan is located on the western part of the Municipality of Solano with
Barangay San Luis, Lactawan and Tucal. On the eastern part lies Barangay Aggub. On the
northern part is Barangay San Juan. On the southern part are Barangay Bangaan, and Wacal.
Barangay Uddiawan is nestled at the foot of the famous Cordillera Mountain and surrounded on
the east with hills and mountains. It consists of Sitios Mapaina, Salamague, Santo Domingo (now
Brgy. San Juan), Tanap, Santol and Communal. Lately, Communal became a separate Barangay.
Barangay Uddiawan is now divided into seven (7) puroks.

Christians settled in the area. These pioneering settlers were called by Don Joaquin
Velasquez from nearby provinces; He did not stop inviting other settlers for the place was so
abundant with rich natural resources and promising for a living. He supervised the settlers turn
the meadows into wide productive fields. He led them in constructing irrigation canals from the
