Ulysses Court Outfall Restoration
The Ulysses Court Outfall Restoration Project restored 367 linear feet of an eroded outfall channel in Fairfax County, Virginia to address public safety concerns and improve water quality. The restoration project stabilized the channel using a rock step pool system and reinforced riffles to connect it to the floodplain. Native plants were also installed to promote reforestation and reduce phosphorous, nitrogen, and sediment levels in the Pohick Creek Watershed by 29 pounds, 58 pounds, and 9,712 pounds respectively each year.

This study examined the effects of ocean acidification and decreasing salinity on bull kelp stress. Replicate tanks contained bull kelp blades under high or low CO2 conditions at different salinities. Stress was measured daily using chlorophyll fluorescence. Results showed that under high CO2, kelp exhibited greater stress as salinity decreased, indicating ocean acidification may inhibit kelp's ability to survive seasonal freshwater events.

The Shetland Court Outfall Restoration project was substantially completed on September 7, 2018. Algae blooms are limited to some yellow-green blooms growing in bays near the Kitsap Peninsula and blooms near estuaries of the Skagit, Stillaguamish, and Puyallup Rivers. In July, conditions were normalizing, yet river flows remained lower, continuing into August. July also saw lower oxygen appearing in southern Puget Sound. By August, jellyfish are occurring in high numbers in Eld and Budd Inlet. South Puget Sound has Noctiluca drifting at the surface in large orange lines in many places and red-brown blooms widespread in finger inlets, as well as in Sinclair Inlet. The electrical resistivity technique which
involved the Schlumberger depth sounding method and
geochemical analyses of water samples collected from
boreholes was used to investigate the suitability of
groundwater aquifers in Abi for drinking and irrigation
purposes. Fifty randomly located electrical resistivity data
were collected, modeled, and interpreted after calibration
with lithologic logs. Ten borehole water samples were
collected and analysed to determine anion, cation concentrations
and some physical and chemical parameters, such
as water colour, temperature, total dissolved solids, and
electrical conductivity. The results show that the lithostratigraphy
of the study area is composed of sands, sandstones
(fractured, consolidated and loosed), siltstones,
shales (compacted and fractured) of the Asu River Group,
Eze-Aku Formation which comprises the aquifer units, and

The Indian monsoon has a strong impact on the climate of the southern Arabian Sea (SEAS). To analyze paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes during the last 13.5 kyr BP, we created proxy records of benthic foraminiferal diversity in sediments from core SK215/GC05 in the continental shelf off Cochin, off the (SEAS). We found 21 species in 10 sediment subsamples from this investigation. Among them are four species: a) Uvigeriperigrina, Sp., b). Cibicidesrobertsiniaus, Sp., c). Sp. Anomalinella rostrate, and d). Palaeoclimatic indicators, such as Ammomassilinaalveoloformis Sp., are employed. The findings indicate a positive relationship between the four dominant species in the SEAS. We determined that the late glacial to early Holocene periods (13.5 to 9 kyr BP) were less productive, and the Holocene climatic optimum (9 to 5 kyr BP) had the highest production, following which productivity stabilized (5 to 1 kyr BP). Our findings are consistent with the global climatic trend in the northern hemisphere.

- Core 19 is a 3.61m sediment core collected from a 212m deep basin in Lago Sarmiento, Chile. Various measurements were taken from the core including magnetic susceptibility, weight % carbonate, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios.
- Five zones were identified in the core based on trends in the chemical signals over time. Zone 1 showed fluctuations that could indicate a shift in climate. Zone 2 showed increased precipitation and decreased productivity. Zone 3 was the opposite with decreased precipitation and increased productivity.

Water samples were collected from 7 sites weekly from February to March and tested for E. coli levels. The results showed that E. coli numbers increased within the pond and downstream sites compared to upstream sites, indicating that the pond is not effectively retaining bacteria. Regular maintenance may be needed to improve the pond's ability to enhance water quality.

We studied the effects of ocean acidification on the early life stages of the krill species Euphausia pacifica. We found that higher CO2 levels of 1200 μatm (pH 7.6), predicted for 2100, had strong negative effects on krill development rates and survival compared to current levels of 400 μatm (pH 8.0). Specifically, mortality was significantly higher and development to later stages was significantly slower under higher CO2 conditions by days 7 and 16. This suggests krill populations may already experience negative impacts from occasionally acidified waters and could face increased susceptibility to mortality with ocean acidification.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

Evolving Lifecycles with High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3-D...
The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
